Fuzz Wax Bar

have worked for this company for a very long time and at one point I really loved this job. The concept is amazing and it could be such a great place to work for because I’ve experienced it. However it has gone WAY downhill in the last year there was even a period of time that we didn’t have a manager for a few months and that was better than having one. The only positive reviews on here are from people from HQ who get treated well and are often given gifts and classes and activities by the company. 

Heres a breakdown of my opinion currently:
Pros:
-Co-workers are amazing and supportive
-Benefits have great coverage
-Tips are profitable, once you build a regular clientele and are busy and working at a busy location you average $80 a day
-Fast pace environment 

Cons:
-You are worked VERY hard, treated like robots that aren’t allowed to have a bad day and if you do show negative emotions (whether it be about the job or not) you are called out and made to feel worse saying that your mood is effecting the whole team environment 
-Calling in sick is more of a hassle than coming into work even if you’re vomiting between clients or on your death bed
-Very hostile environment with management, they talk badly and gossip about other managers and locations and even staff that is at their own location in front of other staff
-Headquarters does not respect the fact that the aestheticians are the professionals (who are all required to go to school to get the job) and we do the waxing all day everyday and when we have pointers for daily procedures they are ignored and treated like we know nothing and didn’t pay thousands of dollars to go to school to learn this 
-Excuses are made for employees that may not be doing their job just because they have the desired “fuzz attitude” (which is very fake happy and always peppy NEVER not)
-No opportunity to grow withinin the company-especially if you are an aesthetician, except for raises-which don’t reflect your quality of work. 
-very poor training, new waxers are thrown into situations they aren’t prepared for. Only trained on waxing the ‘fuzz way’ which might not be perfect for every person as all people have different hair and different growth styles, and trainees are not trained on everything else that comes with the job like cleaning and stocking duties therefore they lack in those skills making everyone else pick up their slack
-training program is terrible, the “fuzz way” they teach new employees is one of the most painful waxes I’ve ever watched even when it is done by the head trainer, and very hard for new people to perform properly because they ask you to apply such large hard wax strips and learning to control that much wax takes time
 -your loyalty to the company means nothing to them they will not fight for you or your happiness 
-your mental health is defiantly in jeopardy here
-there is fear of losing you job for speaking your mind 
-decisions made by HQ don’t involve the wax bars at all they just make the decision and implement it even if it won’t work out or if the employees aren’t happy about it 
-they are one of those companies that says ‘we have a high employee turnover because thats just the industry’

I've been working here as a frontline, and if I were to rate it, I'd barely give it a 1 out of 10. The only time I felt somewhat valued was during the training. The 'fuzzologists,' are fantastic, but the managers? Not so much. They need to be replaced.
Working here is a rollercoaster of stress. These managers can really get on your nerves. It feels like they don't give a darn about us employees. And here's the kicker: they're two-faced. They'll be all smiles to your face but talk behind your back. It's pretty disappointing, and honestly, they remind me of those 'Karens' you hear about outside of work.
I genuinely believe the owners should step in and hire a better management team. Communication here is practically non-existent. They don't give you any feedback on your performance.
For anyone thinking of working here, you've got to be a perfectionist, seriously. One mistake, and it feels like you've committed a crime. They won't tell you directly, but they'll definitely gossip behind your back. It's like being back in high school dealing with mean girls. It would be nice if they offered some constructive feedback, right? But nope, they'd rather have their little chats.
And if you're already working here and dealing with these manager issues, consider yourself lucky if you haven't been shown the door yet. But trust me, it's probably coming. I wouldn't be surprised if they're taking notes about your performance on the sly. So, it might be a good idea to have a chat with them or think about moving on.
Honestly, if you're considering working here, don't let these 'managers' push you around. You'll be surrounded by people who act like mean girls, except for the 'fuzzologists.' And if things get tough, don't hesitate to report them to the upper managements or General Managers!!
By the way, some of these managers might even exhibit racist behavior, not in your face, but you can feel it in their actions. If they're not fond of you, which happens quite often with new hires, they'll pile on the work. It's a bit funny that the front desk folks get paid just minimum wage but have to deal with so much nonsense.
Long story short, these managers are seriously unprofessional. Owners and upper management  need to step in and sort things out. And for anyone considering working here, please, please look elsewhere. There are plenty of other places with great management teams and better pay. Don't waste your time here you'll probably regret it.

If you're thinking about joining the Fuzz Wax Bar team, I want to share my personal experience from the front desk. It's with a heavy heart that I say this, but you might want to reconsider. The management system there leaves much to be desired.

