I start my day by reading or listening to reports from previous shift to see if there is something I need to know that needs to be address and then I will do my rounds to check if any of them needs to be change or go to the washroom or if they need some snacks or anything. Then I prepare all the stuff that I need for my entire shift, while doing this I am paying attention on call bells. During meal times I will get them ready and assist them to the dining room and serve their meals then after meal I will assist them to their room. After dinner I assist residents who are scheduled for bath. Because my shift is all evening I help residents who wants to go to bed early by assisting them to the toilet, washing, brushing and changing their pads and putting their pyjamas or night gowns. I serve snacks to those who wants night snacks, then slowly I continue assisting my other residents getting ready to bed by toileting, washing, brushing, changing pads and putting their pyjamas or night gowns. I report to my nurse immediately if there is anything I see that is unusual to the residents. During my entire shifts I keep checking my residents to make sure that they are all okay and that I meet all their needs, keep answering call bells. I tidy up every thing, clean up my mess, sanitize my cart and wash wheelchairs if needed. What I learned is, people with dementia has different behaviour therefore it is important to know them, by doing so I can be able to understand their needs and help calm them down. It is necessary to comply with the management protocols and policies and respects everyones culture because we live in a multicultural society. To me the hardest part of the job is when I was new as I don't know the residents and I don't know their routines. The most enjoyable part of the job is when my resident is happy and satisfied with the work I have done.

I have worked in many places and I must say this is the worse. It is not the staffs fault for being bullies and wanting to dump their work load on you. The facility is hard on 2 person lifts, and it must be 2 person. But if your new the staff go on their breaks leave you with the resident on the lift and you must go around asking people. When you finally find someone they say their on their way for break. All this are signs of short staff. As soon as you start your shift at 2:30 your running! The entire shift until just before the shift ends. Mind you I was not in a heavy group. Nobody helps. The staff complain complain and complain to management and they don’t listen and don’t care too... All this was during my first week there. After so many complaints all I heard was you guys must work as a team. The typical safe card to blame staff for not being united when clearly the ratio is horrible..... gossip is the #1 thing here. If you have experience in the field you willl be tested here.  If you have no experience and it’s your first job you will be chewed up and spat out. A lot of my orientation co workers didn’t show up again. Only those that it was their first job stayed. The need to work and the training and treatment they got from the staff here at George Derby will make this new staff sour and mean just the way they were treeted. Hopefully something changes cause at the end of the day it is the residents that pay the price...

First of all, I worked on this facility for a short period of time. If im not mistaken 3months. Having said that, I was able to witness and experience myself the pros and cons and willing to share them.

Honestly, I didn't have a good experience while working with them. I have tried working on different floors and it all comes down to one thing. The workload is heavy. You are sweating at the start of your shift, I tried having 14 residents on my assignment. Half of it are all with lift. On top of that, you have to do showers in the evening and help serving and feeding in the dining room. What's worst is the lack of team work, they pass most of the workload to the casuals. I have been running back and forth , sweating and tired getting my 14 residents go to bed and yet non of my co-workers even ask or offered help while they are all there just sitting down chatting. I am not surprised why newly hired casuals don't show up anymore after orientation after seeing the truth about the workplace.

On the positive side, the pay was great and it was unionized. Secondly, their are lots of shifts to be offered. Staffing calls almost everyday to offer you shifts.

A typical day at work starts with receiving report from the night staff, then assisting residents with morning care such as bathing, dressing, toileting, and transfers. I also help with meals, vital signs, and documenting care. Throughout the shift, I focus on providing comfort, safety, and emotional support.

I learned the importance of time management, teamwork, and culturally sensitive care. Working with elderly residents taught me patience, empathy, and active listening. I also improved my communication skills with residents, families, and the healthcare team.

Management was generally supportive and approachable. They encouraged teamwork and reminded staff about policies and resident safety.

The workplace culture was fast-paced but collaborative. Staff supported each other, especially during short-staffed shifts.

The hardest part of the job is managing heavy workloads while ensuring each resident receives quality care. The most enjoyable part is building meaningful relationships with residents and seeing them comfortable and happy.

I was initially very excited by the prospect of a new board who were determined to effect change at the Centre after several years of poor leadership and workplace practices.
Execution of removal of the leadership team, which was comprised of  an ED who brought in contracted managers, did little to remedy the ongoing challenges with leadership and licensing issues.
Very toxic work environment where bullying and harassment went on unabated, particularly leadership, despite my attempt to turn it around. 
Concerned for the future of the Centre, its residents, its employees, and its dedicated volunteers.

A typical day of work is first listen to the nursing report , assignment
to number of patients, prepare pt . to activities of daily living (ADL);
ie:help with washing ,dressing,wound care,catheters,lifting,assist to meals, prepare beds ,charting , assist other nurses ,answer phone..
Learned punctuality , organize work in right sequence and politeness,and problem solving .
Management was excellent
My co-workers were doing their part to make this kind of work enjoyable ...
The hardest part of this job is to be dealing with dementia and some
violent behaviors .The most enjoyable part is to develop friendship with staff .

In the beginning it was a great place to work but they slowly phased out staff and it was traumatic for the residents the work load was terrible but we had a great staff

A great place to work at. The work is physically heavy but our management is very appreciative of our work efforts - they're very supportive and they work hard to provide their residents as well as their staff a safe place to live/work.
Two days ago, the nursing staff was cheered & greeted at the door by management with "thank you" signs before and after their shift! It made quiet a difference!

Serious political issues within this company. If you like stress, tension and drama this is the job for you. The people on top here are not competent nor aware of the scope of issues here. No job security and no career advancement. This is where RNs go to die. You will hate working here. The reviews posted are entirely fake and likely management did it. Total losers run this place.
