Giant Tiger has great systems to work with. I truly enjoy the my work day and the flexibility it allows to be creative. The freedom to try new different things is great. The training and availability of information is abundant and easily accessible. I think the product selection is great and the customers agree it is one of the top retailers in selection and prices.
A typical day consists of opening the store with positive energy and directing staff in their daily tasks. Looking at what needs to be improved each day and congratulating and welcoming staff on ideas shared. Looking at what worked well and giving credit where it is due to those team players who show passion for what they do. Results shown are then shared with "What a good job looks like'.
Showing staff by leading with example to exceed customer expectations. To deliver the promise to give the customer the best shopping experience from the moment they enter the store, until they leave it. Getting to know the faces is the best part of each day. Seeing repeat visits a few times each week gives me a great feeling that we are succeeding in small ways everyday.
For the most part the co-workers are good there is always room for improvement in productivity. If we find a few more key talents, and negative energy from a few team members was to exit it would be in the best interest for the store. Not saying they don't do anything for the store, but if we had more positive energy it would be better for the stores work environment and productive flow.
Management sometimes can be better in communication but it is a work in progress, The manager is very good at sharing operations end, and running operations with a very keen eye on what needs to be improved.They run the store with a strong standard level to ensure the customers are coming into a well kept store.Sharing other aspects can be frustrating like what is happening with staff and how to handle certain situations that need to be addressed is not a strong point.Even though it is the worst part of any Managers job to reprimand certain behaviors that are unacceptable it is part of the job what needs to be done.
A company puts certain policies and procedures in place to have structure and proper order for all staff to follow that is not negotiable. That way everyone is treated fairly and rules are followed. It makes it easier to run a positive productive work environment for all team members and there is no factors of favoritism and everyone gets the same answer from each member of management so limitations and order is in place.
The hardest part of the job is the workload and figuring out how to share it so each team member is working to their full potential and staying busy and working with the mindset that they are going to improve things daily for the better of the store. Finding those key team players is difficult not everyone comes to work in today's society to give their 100% while at work and it can be exhausting to babysit them.
For the most part Giant Tiger is the best job I have worked at. Other retailers could take a few lessons from how we operate it is a pleasure to come to work and the systems are fun and easy to operate to get the job done successfully. We learn something new everyday and in the Retail industry it is all about change. If you can't adapt to change and trying new things constantly your in the wrong industry.
A huge pat on the back to all those at Giant Tiger who make it worthwhile to work here everyday. I hope to grow and Advance with this company until I am ready to retire. I want to try different positions and if the opportunity presents itself I will give every job opportunity my best.

Giant Tiger is a fast paced environment and every day is different so it is difficult to describe a typical day. I am a part-time employee so my schedule changes weekly so every day is not the same. However, I spend most of my time cashing customers through the register. I also work the customer service desk. At the service desk I handle returns and exchanges, as well as operating the lottery machine and tobacco purchases. When there are few customers I stock shelves that are in the cash area, mostly chocolate bars, candy and chips. While on cash we (my fellow cashiers and I) work together to make sure that hangers that come though the cash are being sorted and that we are not running out of shopping bags at each register. When there are no customers I face shelves and clean the cash area. When I work a night shift it is the cashiers job to clean all the cash register areas and restock bags. If there is seemingly nothing for me to do at cash, I speak with the manager on duty to see if there are any jobs I can do for them or if any other departments need assistance with anything.

Working at Giant Tiger has taught me quite a few things. It has taught me patients when handling frustrated customers. I have learned great communication skills while assisting customers with their purchases and questions they may have. I also learned great time management skills to ensure that all tasks I am given are completed by the end of my shift.

The management at Giant Tiger are AMAZING! They are extremely nice and always willing to help you with anything you need and are always eager to answer and questions you may have, They are considerate of any issues you may have and are so kind when you come to them to ask about anything.

My co-workers are wonderful. I'm sure it is probably unheard of but honestly everyone gets along. I have made some great friends working at Giant Tiger and am so thankful to have had the opportunity to be a part of this team.

The hardest part of the job was having to leave it. I absolutely loved working at Giant Tiger and would recommend it to anyone.

The most enjoyable part of the job was definitely the co-workers. They made the job fun. It made the day go by faster. It was something to look forward to going to because you got to spend the day with amazing and funny and all around good people. I cannot think of a day where I went to work and wasn't laughing and having a good time. I will miss them.

