My job as a Sales Associate/Cashier has given me a start on how to provide great customer service and to assist customers with trying on different types of clothing. Management at my location is pretty good, however they push you very hard sometimes even when they know that sometimes a sale can't/won't happen (during slow days, or even when the customer clearly just wants to look around and I've done all I could). The coworkers are excellent and are always in a positive mood as well as friendly, which makes it very tolerable. Nothing terribly hard or amazing since it's such a basic starting position to be quite honest. However, they always hire so many people to work for my location that it's completely overstaffed. This leads to not getting enough or even barely any hours/shifts. Even though I'm currently still employed with them with what should be a part time permanent position, I haven't had a SINGLE shift in months. I know most, if not all, of the people that still work at my location don't even get more than 20 hours a week. I understand that sometimes hours get cut due to economic/business reasons and I'm not expecting to get an insane amount of hours weekly, but this is just ridiculous. They might as well advertise that they are hiring seasonal associates without promising how many hours they'll receive. They really need to rethink their hiring practices and policies in my opinion. Lastly when it comes to pay, it's very basic at minimum wage. Don't expect any raises (unless min. wage is going to go up while you work there, or you are making a crazy amount of sales and the managers favor you). It seems to me that there is little to no room for advancement from within, unless again you are just beyond amazing at the job and the managers "worship" you, or you have prior management experience from somewhere else.

At first glance, it is a perfect job.  Typically get the hours you want, asking the manager is all you really need to move positions (same base pay).  Younger staff, personable people.  The job starts weighing harder on you a few months in.  Managers can be flaky and unhelpful at times, and while they are often doing their best, they can only do so much to salvage a dying company.  Furthermore, Sometimes managers like to pull rank on each other, which makes things difficult in higher stress situations.  Often, I would show up to work and they'd cut shifts that didn't need to be cut, often leaving two people to handle a busy days' cleanup just to meet comp.  On special promotion days and holidays, managers would get food for the staff, which was nice.  Customers are the worst part of the job, as to be expected.  Often, managers will bend company policy without explaining them to the customer, so it reflects horribly on regular staff, who now look stubborn and uninformed.  Pay is increased based on performance, but seasonal employees make a higher base and often are asked to stay, and are often not the most competent workers, leaving lower payed and overall better employees doing most of the work.  Pay is also not scaled, so if minimum wage increases, no matter what your current salary is, it will not increase with it, which feels like a wage loss.  Not a horrible place to work if you have ins with managers, but it gets draining and monotonous (even if every day is a new experience, it's usually a cookie cutter bad one with customers).  Also has one of the best discounts a retail store could offer.

As a customer service rep, you are expected to resolve all calls in 5 minutes 10 seconds. You are not suppose to stop, or take a break in between each calls. All of your conversations are recorded, monitored and assessed on IEX. Adherence rate is 98% which means you are allowed one minute every hour to go to bathroom, sip some water, etc. Your 2, 15 minute break and 30 minutes lunch schedule changes daily. You can only find out your lunch and break time every morning after you login. If one call goes into your break or lunch it is counted against you. You are suppose to find out today's sale on at least 7 brands and two countries, learn about any ongoing issues, read and respond your emails within 5 minutes during "5 for you" time slot.  After one week of self learning online training, you start taking phone calls without practice. The training material is very limited. You are expected to learn at least 7 brands merchandise and policy (all different return dates etc.) for US, Canada and maybe Europe. There are many delivery companies with different methods to track, contact or resolve issues. To resolve the issue often you must partner with CAS helpdesk, IT, supervisor, or other department via text or phone all while talking to the customer and the time is counted against you. Sometimes you will be tossed between departments until you get some answers. There is always a problem with the website, sale, delivery or merchandise. 

I was relocated during the holiday season so hours we good, almost too good. They were long stressful and they would extend them without informing you and wouldn't let you go until your section was clean.They didn't hire people to work in the morning (unless it was shipment, which usually got cancelled...) so the store had to be nearly perfect for the next day which I find to be so pointless because that is the point of hiring us, to get more hours when things are incomplete to do the next day, to clean up before the store opens. Anyways, be prepared to have your shifts cut or cancelled do to over staff or some lame excuse they keep saying. Be prepared to not be scheduled at all once the holiday season is over. That's why I'm looking for a second job right now because I have a life and unfortunately it's not cheap, and I can't keep spending it at home doing absolutely NOTHING and wondering if my shift would be cancelled or not. I don't understand why management gives out unfair shifts when you're the one with more availability, doing the hardest work but getting the most turned over? It gets really discouraging and just makes you want to quit. Would only recommend working here for seasonal just because that is the only time they would want to give you ANY consistent hours. DO NOT WORK HERE FOR A FULL TIME/ PART TIME JOB! You will just end up leaving based on lack of hours because they keep hiring people...

