Foothills School Division

I didn't work for the Foothills School District for more than 3 months after Graduating from the University of Calgary. I was brought in to:
1) Work with the Special Education Teacher,  Grades 7 to 9.
2) Learn her skill set and methodology 
3) Take over for her for the last month while she took time off for health reasons. 
4) A Substitute Teacher was always sitting in the room with me due to the fact that I still hadn't received my Teaching Certificate from the Alberta Teachers College.  
5) All Substitute Teachers were too  afraid to teach these students themselves as they were such a mixture and some were weak academically while others could be very dangerous. 
6) These Substitute Teachers sat in the corner and didn't get involved while I was teaching. 
7) Each child had their own Individualized Educational Plan (1974)
At the end of June,  I was given a special Luncheon at the Turner Valley Golf Club ⛳ by the lead citizens for my work. 

What is the best part of working at the company?
There are no safety protocols in place to make sure staff are save and the money compensation is lower than Calgary. 

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
The employer doesn’t worry about your safety, or values you a skill employee. 

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
Each school is different depending on their administration. FSD doesn’t have a hiring system in place to make sure good administrators oversee the school staff. 

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
Busy, sometimes you can not use the bathroom or forget to eat. Is easy to forget about your needs and FSD doesn’t care of how hard you work. The is no pay development for staff, or extra hours not even for staff meetings. It’s hard to build a connection with other staff unless is at your own time, because you are there to work and nothing else.

Teaching does require long hours and a specific personality. I was/am a great teacher but the expectations and treatment of employees at Foothills is less than stellar. Classes would begin at 8:30 at the school I taught at and end at 3:15 but you then had work to do in the evening which would vary from 1 hour to 4 hours most nights. Much of this was marking and providing feedback which students do not see as valuable in this day and age.

 Some co-workers at my school were great and easy to depend on. Others tried to create a similar setting to that created by the students, favoring others based on friendships not on ability. This did not foster a healthy working atmosphere for both teachers and students alike.

My employment experience with the Foothills School Division provided me with guidance regarding student academic pursuits, and how best to utilize learning tools in the process. The education environment was always very professionally conducted towards staff, students, and their families, as well as, any associate educational facilities. The Foothills School Division is a community treasure!

This is an awesome school board. I have stayed with them for all these years because of their dedication to both students and staff.
My day would begin with friendly greetings from the guest teacher co-ordinator, all information necessary for my day, and the offer to help however needed.
The other staff members are friendly and always ready to lend a hand.
The most difficult aspect of my job as a guest teacher was having to leave for the day not knowing when I would be back.
The students, the way they process information is creative and unique.

It's an old boys club with the odd mix of old ladies with nothing to do but gossip. Everybody spends their time trying to cut down each other. No one supports anyone and the leadership enable this disgusting behaviour. Don't trust anyone. If you have the courage to speak up -- you'll be fired. All they do is weed out good people so they don't have to change. I stopped building relationships with anyone new. I can't believe a culture this disgusting can be allowed to operate. Run!

Don't bother working here if you're "back office support" type staff. Health, life, and Pension benefits are good, but normal compensation is absolute rock bottom if comparing to other positions across industries. It's only normalized when confining the comparison to other education divisions. Relatively par for the course as far as publicly funded services go.

The District spans a large area surrounding Calgary. Each school Jas it's own challenges and diverse socio economic issues specific to it's culture. ask to visit the the school you are applying to work at and observe students and staff and ask questions about what it's like to work or school there.

As I said before, the same still applies.  I loved working with the children and under the guidance of my classroom teacher I learned many management skills, problems solving skills, and communication skills.  I had a diverse team that I was working with and we got along wonderfully.  I loved every aspect of my  job.

Awful place to work unless you’re over 60. All ladies are old and don’t like anyone whose not their age. If your child is sick and you need to leave early you’ll get in trouble but if you’re old and need to leave early for your tee time. No problem. Managers are overpaid nitwits that do nothing but talk. Avoid this place.