When it comes to how they treat their employees, it's safe to say that they don't prioritize our well-being, not even our mental health. The pressure they put on us to sell memberships can be overwhelming, leading to a lot of stress and burnout.

The way management handles things is a real issue. They're quick to criticize, even over small things like forgetting to change the trash bags. Professionalism seems to be in short supply, and their behaviour towards employees is often just plain rude and unacceptable.

Constructive feedback? Forget about it. It's as if they never got the memo on how to nurture growth and improvement.

It's genuinely baffling how unprepared they are to lead and support their team. Managers and assistant managers should be leaders, right? Instead, they tend to undermine our confidence and make us feel like we don't belong.

What puzzles me even more is why they keep hiring people without relevant front desk experience when it's clear that they need extensive training. And when we try to discuss membership policies, they're not very open to it.

But perhaps the worst part is their habit of canceling shifts at the last minute or asking us to take on new shifts with hardly any notice. It's not just unprofessional; it's downright inconsiderate. Late-night messages are crossing a line that shouldn't even be there.

I genuinely hope the upper management takes a good, hard look at what's going on. Addressing these issues is crucial for creating a better work environment and improving how employees feel about their time at Fuzz Wax Bar.


If you are thinking about working as a frontline receptionist at Fuzz Wax Bar, I'd advise you to give it a second thought. Speaking from my own experience as a former receptionist there, I have some concerns about the management team, including the manager and assistant manager. It feels like they could use some extra training or perhaps the higher-ups should consider bringing in new management for the store.
One thing that bothered me is that the managers seemed to have their favourites, and their expectations were often too high. They didn't really provide helpful feedback; instead, they'd talk amongst themselves and, before you knew it, you might find yourself out of a job. That just doesn't strike me as very professional.
In other retail jobs I've had, they were great about giving constructive criticism to help you improve. But here, it's a different story. They're so focused on selling memberships that they forget not every customer is interested. You might find yourself stressed about not meeting membership sales targets, even if you're doing your best.
What's more, they don't really communicate the perks and benefits effectively. Sending an email isn't the same as having a real discussion. And if you try to ask questions or get more details, they might not take it well and give you attitude. It's a real lack of professionalism and manners.
So, for anyone thinking about working here, don't be surprised if your time with them is short-lived, maybe just a few weeks or a month. They might hire you even if you're not super experienced for the role, only to let you go later on. In all my years of work, I've never dealt with managers who lacked professionalism like this.
I really hope the higher-ups take a closer look at this situation. It would be great to see new management or some serious retraining. Thanks for listening."

I worked at fuzz on Bloor for about 6 months, it was great I loved the manager there at the time and my co workers are still my best friend to this day, we're really close. I did a good job and was passionate about it. THEN they changed managers, I was there for the first two months of that new manager being there, the first month of her working there she took 3 or 4 weeks off to go on VACATION, then she came back and made us all uncomfortable, she would always send us emails lecturing us, or would have a personal "meeting" almost every week with some of us separately and would talk about "what she heard the other day and how this person told her this and that" and mind you that she wasn't at work for all that time she took off and was telling us what she "heard" it made most of us uncomfortable in our work place, a few times in a few personal meetings she had with me she would threaten my job. She would ask us to clean the wires while they were plugged to the wall because "the wax ALWAYS needs to be plugged in". Not to mention she didn't know half of what she was doing, I mean she was asking us how to do her job. Also there's no time in between clients, if you finished your client around 5:59 and your next client was at 6:00 well too bad you don't have time to clean your room, you rush and do the best you can and that's about it. like I said, my team was awesome and love them all we are all extremely close, but the managers at fuzz are just horrible, they don't know how to wax and they tell you what you're doing wrong in waxing, they have no background at all in the waxing industry and they lecture you for anything and everything. But if you can deal with something like that on the daily basis, go for it.

The owners have an amazing concept of women (& people) empowerment but it doesn’t translate to the actual locations unfortunately. They are very out of touch by only knowing what HQ has told them. They really seem to shifting to only doing franchising so they don’t seem to care about corporate stores anymore.  

It’s mostly women run and yet no one is getting paid fairly, including aestheticians who are the MOST valuable people in the operation (obviously) - they get .95$ more then a front desk part time employee starting at minimum wage…. Raises are based off of yearly reviews but you almost never get more than a 3.5% raise which is nothing on $17.55

HQ is so disconnected from the actual stores and doesn’t seem to really care about how things are running but rather only if they are making as much money as possible. 

