Genoa Design International

I was hired in I.T. at a higher tier.  I was told no one in the company had my skills and qualifications. At first I was excited because there was real opportunity to modernize the infrastructure and bring Genoa out of the 90s... What I didn't know is that they already had one guy who was experienced in software development, programming, databases, systems administration, infrastructure, security, analytics, project management, networking, operating systems, support, printers, etc... They didn't want me to modernize and manage their infrastructure, they wanted someone to blame when existing configurations were failing. Which happened a lot. I was under conditions where I found, documented, and recommend industry standard practice but I wasn't allowed to act on anything constructively. I felt like I was in front of a fire with a fire extinguisher but I wasn't allowed to use it because the director originally put out fires by blowing through a straw. So I left Genoa as soon as I could. It was also a nice touch that 2 days after my manager was contacted for a reference Genoa decided to give me an ultimatum to resign or be fired. Classy place. I got the other job and leaving Genoa was amazing. Met some cool coworkers but what a terrible place to work. I'm not sure what it's like as a designer but I'd never recommend an I.T. position there if you want to learn about I.T. 

Genoa looked great on paper. But I think there is a reason why they don’t seem to get the same attention as other local companies. First off, people are quitting in high numbers and from all departments. Really big retention issues there.

In my department a lack of experience and knowledge at the top led to many poor decisions. Narcissism and ego prevented those issues from being fixed. The result was a department constantly under unnecessary stress. Burn out is real and fear was the motivator.

I had high hopes for Genoa but unfortunately it was one of the worst places I’ve ever worked. Luckily my experience allowed me to find work elsewhere pretty quickly.

I never worked at a job before where the egos were this big. Genoa looks good on paper, very nice modern office, welcoming first day, etc. 

Once you sink your teeth in to the company, you realize why there is high turnover rates. It’s a boys/girls club. If you’re not there for a minimum of 5 years, you practically don’t exist outside the group you’re placed in. 

They promote “anyone is willing to help you” but I don’t know how many times I’ve been left on read or sent to someone else, only to repeat the process. The work is fairly easy, but spending 8 hours a day “designing” can lead to burnout. 

The hourly rate is low, it creates low morale when they report their quarterly profits. It seems like they’re doing everything except increase rates to try and keep staff. 

Overall working here was pretty good. Work was simple and they provided plenty of training where it was needed. They promote with tons of perks like snacks, lunches, break rooms, gym on-site, employee stock options and a flexible work schedule. The biggest issue was pay. Having left the company my next job had more than a 40% pay increase. Perhaps this is different with higher levels but as in a junior position I would not recommend it.

Genoa Design was a great place to work for many reasons. It was like family where everyone treated each other with respect and equality. Even though there were deadlines to meet, there was always time for fun through team builders and team lunches. There was room for training and improvement which was always encouraged by the management team. I thank Genoa for giving me 5 years of experience.

This company is a really great place to work — the culture is friendly, people genuinely support each other, and there’s a strong sense of teamwork. Lots of communication, you actually feel like your ideas are heard. Overall, it’s a positive environment where you feel motivated to do your best.

Was employed as a designer, but didn't do design work. Was asked to cover for an employee who accepted a new role, then got laid off. would not recommend working for this company. Pay is not acceptable for this role.

People are nice, but lack of steady, continually strategic. 
When there are more money, it expand too rapidly and hire unnecessary and high pay position.

I really enjoyed the staff at Genoa. The people there were great and my time there was relaxing and not a lot of stress. They have a good social program and people are always looking to include events into the work week or weekend.

Company is growing fast the growing pains affect the productivity. Managment dose what thay can to help but some of the processes are not clearly defined and can be very frustrating at times.
