What is the best part of working at the company?
They will allow you to charge items to your account and deduct from your pay, which is good I suppose.

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
Operational processes either non existent or incorrect. If you're a professional or accredited in your field and see a job posting for your title, just understand they don't know what the title means, and you will be struggling to understand why operations function they way they do. Also, the pay is far too low for each position in the company.

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
The environment and culture is that of a highschool job. You will be condescended to, you will be disrespected, and you will be unmanaged. You'll receive maybe 4 hours hands on training then be expected to manage a cobbled together operational procedure that makes no logical, business, or practical sense. There's better companies to work for locally, if this is your only option then that's the only time you should consider working here

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
Confusing, not very stressful but again be prepared to be spoken down to by people most likely less qualified than you are. Ego and strict child like rules are foremost for upper management. Just avoid this if you have other options.

I started working for Foodsmiths back in 2021, as I was covering a mat leave. it was a fun environment except for one person who has since left the company. The person came back from mat leave and I had lost my position. It was too bad for me as I enjoyed both the people and the job. But I was grateful for my experience. 

In March of 2024, the position came up and I was asked to return to my position and I welcomed it with open arms and excitement. This position was meant for me and I am grateful for the opportunity to work for a business such as Foodsmiths. I am doing the same job and love this place as a career. I've worked many jobs where they felt like jobs, but coming back to this position it felt like I was in the right place and I am grateful to be back. 

I would not recommend working here.   I relocated to this area and jumped at the chance to work here after being a customer for a few months.   The department manager that I had was very supportive although this person was very much leashed by the store manager.  There is a negative undercurrent in this business and it begins with the owners and store manager.  They portray caring and commitment to the community but really fall short of that with the way that they treat their staff.  As someone who has kids who will soon be looking for part time work, I will not let them apply here.  The culture of this business is toxic.

I began working at Foodsmiths 4 years ago. I went from a clothing retail enviroment into a business that were more than willing to work with you in creating a smooth transition. I was given reviews twice a year with a wage increase. Most of their customers are very loyal to them. Some of them shopping from the store since the 70's!! It is a great family feeling throughout with staff. Met alot of incredible people, friends, and learnt something new everyday. I am sad to leave, but know that my experience there will follow me everyday.

Worst job I had. Managers/employers have very little to no care about employees. You are talked to very poorly and unprofessionally. A lot of drama between staff. The pay is below average with very little improvement over time. Very high expectations especially for young staff who are just starting working. Stressful environment, zero culture, so unless you are white don’t expect to be hired.  

They really don't have a clue here. Left hand doesn't know what the right hand is doing. Management can't make up their mind about anything. Wages never improve. Unreasonable processes that hamper any type of productivity.
Unreceptive to any feedback and quick to blame the lowest level staff for the shortcomings of management.

Foodsmiths was once a progressive inclusive environment. NO LONGER. The new store manager with the support of the owners has created a culture of intimidation.  This was brought to the attention of the owner a number of times with no support at all. High stress and no support. Would not recommend working at Foodsmiths

Most of the junior staff are great to work with.  Management has a poor attitude towards junior staff members.  The store manager has a corporate "my way or the highway" attitude.  There has been a huge change in the culture of the business since the change in ownership.  The company is often called Rudesmiths.

the store itself runs great and is managed well over all. small town slow environment, enjoyable experience over all as a job. the owners are aware of the availability of short term staff members

Fast paced workplace. Friendly staff.  Hardest part of the job was keeping up on stocking.  Rotating stock was difficult because there are is such a variety of products. Helping customers was the best part of the job.
