GEORGIAN COLLEGE

I had high hopes for Georgian College, having been in this industry for a long time. However, this is a terribly run college. Hiring managers make very inappropriate and discouraging comments to people who have interviewed with them, and no one really cares if you can advance at all. Because of the way the collective agreements are structured, you are unable to apply for many FT jobs unless you are already in a FT job. And it is impossible to get into a FT perm role. Training is inadequate at best, with little process documentation provided-this appears to be across multiple departments. HR avoids talking to you, there isn't anyone to discuss a career ladder with because managers don't care, and the people, with some exceptions, are generally very standoffish. management also has massive double standards. Also-if you apply for another role, you have to give your current manager as a reference, (even though your current manager may be the reason you want to leave). 

What is the best part of working at the company?
My students and collegues made the experience worthwhile. It was also great to be able to learn a variety of new skills, and deal with new challenges everyday.

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
The administration, the work insecurity, the lack of training and proper pay for work done outside of the classroom are demoralizing. The teachers, particularly if you are non-full time are treated as a every renewable commodity that can be replaced easily. There is no, or little opportunity for advancement and growth. High levels of stress because of these conditions, increasing numbers of students, and lack of real support from any level. 

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
Toxic and insecure. Lack of positive feedback or support. Very little interaction with peers or managers as much of the work is done remotely. It is worse  now because of the current political climate around secondary education.

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
There is no typical day.  The variety of skills called upon is immense, and includes teaching, counseling, administration, and pratical prep.

Entire organization is just waiting out their retirement. Management in all areas are either incompetent nepotism placements or hired for their degree in a completely unrelated field. The morale is high for employees who watch movies at their desks all day but otherwise completely negative towards management and executives decisions and business acumen. Politically driven environment that lacks any drive to help the student or the college, only personal and department goals. Each department acts a tribe and vehemently fight for their departments lack of responsibility or position against the other tribes.
Inter-department attacks at the management and executive level happen on a daily basis. The entire business model for the college is based on an antiquated bureaucracy of union buck passing.

Working as a tutor at Georgian College provides a unique work experience that exposes employees to a wide array of individuals of different backgrounds and languages, allowing employees to interact with and learn about other cultures. The College also offers opportunities for continued training to improve useful skills. Employees enjoy a high degree of autonomy and the ability to choose when and how often to work, depending upon availability. The workplace is generally friendly and informal. For me, the most enjoyable part of the job was the opportunity to be exposed to new cultures and languages while also putting my writing skills to use. I also enjoyed the flexibility of the workplace in that supervisors were willing to work around a busy school schedule. The only real drawback to the job was the general absence of available work.

The position was voluntary, and that was the most rewarding part.
I felt like I was giving back to the college for all the events and fundraisers I volunteered for.

A typical day was weekly meetings of what was going on in the student council and we had to report these to our programs.
Submit monthly reports of what events we had volunteered for and how many hours we submitted for our final honourarium.

What I learned is how much the Student council does to keep colleges/universities running for the student body.

Co-workers were all great, hard working students that wanted to give back to their college.

The most enjoyable part was helping with events.

While it used to be an engaging and fun place to work, Georgian had become toxic and sad. The senior leadership have mismanaged the college for years resulting in the complete collapse of the organization. There isn’t a single employee happy to work here. They accept every single student who applies, and water down curriculum to make sure even the lowest performers graduate. No integrity in the diploma from Georgian. All this while saying that it provides an “unrivalled employee and student experience.” What? Tone deaf and out of touch, I don’t know why anyone would ever work here under the current leadership. Every day is a fresh horror. 

No job security. Peers are competitive and cliquey. Great pay. No guarantees to be teaching the next semester. Department leads are comfortable with it’s always been this way mentality even despite possible alternative ways or best practices. Curriculum is sub standard and curriculum writers are defensive when innovation is suggested. Licensing exam stats speak to the quality of education that is provided by this department in this institution.

I was responsible for a group of students in a designated classroom for an area of study during which individuals could ask questions regarding their curriculum.  I found that the students were motivated and the tasks were well within the reach of the learner.  
My co-workers were helpful and supportive in helping me acquire the skills necessary for tracking student success and goals attained.  
The most enjoyable part of the job was working with students who enjoyed the curriculum and worked through the challenges.

I was providing support during transitional period in the accounting department.  Learning as you go. Enjoyed working with the teaching and support staff.  Most employees had a positive attitude towards work trying to make it enjoyable and productive, follow procedures and regulations and those people make going to work a pleasant experience.  This position gave me an opportunity to learn the Banner , and PeopleSoft system  used by Higher education institution.  As well as I have learned about the working environment of Georgian College.

Everything! being taught how to be professional and cater to womens needs is exactly why I enrolled myself into this program. I like to uplift and teach other women how to maintain their own natural well-being. Working with a team of fantastic, energetic and enthusiatic women was a delightful experience teaching me genuine team work and communication. It was a true pleasure learning from such great women in the field, they made my entire time at Georgian fun and instilled more passion then I knew I ever had!
