Practical Nurse in the NWT working in a nursing home in Fort Smith. This little community is beautiful. The NWT government pays great and have excellent benefits and incentives. Locum work can be anything as short as 6 weeks and you can stay as long as you can. Permanent placements even give the option to bank 20% of your pay each week and after 4 years you can take an entire year off - paid!! Just one of the many perks that make NWT one of Canada's top employers.

As with anywhere, you will find people both easy and hard to get along with. However, if your only reason for working north is money, you may have a hard time getting along with your co-workers, as many hate southerners coming north only to "win the lottery," then leave as soon as their bank account is full. If you take time to know your co-workers, residents, patients, neighbours, cashiers, etc., you will find it more rewarding. An adventurous spirit goes a long way. 

As for the weather - it's actually beautiful this far south while still north. It's right on the Alberta and NWT border so you're surrounded by trees rather than rocks and January and February are the only months that become extremely cold, though it's a dry cold. 

Oh, and northern lights on almost any night without clouds!

Dreadful, incompetent and essentially unprofessional  regional management supervision, support or leadership.  Outgunned and overwhelmed by smarter commercial operators, contractors and employees alike. Senior regional management are institutionalised micro managers allowing the line manager no latitude at all to manage or initiate local policy or initiatives. Sadly they are deaf to feedback from line managers on the truths of local operating personal and administrative issues. Preferring to listen only to local politicians, the more vocal union body and "we are suffering" individual and great many incestuous members of staff. The more brazen staff take full and unashamed personal advantage offered by the numerous social / benefits available, thereby effectively running the senior management, who are forever accommodating and appeasing first nation rights and privileges. There aren't too many business unit in the GNWT without at least one belligerent and unproductive employee who takes up too much of local management time. The existing territorial business model would fail as a commercial enterprise.

Assign duties to maintenance staff, initiate practical & academic studies to interns, operations and facilities inspection and constant review of daily regulatory compliance. Rather than learn anything new I polish my existing operations management skills and experience whilst undertaking home study courses in my off duty time. Currently studying Marine Insurance through Insurance Brokers Association of Canada. (IBAC) Pay and administration. The workplace culture and esprit de corps is lacklustre (for me personally, unacceptable) - top to bottom, making any initiative to improve performance or introduce change very foreign. The organisation lacks any original thought at any level, particularly in the areas of accountability and reckless financial administration. I find the teaching stimulating and my involvement in a weak HR process and a wasteful financial regime completely alien.

Working in this field can be very rewarding and challenging. I found the training to be intense but there is so much to know it's not possible to gain all the knowledge you need to do your job. Ongoing learning happens as you work. File work and responsibilities can be intense and being short staffed is a constant issue. You have the support of a supervisor through call outs but there can be times in case management where that is lacking and that can be precarious. 
In general it is a rewarding and and challenging job one needs to ensure their own work life balance because the organization is not the best at promoting it.
I can see up to 7 families in one day. Some days you can feel like you go from crisis to crisis and others you can get lots of the required paperwork done. It's a paperwork dense job and the model can be very beauracratic which can make it more challenging when working with families who have experienced oppression by systems. 
I find it intrinsically rewarding to have supported a family through change and to help ensure children are safe. 

A typical day was busy and exciting. There were challenges and issues to deal with. 
All of the department directors had their own mandate and or agendas for the short and long term periods. I managed to obtain copies of every mandate and I studied them so I was prepared when it was time to act.
I was a part of the Financial - Administrative section of the GNWT working with two departments. My co-workers were mostly the financial officers, however I did have a purchasing officer who reported directly to me. 
Every job has its difficult areas, and to be successful one has to overcome the diversity of issues that arise and still keep within the Governments Policies, Procedures, and Guidelines.
The most enjoyable part of my position was the win win situation. Everything was done in a transparent, concise and accountable fashion.

Corrections is a fun place to be if you enjoy that line of work. Dealing with inmates and working with people from all walks of life. I felt at times that inmates were not treated fairly or appropriately by staff on many occasions and it was difficult trying to be an advocate for inmates without management coming down on top of you. 

Rules on how to enforce things were clearly set but once you enforce them exactly as laid out, you would then be punished for enforcing those rules as it’s “not how we ACTUALLY do things it’s what we want the public to believe” as spoken by a manager who is no longer working at the facility. 

There was a Human Resources survey completed the year prior and was leaked to the public and media which indicates all issues and displays the true state of how poorly this position is at this particular facility.

I worked in three roles across several departments over a four-year period. GNWT as a whole provides great pay, benefits and time off; however, depending on management, you may or may not be set up for success. I've had great managers and then others who provide you with no context or training.

There are numerous opportunities to acquire external training and, depending on the position, duty travel that allows you to see more of the NWT. 

In my experience, there was a high expectation to do work above and beyond when other team members consistently fell short on their own workloads, resulting in overtime being expected rather than requested. Both favouritism and nepotism are alive and well. 

All in all, I would work for the GNWT again, but I would definitely have to be firm on boundaries in some departments and advocate for myself to avoid burnout.

While working for the GNWT Department of Transportation I had many little jobs to do, I started my morning off with the coffee run for all of the employees, then i went through the mail and sorted through it.  I had to go online and make sure any alerts for the highways were updated, I also did this over the phone.  I had many documents to proof read and make sure it was the proper layout.  I also gradually started doing work in finance and worked on the filing system.  I absolutely enjoyed working with my co-workers and the head of the office was very easy to work for.  The most enjoyable part of my job was the challenges I came across every day and the hardest part of my job was to keep up with all of my co-workers.

Work load varied on a day to day basis; some days you just take initiative and create projects to keep busy, other days, you may have numerous letters to edit/format. Every day, you used the mail log system to log in or log out mail.

I've been with the same department for 10 years and all my coworkers were great to work with.

The hardest part of the job was probably training a new Admin Assistant.

The most enjoyable part was the great staff and covering off for more than one Administrative Assistant at a time; sometimes, I was covering for 3 Administrative positions anywhere from 1 day to 1 week or more.

What is the best part of working at the company?
The experience I have gained working with first nation by learning there history and part  take in the activities were a learning process for awareness. Which lead me more to understand the importance of  embracing other beliefs.


What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
The accessibility  of goods and services.

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
Still promote the native culture by getting elders participating in their cultural activities.