A typical day at work consisted mainly of avoiding a problematic employee from day one. They would NOT fire theperson no matter WHAT they pulled. The owners' wife also works at the store and has an incredible problem with communication skills appropriate and inappropriate towards anyone she has deemed to be dislikeable. She talks to employees as though the employee owed them their life and that they should be grateful to even breath the same air as her. Fortunately for me, she worked in another department and I didn't have to deal with her ignorance like most everyone else did who worked under her. After 4 months of employment, I obtained another job at a factory, and a month after that, they called me up to the office and forced me to quit. They stated that if I refuse to quit, they would fire me due to conflict of scheduling. By agreeing to quit, they would allow me to finish up my work week which allowed me to collect on Statutory pay (which was for Thanksgiving at that time). Here is the best part of it all:

Owner: "If you ever need your job back, come see us. That won't be a problem."

Two weeks after 'quitting' Giant Tiger, I was let go under probation at the factory job. I went back to GIant Tiger to hold the owner on his word, and he told me "No." He pushed me off with answers of "Not right at this moment, but when a position opens up again, I'll let you know."

I pursued him for a year; the answer: "No."

I don't have anything to share as to what I gained from being employed by this owner, except that it has put an extremely foul taste in my mouth in regards to the name "Giant Tiger".

I had an excellent Supervisor... he quit to work at CAMI Automotive... smart man. Although he was younger than me, I had no issues whatsoever taking orders and direction from him. He's a bright young man with smarts and success ahead of him.

The hardest part of the job was, again, dealing with a fellow ignorant employee, or should I say Manager.  Like I said though, I didn't work under her... thank god.

The most enjoyable part of the job was always when the difficult employee that should've been dismissed wasn't there, as well as the Manager with an ego issue also not being there; work went smoothly and uninterrupted.

I have worked at many places in my life with many faces, and i can tell you this:

THIS IS THE WORST PLACE TO WORK!

The actual job I really loved. It was fun and rewarding and I really enjoyed it. I would work that role again in a heartbeat. The first nearly year of this job was actually really great. 
The real problem was the management/staff. Not everyone of course but enough that it really started to make a difference. I worked here for just shy of 5 years and in that time my store manager had: 
- accused me of lying several times 
- told me that none of the management team liked me (true or not - and awful position to put someone in)
- screamed at me
- asked other coworkers to “keep and eye” on me
- gossiped to me and about me (admitted it to me point blank once)
- laughed at me while I was crying
- told me other coworkers had asked what they were “going to do about” me
- denied me for advancement opportunities and even told me to stop applying because they would not consider me
- constantly compared me to others
- told me they did not like me and that I was unreliable (despite never missing a day when I wasn’t truly physically or mentally unable to work) 
The store manager was the main issue but there was 1-2 other members of the management team that really just kind of joined in on the same issues and select other coworkers as well. It felt like constant bad energy, walking on eggshells but I really liked the job so I put up with it far longer than I should have honestly. It got to a point where I was dreading going in and it was really damaging to my mental health. I’m still a little bitter about it honestly because I really liked the work.  
As someone who now works in retail management elsewhere and has great role models in retail management I frankly cannot believe that my old manager has the position they do and I could not recommend to anyone that they work for them.  

I had the honour of opening Store 254, the experience was truly amazing. You all truly become a large family and the employees become your friends. Working at this specific location has grown my love for Giant Tiger as a whole, and I honestly have to say that Store 254 is by far the best location in Canada. We were trained to greet each customer and that truly makes a difference. I’ve never come across that in any other Giant Tiger store. The management team is absolutely amazing. I was proud to be trained in all departments, the original Head Cashier did a great job training her cashiers, although I think she could’ve done a better job at speeding up the line as the store always had long lines, the fashion supervisor does a fantastic job in the fashion department, the Hardgoods supervisors do a wonderful job in Housewares and grocery supervisors always keep things in check in grocery. If you’re thinking about applying to work at Store 254, please don’t have any doubts, you will have the best time working there! I’m truly saddened I had to leave, but hope you have the honour of working there! My only cons are as follows; Head cashier (as of store opening), extreme amount of gossip by staff (management tried to fix this at meetings but honestly I don’t think it did anything, there was one particular supervisor who was always extremely rude and mean to me. She was getting promoted at the time so I kept my mouth closed as I didn’t want to ruin her opportunity). New staff definitely felt divided from the Port Hope staff that came over 


Through my hometown's Giant Tiger, I got to experience being both a cashier and sales associate. As the duty of a main cashier I was assigned very important duties such as handing tobacco and lottery, stocking and facing anything nearby that was needed to be done. We would as well, when not busy, be hanging any returns, filling the slushies or completing reclamation slips. Sometimes they would allow some cashiers to go into the back and assist with stock(making you kinda like a sales associate too).The days can feel so long and some so small. 