It's an alright company to work for if you're a sales associate because you're not abused and tormented by the unrealistic goals corporate puts in place. As a manager it's horrible, contradictory and hypocritical at times when working for incompetent upper management and trying to obtain unrealistic goals for this company.

It can be challenging to move up in the company when tenured staff in the above position don't want to move up to a general management position. 

They changed the whole scheme of things to where Human Resources is not as important as displaying the product. This is ridiculous!

There is no accountability from upper management and when you try to hold people accountable it's shrugged off.

I have learned how not to run a business.

Coworkers need to take more accountability and if they're not working out then demote or terminate them.

Yes, I plan on looking for another job that promotes from within and is not afraid to hold their bad employees accountable. 

As you can see, Gap holds onto bad management and loses their good ones and they wonder why they're not making any money.

The rating should be one star but it wasn't allowing me to change it.

The hardest part of the job is handling high customer traffic during peak times while keeping everything organized. The most enjoyable part is interacting with customers and being part of a positive team environment

The Gap is a fun workplace with limited hours. Management is somewhat accommodating but will not exceed a certain amount of hours for their staff in retail stores, yet they continuously hire groups of new people to add to already over-staffed store. You will typically receive 3-5 hour shifts. You can expect to be scheduled for about 10 hours a week unless you ask for more or pick up shifts, in which case you'll find it difficult to exceed 15 hrs/week. Pay is standard minimum wage. 

There is not much to do, however management will "create" tasks in order to keep you busy, but it does not exceed much more than folding, hanging, and telling customers about store offers. They will watch your cash performance. If you do not get a certain percentage of customer e-mails, it will reflect poor performance, which creates unnecessary stress. 

The employee discount is fantastic at about 30% to 40% off on top of promo offers. This discount also extends to Banana Republic and Old Navy, although the percentage off decreases at ON. Staff can range in personality, but they are mostly friendly people.

Management is inconsistent. They keep hiring new people when they always send you home early or cancel your shifts a day in advance.

 I don't know how they can keep hiring new employees when they can't even give hours to the employees they already have. They say full time hours but send you home because management has no idea how to budget. Expect only $90 per week or in 2 weeks (get paid biweekly) you get paid $190 at most... that's with you picking up extra shifts.

  3/5 managers are very rude and made you feel scared to make any mistakes because of the attitude they give you. You are not treated with respect from management. One manager will tell you will thing and the other manager will get mad at you for doing that exact same thing that you were just told what to do. Hours inconsistent and not a good working environment. Only plus is the other employees are nice.. but almost all employees have a problem with management styles. 

Hopefully other GAP locations are better.. hopefully it's just this location...

Gap is a great place to work in terms of coworkers and discounts. Coworkers are friendly and the discount is great considering it’s already an outlet store. Management has switched over and unfortunately as a full time university student I struggle to balance work and school because management has become very strict about absences. Before I could post my shift, even with very little notice, and it was fine. Now, even if I post it weeks in advanced I will be penalized if nobody covers it. I understand if I was one of the only workers, but most of the time there are 8+ people working at once. The majority of the workers are students as well so it’s not very easy to get a shift covered unfortunately. Also, you are scheduled in ways to ensure you get the shortest break possible, and sometimes even scheduled during times outside of your availability. It’s very hard to get in touch with management outside of your scheduled hours. If you are a student, I recommend you find a workplace that is more understanding of your fluctuating schedule and understands that a minimum wage job cannot ever come before your education.

Decent first job, the other sales associates are great, and the discount is good but management is terrible. Giving your availability is useless because the general manager will give you any shifts without consideration of the individual and their time and effort, shifts are scheduled with no care of the actual employees. At first I thought the job was pretty good, and a pretty average retail job, however I always felt that whatever I did, and I was not alone in this feeling, but nothing was ever good enough to please the gm and the gm would get mad if things were not exactly how the gm had planned them to go. I learned a lot from the job and am appreciative of the experience, and as a first retail job it is decent, however I also feel that in talking to people working at different retail jobs in fairview, that the way employees are treated, after a certain extent it gets frustrating. Also after working there for more than a year and also doing more for the store than the newer employees that were recently hired, I would have hoped to be getting paid a little more than the new employees who do half of the tasks the older employees do.
