I love the culture at Genesee. I work from head office and I have seen so many improvements and initiatives we were able to take in order to support the field. I hear a lot about how in bigger companies management out of sync with railroad reality; it is not the case here. We visit the railroads, we check-in with field supervisors, employees have a voice… And since the company owns mostly shortlines and is smaller than higher class freight companies, there is more work-life balance and we do take the time to better employees work experience and consider the feedback. On paper it should be a great place to work. Unfortunately, it's far from it. Although I've made many great relationships with coworkers, the management is terrible. Lack of budget to better the track, lack of materials for proper basic maintenance, lack of machinery, lack of common sense and sadly, safety comes second in "urgent" situations. Working backwards, doing things over and over hoping for different results rather than properly performing the work the first time is incredibly frustrating. It often feels like the local management is working against you and will throw you to the wolves when they are looked at by upper management.

Nothing no overtime, terrible management

Traveling, disrespectful managers,no personal time off

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
Dirty,loud,most machines are junk

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
10hrs in boiling heat with long sleeves on ,as per company policy,not short sleeves,absolutely ridiculous

I use to work for GWRR horrible place to work,they say possiblity of advancement but  that is false.Transportation you have no life or quality of life. Family life Is impossible and could take many years to have a schedule.Management under qualified. Will i go back never i prefere make half the money and  have a family and work conditions with no schedule and 2 hour calls always turning around your phone 6 out 7 days on call

I worked here for almost 2 years. I loved my experience as a Financial Analyst. Amazing work life balance. Nice colleagues. Respectable workplace. Flexible Schedule. Expect overtime during month end. I honestly did my job and surpassed it at times and management was always nice to me. You are respected as an employee and have autonomy. Its not a super corporate place - its more of a family style environment.

Management from any level is respectful and sits down to have lunch with everyone else.

Team work: the colleagues are always helpful. 

They want you to embrace new challenges: it's almost always a chance to develop a new set of skills.

Overall compensation is very fair.

Has been a good career. Class ones such as CP or CN have a defined benefit pension plan. That is the ONLY thing the class ones have over us. If you are thinking about a railroad career St Lawrence Atlantic is a good place to start

Good place to work but the future is is in question due to the contract expiring contract with CN. Management has a good safety culture and works hard to put safety first.

Great health insurance, lots of ot during production season, management is kinda lacking sometimes, outdoor work envirmwnt with great views. Overall this is not a bad place to work

We installed, maintained, and repaired pneumatic, rotating machinery , electrical, as well as mechanical equipment. Lots of opportunity for learning.
