GILLIES LUMBER

typical day was hard working, fast paced, learned how to build trusses and work with measurements alignment and carpentry, also learned how to work table saws. The majority of my co-workers were very easy to get along with and were very helpful but the hardest part of the job was knowing that it was a very unsafe work environment for not just me but the people I worked alongside. There was always constant hiring and firing and was a lot of unsafe machine operating that no one was trained for. The most enjoyable part of my job had to be pay day and knowing that I was building trusses that supported other homes and schools. The best part of my job was knowing that I learned how to work there my own safe way and it taught me what to not look for in another job.

I was there a year and a half doing the same tedious job every day despite asking to be moved so i could at least try (and learn) something new.  I cant say I learned anything new for that reason.

management was poor at best with a condescending attitude most of the time. i was laid off being told theres a work shortage while there was a help wanted sign on the front lawn. 

The job was not terribly hard but very very boring. the best part of the job was my co workers, fun guys who knew how to laugh.

and the kicker. the bathroom in my building was a plywood box with concrete flooring and mushrooms growing constantly in the corner.

A typical day was getting loaded up with the clients order, or orders, and I would find the location and deliver the load of Lumber to the designated yard. Sometimes assisting in unloading using the moffit that was on the back of the flat bed.

Management was a good bunch of guys that were easy going and decent to work under. The co-workers I had to work with, there were none as I was in the truck making deliveries for Gillies on a daily basis.

Gillies was a good company to work for, I have spent many years driving, and thought it was time to get off the road and learn more of the internal warehouse positions.

dont work here unless ur a university student because if ur not they will make fun of you, I did my job perfectly according to staff but when it came to the workers they would talk trash about you, not a fun place to work but very layed back, chances are if your going too work here you probably have to, witch was not the case for me and thats exactly why I just walked right out. they can suck it, everyone just gets high on there break and half the old guys who work there smell of alcohol right in the morning

So im gonna start with i worked there for almost 3 years making only 16$ an hour witch was the worse wage i could ever make in this economy plus it felt like my pay checks were a little light a few times but management and the pay role lady are never wrong abd you have no clue wjat your talking about, safty there is a joke, and if they dont like you for any reason they lay you off, they about raises  and lie about pretty much everything

Good place to work if you're looking to expand your skills in construction. You can be taught anything you're willing to learn. Simple learning curve and overall little to no prior experience needed.
Day and Night Crews, Saturday optional Over-Time. Decent benefits after 1 year.

A typical day at work consisted of arriving at 5:45 am.
Conducting a forklift inspection sheet.
Making sure the machine is working properly is critical for a productive day.
Picking and Building lumber orders consisting of various construction materials.  
Never a dull moment, lots of overtime !
Always outside, dress for the elements !
Some days i would go on deliveries to assist the Gillie's Trim and Door department.

I've learned working at Gillies how important pacing and time management are, as well as speed and skill.
Workshop culture has been interesting for me, I have a background in retail so my people skills helped close the "new guy" distance between other workers.  
I've learned more about the value of team work and communication.

I enjoyed my time working at Gillies Lumber as a basic receptionist and office assistant. I found that sometimes there was a lack of work which would be difficult to navigate throughout the day. However, a full-time position at Gillies Lumber would be a great job for someone looking for a relatively slow paced (sometimes fast paced in sales, or during the summer season which is busier) office position.

I hurt my self over 5 times underived 3 months working there, the whole stacking team when thru over 10 people already, under pay and lie about benifits and raises,  they have under aged worker's there too u work 10 hrs a day in a unsafe work place