Retail & memberships sales are HEAVILY PUSHED on staff but also told to use only proper FUZZ approved sales techniques and FUZZ scripted conversations to sell and if that doesn’t work and you try different ways they tell you that’s wrong but then ask why you don’t meet the sales goals and there’s a BIG issue if you aren’t hitting goals… there’s no winning. 

Overall the staff at all locations and the other managers are so great and fun and the vibe of the company seems like it could be amazing but the high turnover rate of staff, particularly managers and general managers and the amount of staff neglect from HQ and disregard of concerns at the locations is a HUGE reason I would not suggest anymore working for the company. 

This company used to be an amazing company to work for. Sure every job has good days and bad days, but currently, the bad days far outweigh the good. I feel like this company is spreading itself thin trying to open more locations to show its success but not doing anything to help the locations they currently have. We are constantly working with things that are broken and when you tell your manager something is broken, they will just super glue things back together and pretend like everything is ok instead of just spending a little bit of extra money to actually fix things. Sure, you make good tips and the clients are amazing but it gets to the point where its like: would you rather make a little bit more money and hate going into work or make less but love the environment you're in? 

There is no room to grow. No room to change. There are "Fuzz protocols" that get made up as you go and things that used to be ok suddenly are not. It's impossible to get time off. They constantly talk about work/life balance being a focus but don't actually implement that. There's a reason all of these reviews are negative. This is not a good company to work for. The only good reviews here are from people that work at HQ because they actually do have a good life. They get treated well, taken out by the owners, given gifts. However, the forefront of the company, the ones who are in there every day giving Fuzz a name, are treated like disposable robots.

I have worked there long enough to know that they can definitely afford to give their employees a higher pay but refuse to do so. They have loyal employees that have been working there for so long and have only received a 50 cent raise. They are opening locations left right and centre and can't even give their employees a decent pay. 
The ladies at head office go to fitness classes, receive cute gifts and a whole lot of nice things when the girls who are actually connecting with the clients in person get a lousy pizza lunch. The girls at the front aren't even allowed to sit down because it looks "unprofessional" and the managers wonder why they look grumpy at times. Those anti-fatigue mats that they placed to supposedly help don't do anything either.

It's difficult to book days off and even to call in sick. You could have a fever and they would still want you to come in because "there's no one that could cover your shift" (this actually happened to me).

They over hire people and then end up cutting everybody's hours. It's really frustrating when you were promised fixed hours per week and you plan your whole life around that then they just cut your shifts like it's nothing.

It used to be so much better a few years ago but money really gets the best of us sometimes.

This workplace is absolutely not somewhere I would recommend. Your first few months may be fine, but you’ll notice 0 support or proper training from the management from the beginning. When they get comfortable with you, you’ll hear incredibly ignorant and rude things from them all the time. You may make friends with some fuzzologists but it will usually be constant drama, mainly with management. I have never in my life worked at a place with such high school mean girl behaviour. The managers especially will give you no constructive criticism, instead they will act as though you’re doing great and then gossip about you behind your back, and then eventually fire you. They have 0 backbone and are super childish. ( and two faced even though they’re pushing 30). Reading the other reviews I’m seeing that this is a very common theme so clearly it’s a company wide issue. There are so many other issues as well, and you are very underpaid so there’s no point to work here and put up with their mess. It’s like dealing with children. Also one mistake and instead of helping you correct it they will immediately talk about you and dislike you from then on. You can be extremely positive, ask if they need help with things constantly as well as doing your job, and they’ll still find things to complain about because they’re miserable. Don’t work here!! 

Great tips and work environment with super lovely, kind and supportive coworkers as well as good training. However, this job is very demanding and staff are over worked. The staff at the front desk are not allowed to take breaks and the manager purposely makes appointment schedules for fuzzologists without breaks and says it’s the responsibility of someone else to change the schedule and fit in a break somehow the day of. They change the monthly schedule with no notice not even a week in advance. They contact you on your days off and tell you you're coming in today, they don't ask. Forget about ever calling in sick because even if you have a fever and are puking your guts out they say that you have to come in because it’s “protocol” if you can’t get anyone to cover your shift. Nobody wants to be waxed by a sick person. This endangers the health of the clients and staff. They also favouritise certain people over others and give them days off like it’s no problem. They push fuzzologists to not only talk to the clients about the retail products available, but to also go up to the front while they are paying and pressure them into buying the products. The client will buy it if they are interested, it is annoying for them and uncomfortable for us.
