I worked for that company for a few years as a butcher. If you are interested in learning whole animal butchery - great, do that and get out. 

There is a very toxic culture within the company, the moral of people making dishes and cutting meat are not a concern for upper management. In fact they would rather blame hourly employees for lack of moral than their consistent dropping of standards , lack of respect for their underpaid employees and their sketchy covid practices. 

I started off wanting to grow with this company but after so much disorganization and secrecy that not only put my mental health in decline but several others who I worked along side; it was not worth it. If you're a hard worker, there are better places to grow your career.

Employees who have the capacity to do more than just repetitive tasks get stuck in the same position for years - no promotion, no raise. A small raise is guaranteed only when the minimum wage increases. Packing line prioritizes speed, not quality/presentation/accuracy so forget what customer service means. If you’re done packing at 12, good luck with getting your hours in another department. Very low morale - you get criticized right in front of your coworkers over a simple mistake. The only thing that’s remarkable is most people are easy to get along with, and the management is pretty lenient. 

Some days are fast,  most days are slow. This can be a pro/con. I was a forklift worker here and did many odd work.

Cons, co-workers are not serious on a busy day. They talk too much (less talk and more communication). Hygiene is bad on some, and the weekly fridge clean is always on my hands. I dont get paid extra to train new employees. HR (where i worked, i overheard things i wish i hadn't).

Pros, Free food. Discount on groceries. Parking, transit accessible, friendly employees (exclude HRs) close restaurants for lunch breaks. Bi-Weekly pay (on time) 

A great place to work for new employees, you get support throughout your training.

Employed for over a year or more, you'll be stressed from all the work they put on you because they either talk too much or lazy. 

The coworkers make it worth the early start, but everything that was once great about Mama Earth's culture has been gutted by Fresh City Management and their own poor company culture and policies. 

It's a shame because the stated mission of the company is noble in theory, but the execution is missing; example Kindness is listed as a value but the workers are not treated as such, they switched benefits and providers and a coworker who was diagnosed with cancer was denied drug coverage! 

They pay $16/hr. Previously staff was allowed to take home the less than perfect produce but now this is sent to customers at full price. 

Too much more to say, again the coworkers are the only positive.

Toxic work environment where all the managers promote their friends (instead of promoting people who can actually do the job properly).
High staff turnover - no one stays longer than a few months.
Long hours, 50-70 hours a week.  No raises - ever.  None.
Benefits are minimal at best.
Bosses make dumb mistakes over and over again then blame YOU for their mistakes. Bosses make way more money than you ever will.
High stress.  Poor organization.  Mean/cruel towards low level employees.
Feeling sick?  Too bad!  Come in to work the packing line!


There has been a lot of change since Fresh City bought out Mama Earth. Lots of hiccups along the way but coming out better in the end. I get to work with some pretty awesome coworkers and managers and learned lots about the company since I started. The best things about working here are probably getting to take home free organic produce at the end of each shift. Really cuts down my grocery bill each week. 

A super intense always on the clock environment. Everyone has your mobile number and asks you to do things even after your work day is over.  It used to be an amazing collaborative environment but they don't seem keen on training managers to be good managers of people, and the turnover of non-managers is constant. Everyone burns out eventually, and no amount of free lunch can help. It used to be an excellent place to work, but now upper management seems okay with the unfortunate environment they have created. 

It seemed to be a really great place to work at first and a great team. We were trying to implement new systems but every time something seemed to start working, it got changed again because upper management wasn’t happy with it. Was expected to pick up some of the slack from other teams and hunt down information. Was sent emails and communications at almost all hours of the day. 

- Wages do not reflect workload. Receivers and general labourers are treated and paid the same despite very different responsibilities, workload, and training.
- Incompetent management, poor and indifferent communication with workers.
- Unsafe conditions, very few safety considerations leading to many workers being injured.
- Upper management does not care about workers, only profits.
- Friendly atmosphere among workers
- Union benefits

Most people who work here really believe in the mission but since Fresh City took over Mama Earth all that was good about the place was sucked out of it and the company has gone downhill which is really sad to see. Great co-workers and managers but terrible decisions from the top and a general lack of care and concern for employees. They would rather get rid of good people than have to fix the toxic culture.
