Global Village

Global Village is one of the best places to work in ESL in Toronto.  It is located in Yorkville opposite the AGO.  One of the most upscale locations in Toronto.  It caters to students from teens to young adults who come from all parts of the world just to learn English there.

They not only learn.  They have a good time and meet new friends and learn about our culture.  They take field trips.  But it is not all about having fun.  They buckle down like troopers and soak up the language.  

Global Village has a great syllabus.  And a wonderful resource library with a vast selection of books to use and photocopiers.  They also have a computer lab.  

In a typical day at work you would teach grammar in the morning for an hour in one room.  Then you would go to another assign room and teach perhaps listening.  Then after lunch you teach another skill like pronunciation.  And so on.  Each day is 8 hours.

You are expected to be formally and neatly dressed.  Punctual and friendly.  Teaching is usually the communicative method and also functional and task based,

The management is great.  They  have a union here and they manage and they take care of the teachers rights.  The workplace culture and work ethic are one of hard work and respect for both teachers and students.  

One of the most challenging parts of the job is learning to balance all the parts of your lesson plans.  Because you teach different phases of the language.  But once practiced.  You learn to balance it out.

During the beginning you have a mentor teacher if you are in the summer teaching the teens for the first time.  

The most enjoyable part of the job is seeing the students progress in the language and pass tests and then come up to you and say I really enjoyed the classes.

In summary, Global Village makes Toronto a global ESL village and one of the best places to teach ESL.

Taught from 8AM to 3PM either in the regular program or in a specialized program. Each month our teaching level changed. I learned many aspects of teaching from classroom management to
approach in teaching. How to implement additional material for those who struggled.
Management was always supportive, as well as my co-workers.
The hardest part of my job was trying to find time for my self
personally, I loved prepping and making gets in my spare time.
I especially enjoyed meeting students from every country and I still stay in touch with them today.

All the people I work with are great and detail-oriented. We are consistent with the work we accomplish, shift goals and expectations are met and clear. The environment is friendly, but still professional. I am on my feet most of the time, and my mind is always active, which I enjoy.

First real ESL opportunity and it was lovely! I worked with students at the beginner level in the summer and it was very rewarding to see their improvement at the end of their study period!

My days working at Globe Village were very fun because we get to play our own music while the store was open. The Management at Global village was outstanding because the manager was very nice and had good vibes with all my co-workers

my job was just organizing shelves as I was volunteering. I also would take new donations and shelve them. the hardest part of the job was a small not well organized work space. The most enjoyable part of the job was seeing the interesting things that came in.

Worked at Global Village as a casual ESL Instructor.  I was a fun place to work.  I was on the sub list, so only worked when someone called in sick. I was usually left with a detailed lesson plan, which was helplful.

• Instructing and supervising candidates before and during the test.
• Safeguarding the test integrity and security

The staff is incredibly helpful and supportive. They provide you with all of the tools that you could possibly need to succeed as a teacher.  It's where I started, and still remains the gold standard for me.
