Gill Summer Camp

This was my first year working at this camp & although teaching the children was fun it was completely not worth dealing with the management. I worked at the Van Kirk location where I had heard the management was bad but I took the position anyways as I didn’t believe all the negative stories previous employees of this organization had about the management. I should have listened to them as they were completely right; the management favours their family & does not assign their family workers any tasks yet is extremely hard on the rest of us. The management is completely unprofessional & rude; does not show employees any respect. There is so much workplace politics (the employers talk about the other employees personal lives) which is so flabbergasting & abhorring as any other managers I worked with before had always maintained a level of professionalism in the workplace rather than a high school drama level atmosphere as clearly seen in this camp. If you really do want to be a camp counsellor you can find so many camp positions on Canada summer jobs website or city of Brampton/Mississauga/Milton etc also has many offers with better pay as well. Seriously, do not work here unless you’re related to the management or prefer to have your mental health torn to shreds.

Worked here for two summers. although I loved working with kids and even some of the other teachers, the biased and extremely rude management’s behaviour is what I take as token of my experience at this camp. The first year I worked there I thought they were just rude to me and some of the other new teachers because we were new to the job however the second year was the same thing if not worse. The management treats everyone with such disrespect aside from the relatives they hired; it’s a workplace that reeks of nepotism and discrimination based on association, or lack thereof. The minimum wage isn’t worth the treatment you get here; if you like working with kids find another camp counsellor job on Canada Jobs’ website as you’ll find organizations that treat their employees well.

Gill Summer Camps team consists of other university students which makes it a fun environment. Since we are only responsible for teaching math, english and outdoor sports makes the day very easy, and gives us time to focus on our lesson plans. The other classes are taught by other hired counsellors. Prior to the four weeks of onsite camp days, we are paid for two weeks prior to prep and plan, which makes for the camp days to run smoother. Lastly, the kids are great and they are all looking to have fun so they all have a good attitude. All in all, I had a great time working here.

I worked at Gill summer camp, the brampton west location for 2 summers. Before that I volunteered for a year. I loved it! Working with the kids was awesome and the other counselors were so friendly. We did some group work too. The management staff was super helpful and always friendly. This was my favourite job experience by far, the kids are so great! The day is broken up into periods and we would get many break-time periods. I think it's great that management gives their past volunteers an opportunity to work when they are older! That's how I got the job and I have friends that got the job this way too

Gill summer camp was a viable experience for my work-life as it provided me with the opportunity to further develop my leadership skills and also make an impact in the community. The camp also allowed me to develop my time management skills as the regular work requirements were often changing depending on the instructions given by the CEO.

Long days that started at 8 am for the leaders and ended at 5 pm. Had a chance to interact with young children and organize activities for them. Learned how to organize my time more efficiently and ways to make tasks more enjoyable. The hardest part of the job was managing 20-30 kids for 8 hours and making sure they were having fun and learning something new.

This job was predominately focused as a summer camp for children heading to their next grade, as it was held between the months of July and August. At the camp, I would typically help children with math, physical activities, English, Social studies, etc. Also, I would ensure the supervision of the children, when on trips, such as Wonderland, Playdium, Laser tag, etc.

The camp ran from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. from Monday to Thursday during the month of July. I learned how to be responsible by supervising the kids and taking part in teaching them. It was sometimes a bit tiring since the kids run around a lot but this experience helped me to decide that I want to become a teacher in the future.

when coming to volunteer, I always keep a positive attitude with the teacher and students. I always want to get to know kids and what they like so they have a great time here, it's always hard for them to leave their parents and come here, but keeping them happy always made them come back to have fun.
