I was miserable working at Gauer Olsen. Everyday I walked into work wondering if I was going to be fired over mistakes I was not trained properly to know not to make. Management did not provide me training or constructive feedback. Feedback was minimal or aggressive depending on the manager. I don't feel I learned much about accounting and actually grew to dislike it during my time here.

Other staff accountants could be helpful but there was always a sense of unease them. Everyone seemed so miserable and uncomfortable, and it made asking for help hard. Many lunch circles were devoted to complaining about their jobs to the point where I wondered what anyone was still doing working there. They also tended to be very clique-y and not welcoming to newcomers when I was there. I felt very lonely and unsupported all around.

The partners are decent people but I think they have their heads in the sand about the state of their office. They think that staff parties will magically boost morale and make everyone forget about all the critcism and fear-mongering thrown at them during their work week. It won't. I hope that they can learn from their mistakes and reflect on what's gone wrong. I keep in touch with a few ex-Gauer Olsen employees who share the same sentiment as me: Gauer Olsen is not the place to start a career you can be proud of.

Like I said above, I do hope the partners can reflect and fix a lot of what's going on in their company. They have good potential (no crazy overtime, great location, nice office amenities) but that stuff loses its shine for employees who leave work emotionally exhausted every day. It really comes down to valuing your employees as people and not as work horses. 

I worked at Gauer Olsen as a Staff Accountant. It was busy but very rewarding experience. The fast pace environment provides a wide range of experience that helps you grow quickly as a professional — the difference in knowledge and confidence even after six months is noticeable. 

The managers and senior staff are approachable, supportive and consistently working on improving training processes. The partners are also engaged in the development of the employees and provide great opportunities for growth.

There is also a welcoming culture with great staff events that make it an enjoyable place to work.  You get access to basically all of the Save on Foods Memorial Centre events. I’m grateful for the experience and connections I made during my time at Gauer Olsen. 

My time at Gauer Olsen was very pleasant. They hire smart and driven people that help motivate and train newer staff. The learning curve is steep in public practice but they have a wide variety of clients and work to keep things interesting everyday.

The team was very fun. Lots of work social events and time to have fun. Hours were very flexible to suit your style and work hours. Management and partners were helpful and willing to take the time to talk about anything you may have concerns about.

I enjoyed my time at Gauer Olsen and would definitely recommend it as a place to start your career to learn a variety of different things. Lots of room for advancement and they do not hold you back. 

My time at Gauer Olsen was typical of what you would expect from public practice. It was fun, exciting and lots of work. Definitely some turn over for those that aren't able to make in public practice but for those that like it, Gauer Olsen is definitely a good place to be.

You get exposed to a lot of variety and learn everyday. The partners are helpful and engaged with the staff.   Benefits are good and the office is nice.

The people are fun and when time permits, the parties are great to get out and let the stress out.

I would recommend Gauer Olsen for CPA students to learn what Public Practice is all about. If you are looking for progression and have your CPA, the firm offers that as well it seems.

Would not recommend. You can't help but feel like another cog in a machine. Constantly feels like your job is in jeopardy. They do have fun office parties/events which they love to boast about at every given opportunity.....but you have to manage to hold your job long enough to see what the fuss is about. Even then I don't believe that makes up for the day-to-day dread of having to work here. I like my workplace to have a positive work environment and to treat their employees with respect, but to each their own. Best of luck to the next victims

I have been working at Gauer Olsen for over 3 years now and love my job.  Everyone is professional and works hard while also knowing how to have fun.  A few times a year, we take a work day to enjoy fun staff activities including kayaking, bowling, escape rooms, laser tag and go-karts.  We have epic Christmas parties and regular Friday afternoon drinks.  Management is very supportive of a work/life balance.  I'm lucky to enjoy the work I do, the people I work with and have a job that I am happy to go to each day.

Partners are very rude and tend to belittle you for making mistakes even if you're just a student. They only offer 1 week of vacation which you have to strategically use for studying for your CPA exams. There is also no training provided. It is a sink or swim environment and you can be let go at any moment. There is constant turnover.

Working for Gauer Olsen is busy, stressful, fun and full of surprises. There is never a shortage of work or learning opportunities. Gauer Olsen is a busy firm so you have to learn quick but you are always seeing different types of files and advancement is always available. You do have to be able to deal with deadlines but they do reward you for that.



I have worked here for a few years and enjoy the fast-paced aspect of public practice. This firm offers learning, fun and a good public practice experience.

Great people to work with and a great environment. Lots to learn from the senior team and good benefits and rewards! I would recommend the firm for anyone starting out their CPA career.

If you are a new accountant, save yourself time and trouble. There was no training provided. Management never gave any helpful feedback for improvement. The only good part was young coworkers who were helpful in answering questions. However, there is no job security as you can be let go any day.
