Frontier College

There are busy times in this position and slow times.  At the beginning and the end of the school semester, paperwork, emails and presentations are a plenty.  In the middle of the semester there is a slow point where as a student, you are able to focus on your studies.  I have learned a lot of administrative tasks, I have learned the way University of Guelph runs a lot of their events and who to talk to for certain services.  Co-workers are very pleasant when everyone has the same type of respect for the services Frontier College provides. When everyone respects the services, coworkers work very hard on their administrative duties (even when they are all volunteers).  Management is very appreciative of all the work you do and they never forget to show you their appreciation.  The most enjoyable part of the job is learning how a non profit organization works and the hardest part of the job is the long stressful hours during the busy time.  When it is busy, things become very last minute and you need to be able to work in a fast paced environment.  Your priority skills become well adapted in this position.

Working for this company has been rewarding. I not only teach our children, I learn from them as well. This program offers positive interactions and this deters our youth from boredom and that could be detrimental to them, as this can cause all sorts of negative behaviors. The College offers so much activities. (Crafts,painting,bannock making, Elder teachings, Fire training with our local Firemen) The creativity our children possess is amazing!

Frontier College is a wonderful organization  to work for because they are inclusive, easy going and do their best to make sure you succeed with them. They provided excellent guidance on how to be a camp counsellor and was able to continue that support while we were in the far north. They didn't hold our hands though which I really enjoyed because it forced us to improve our management skills and figure out how to work as a team on our own just like you would have to do in the real world.

This is a great opportunity to interact with Thunder Bays youth. Teaches you how to plan educational activities and if you are going to become a teacher it is also a great learning tool. The hardest part of the job is learning how to apply what the students enjoy into to activities. Every child is different and therefore a different learning approach needs to be considered for those who are more active and outgoing.

Everyone there is friendly and understanding. They value making the students' experiences positively enjoyable. A head volunteer or managing coordinator would check whether everyone could make it to a session and if not let them know ahead of time. Volunteers were given the hours as long as they attended 7 out of 10 sessions.

I enjoy my time at FC. Great working environment and the staff are like family. Very sweet and make me want to come to work everyday. The salary isn't very competitive, but the work environment makes up greatly for the lack of compensation.

I assisted middle school children with their academic work and also helped them practice further by assigning them worksheets to complete and encouraging them to read. There were also fun after school activities to encourage them to approach schoolwork in a more lively and fun manner.

Frontier College provides generous amounts of support in regards to after school homework programs. They provided basic training for becoming a tutor before you are placed in a school setting. They are always looking for additional volunteers and welcome feedback on each individual's experience.

The organization was good, but I couldn't continue due to needing to move. There was very little actual tutoring involved, since most of the kids were too exhausted after the school day to work hard, but they benefited in other ways and were able to use the tutors as a resource if needed.

This was my favourite job, also training was very fun and teaching the children at the summer camp was a blast! Teaching children in the summer is important as well, and having some fun!