You may have the really rough moments like being so exhausted after the hours you had worked or even a rough day with some customers and even your personal life situations. But they definitely do have moments that make the bad into pleasant ones. Like associates to laugh with, say you did a good job and support you through your worst, or that mysterious person who leaves a tip as a piece of candy, and the people who remember your face like you remember theirs. 

In conclusion, I recommend this job to anyone willing to make a learning experience out of a job.It had taught me so much about patience and speed, responsibility, and how to make a customer or team member's day more pleasant.They give you lots of hours if you're looking for a full time job and still a decent amount for students. 

P.s.The pros and cons are all neutral in my opinion

As someone who has worked at a giant tiger location for over 2 years I have had enough experience to say that the current (2+ years) management at my location especially the manager who makes the schedule is very petty when it comes to there part time staff who is all teenagers in school, booking time off or wanting to reduce there weekly hours to be more part time than casual. If you bring a concern to the store owner he gives an excuse as a response whether than an actual solution no matter the case. A typical day is showing up to work getting told about all of the things that the full time people complain about the part time people for even though when the part time staff is working they complete more than the whole full time staff, then getting told to separate even when working although the managers and keyholders are allowed to work together even when they aren't working at all, getting yelled at by customers and having the owner of the store do nothing but please the customer completely disregarding his employees in the matter even when we are being threatened. The day also includes either freezing to the point where you can't feel your feet/hands in the winter or sweating so bad in the summer to point of heat stroke. Overall giant tiger is a very draining job and nothing the part time people do is ever good enough for the full time staff.

For a part time job the pay was good, benefits were great and the job itself was fine. The staff are super friendly and are like a family. The supervisor and manager are friendly as well. The only issue is they are short on staff. I found myself being at two places at once and doing two jobs at once. Customers got frustrated when I was not in the area I originally work in because I’m being called to fill another position at the same time. I had to make sure both work was done at the end of the day. As well, poor training!! The training was majority on a computer and you had to read and sit there for a hour instead of actually being trained for a day with somebody. The training was very simple and not detailed like supposed to. The training didn’t even include certain aspects that are simply needed. Lastly, if you are in university or finishing high school do not expect for it to be a good place and easy to work here. They over schedule due to filling in other peoples “sick weeks” and do not realize the duties of a student. Overall, I would say the benefits and pay are great and the staff are super friendly and welcoming but the poor training, short staffed and support for students needs are very poor and need some major improvement. 

I worked for another retail/food company for 11 years, and now there’s not enough money in the world that they could offer me to go back there. When I left that company I was making $15.75....after 11 years AND I was HR at that point. All I ever got from that company was a 5 yr and 10 yr pin. I have been with GT just over a near now, make A LOT more than what I did with said company, I received a mug and letter on my 1 year, got a coat with my name on it, they had masks made with our company in it, they’ve paid for calypso trips for my family, golf trips, catered Xmas dinner, a massive shopping bag of goodies including a $25 LCBO card for Xmas and they constantly have draws and events going on throughout the weeks. After 2 years vested with company they pay for my benefits, I get enrolled into the full profit share (not to mention I still get a discretionary amount before 2 years) and deferred profit share. The management team are always available and willing to help you when you need it. In my opinion the ones that complain are the ones that want a free ride and don’t wanna work. This company is amazing and in my opinion there is not difficult job there. You just want to work, show up and do your job. Have some laughs and enjoy the friendly/great environment.

What is the best part of working at the company?
The best part is our Management Team as everyone is well adapted to their positions and do a great job training and very patient and kind. We have our difficulties sometimes however they have respect for us as we do for them. I feel this is the perfect job for anyone who would be hard working and do a decent job with a great personality on top.

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
Long line ups until you are well trained. And don't forget to be patient and mannerly.
It improves the stress.

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
If you are doingthe job that needs to be done and we're trained to do there are no issues. You must put each and every customer first and find your balance with them. If you cannot answer question perhaps, call on your head cashier or management team.

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
I love it when busy as the day goes faster. You must keep all lines moving and at the same time be patient and thoughtful because we deal with many different individuals some having handicaps. Be kind and ask if they need help and be generously helpful with a constant smile on your face.
