I worked at Gateways Vancouver branch for a few years, and while I initially hoped for a positive experience, it quickly became apparent that the company culture was not supportive. The work environment was highly toxic, with poor communication and a lack of collaboration among teams. Management seemed more focused on profits and margins, then they did support or training for the technicians. There were frequent changes in direction without clear explanations, making it difficult to meet expectations. 
Leadership did not provide adequate feedback or guidance, and when feedback was given, it often came across as dismissive or unhelpful. 
In addition, there was little to no opportunity for growth or professional development. The work was repetitive and uninspiring, and despite expressing interest in advancing within the company, there was no clear path for progression. The compensation did not align with the workload or industry standards, which further contributed to dissatisfaction.
If you’re looking for a place that supports its employees and values their contributions, I would not recommend Gateway Mechanical. It's a challenging place to work, and unfortunately, it seems like employee well-being is not a priority.

Gateway has been one of the best places I've ever worked at over my career. If you are an apprentice HVAC/R mechanic, I would most definitely recommend working for this company. I feel you'd get an almost comprehensive exposure to the wide array of equipment we are exposed to in our field. Mobility is another great reason to work here. I've seen employees start in Calgary, work for a month, then get transferred to the island for the remainder of their career. With shops from Winnipeg to Vancouver Island, there are many locations to chose from. There is a really great safety culture, and a forward approach to the reality of the world we live in today. It wasn't always that way, but the company has changed with the times and continues to progress. It is easily a place where someone could stay for an entire career, or just for a few years to gain some really great experiences.

This company should be avoided like the plague. You will starve for work 9 months of the year, then finally summer will hit and you will get steady hours, till fall rolls around again then your back to begging every day for atleast 1 job to do. They lose customers faster than they can sign new ones. They have almost no maintenance contracts so the work is super unsteady. The work culture is everyone around you is a vulture ready to steal from you and nobody will provide support if you need help. They’ve had 2 service managers quit this year alone, ontop of losing 4 senior technicians. Used to be a great place a long time ago but theirs no chance their going to recover, since even their biggest customers want to sign with a different company.

Before I took the job I was told by many people that knew Gateway Mechanical that it would be wise to pass on this job but I was trying to remain optimistic and hoped they would be wrong about Gateway. Sure enough they were right and I was wrong. Management is surely a joke and dispatch is nothing but complete drama and a lot of back stabbing going on. They say to do something so you do it but next thing you know your getting in trouble for doing exactly what they said to do. But...if you do decide to take the job...whatever you do, just don't ask too many questions...they say to ask a lot of questions so you learn how Gateway does things but trust me, don't ask questions it'll bite you in the rear in the end because they will say you don't know anything...good luck

it was a great place to work when i started now not so much. management doesn't seem to care about the field workers. you start a job and get no prints or idea of what happening unless you drag it out of the office. then you have industrial levels of safety in a commercial setting with no added time for all the paperwork. if your running a job you have next to no decision making abilities but all the liability from the decisions and time frames thought up by the pm's.

I worked at gateway for many years on the tools. It is honestly a great place to apprentice if you want to learn a lot and looking to make lots of money. However you will find that overtime the 50-80 hr weeks are not worth it anymore and that it is a single mans game. You will also get yelled for trying to get off early- aka a 8hr day. In my experience, you were just a number. A person in a van that makes them money. No work life balance. A lot of management issues. The techs you work with though are generally a good group of guys and are pretty knowledgeable.

Gateway is an organization that strives for nurturing its employees on one front, and for growing nationally on the other front. What I have learned about them is that they do genuinely care about their employees, and that they're unusually transparent for a privately held company. In my short engagement with Gateway as a contractor, I noticed that they encourage learning and promote staff that earn certifications or degrees, adjusting their compensation accordingly.

I loved working at Gateway, my coworkers were great and the environment was fantastic. The only problem was wages. I am now making $10 more an hour elsewhere than I ever made there for the same job, one of my team members at Gateway confided in me that they hadn't received a raise in 7 years before I left. If they want to maintain loyal and happy office staff, they need to compensate them fairly and reward their loyalty and hard work. 

Once was an amazing company is just a shadow of its former self. Now it’s just chalked full of time thieves and techs with zero clue how refrigeration works. All the good fridge techs have left and what’s left couldn’t fix a freezer if their life depended on it. Sooner then later they will lose the Walmart contract to a better supermarket company like jones or control temp and then everyone will be unemployed. Do yourself a favour and look elsewhere.

Worked doing supermarket grocery store installs for 5 years, now with the service department. Learned how to install and fix lots of different equipment. A day on service can be anywhere from working on tube heaters, hvac maintenance  to dealing with down racks on supermarkets. Can be hard at times trying to learn about different things but it’s a good place to work to keep the brain sharp.
