Gobind Sarvar School Calgary

This is an incredibly difficult and demoralizing work environment. Employee well-being is not a priority here. Teachers are criticized regardless of their approach — too strict, too lenient, or somewhere in the middle, there is always something to fault. Leadership at the immediate level is ineffective and untrustworthy. Rather than addressing concerns constructively, they document them and use them against staff later, even when that teacher has performed well and built strong relationships with students.

The level of internal politics is overwhelming, driven largely by those in mid-level positions who seem more focused on undermining teachers than supporting, mentoring, or developing them. Communication across the school is essentially nonexistent — staff are regularly left in the dark about decisions and changes that directly affect them.

Despite presenting itself as a faith-based institution, the school does not live out the values it claims to hold. Teachers receive no meaningful support, and there is a troubling pattern of racial bias that contradicts the school’s stated mission. This was, without question, the most dysfunctional professional environment I have encountered.

If you're a first time teacher who's eager to learn then this school is a great place to start. You're surrounded by many helpful teachers and supportive admin just as long as you don't talk about salary. There's GREAT discrepancies in teacher pay. Pay is NOT based on experience but rather how badly they want you and if you have the backbone to negotiate. Unfortunately, many very talented teachers left due to this very reason. Pro-tip: negotiate for a higher salary. They can afford it. 

The beginning of the year is very stressful with extra assessments and documentation. Barely get any EA support too so you'll learn to be very independent. Resources usually bought out of your own pocket too. Lots of extra celebrations and days off which is a double edged sword.

But overall if you're willing to put in the effort and work for less to gain experience then Gobind Sarvar is your first stepping stone. PS: you won't get your permanent certification until you've entered year 2. 

The work environment is not bad because all teachers were very friendly. But this organization doesn't pay on the grid... you will not make any money, while still working your tail off as a teacher. They expect you to work extra hours and give it your all when the salary is terrible. 

Its a traditional Sikh school, therefore students miss a lot of school days due to religious functions.. and the admin expect you to be on track with the curriculum even though students miss many school days..

They listen to students complaints and never side with the staff, which is why there is a high teacher turnover. 

The school is less than 10yrs old and is exponenionally growing.  The classroom sizes are very closely to public school but without the resources of one. There is a high turn over rate due to salary issues as the board members prioritize quantity of enrollments  over quality teachers. Salary has been the school's main issue and will most likely be a continuous one. 

Many new teachers leave once they've gotten their permanent certification hence the high turn over rate.  But if you're looking for a classroom experience without subbing then try this school out.

This was my first contract teaching and not a positive experience. The class sizes are comparable to public school but the rooms themselves are tiny and you have no resources. Probably the most mind boggling is that there isn’t a proper library. For an ELL school especially it is insane that a library and literacy isn’t more of a priority. The salary is not worth the hours you will spend outside of work hours preparing all the report cards and assessments they ask of you. The work load in a public school is not as heavy. 

Only for temporary employment. They pay high salaries only to those they want bad, often their own people. The rest will earn the very minimum while working hard and attending after school meetings. Class sizes are about the same as in public schools.

Loved working with the students great support from admin and teachers. Its a religious school iv enjoyed working here as compared to the public system. Pay scale is good the gym could be a bit bigger as the other campus has 2 large gyms. Hopefully they will combine both campus as future plans. 

Gained  valuable work experience and skills great school environment. The school admin and teacher's  werehelpful to me loved working with the kids. Gained more insight into Sikhism beliefs.

I am new to Gobind Sarvar and have had a positive experience so far. I find my colleagues and admin to be quite supportive, and I personally appreciate the positive environment as compared to the politics I have experienced in other schools. 

Substitute teacher great experience respectful students and staff. They have two campus  great to substitute. It's a religious school  which relate to my beliefs overall great experience.
