I worked here. Horrible managers replaced every few months by more horrible managers. Weak and lazy HR team. Often times my messages would go unheard, and I would be blamed for not calling ahead to say that I was sick (I did, I would never just not show up to work). The staffing was pretty bad. There are basically two sides to the building, one for residents who don't need a ton of help doing their daily things. The other side, however, these residents are closer to the end of their lives, a lot have dementia/alzheimer's or are with disabilities. The more relaxed side was heavily dominated by international workers who very often spoke in their own language, laughing very loud and you could often make out your own name in their banter. Didn't help the already tenuous relationship of kitchen staff. The heavy care side, however, is where things got really ugly.

I've never seen so much lack of care delivered to people who desperately needed/wanted it. Often times all these people wanted was someone to talk to them for a few minutes about anything. And I did. I loved every minute of that, best part of the job. They told me all sorts of things, either about how they hated living there or just missed their family. The care staff was amazing, and some of the most talented and giving people worked there. However.. there are always bad apples. Some were particularly cruel toward the seniors living there. I was in fear of losing my job or being reprimanded in some way, had I spoke up about such issues. In light of some articles of Dianna Green's, I have decided to post this review. I believe Golden Life has great strides to make in improving their lack of heart in their institutions. I look back at my time working here and it just makes me cry. So much suffering that could be avoided, but the company is too cheap/lazy to do such a thing. Sickening, to say the least.

If you value or love the old/disabled person in your life, please... for the love of God, don't leave them here.

Enjoy every day of work. Love the residents and independent clients; like the people I work alongside; have respect for the supervision and management. 

Fortunate to have working experience at more than one village, and found both to be valuable. Would recommend workplace to any and all.

A bit of blaming for situations that are within our control to resolve with creative input. Some expectation that others(team mates, management, ect) will solve problems or situations for us.

Best of all, the freedom to work "outside the box" , and forward thinking and planning for the health industry.

Cons: the union. Not in favor. Seniority trumps good workers. The Union promotes ease and comfort: kind of like a long marriage, once you have it, you let it slide and don't work hard at it any longer.

Pros: Education experiences. All employees are encouraged to complete education modules and in-services and workshops provided by Golden Life Management, not just the nursing staff. We all work for the people we serve, and  our company recognizes this, which is why we all receive education opportunities.

I feel safe to provide feedback for this employer, whereas with other health employers, I do not feel safe to provide input and feedback. I believe my feedback would be viewed and heard, not penalized.

managment does NOT Care about staff or residents. Management C.C.D, D.O.C, union supervisors do nothing but threaten their core group of employees with immediate dismissal if you call in sick, do a taste test to convince your residents they can eat what they don't recognize. Constant intimidation and bullying by management. No support for  rca's housekeepers, kitchen staff. Constantly expected to work understaffed. Constantly expected to pick up for the fact that no one wants to work upstairs because of the bully and harasser of the "LPN in charge" no one wants to work with her. Why can't they see that is why no one is bidding on lines up there. They can't understand why they can't keep staff. It's because of all the constant threats and bullying by the management. Most of the staff are sick because of the stress we feel at work. No safety for staff with violent residents. Biggest joke is in copy room there is a wcb poster that states "you don't have to deal with violence at work" oh yes we do. Everyday. We are getting punched, kicked, bit, scratched hair pulled. Management doesn't care all they want is their money. They know those of us that work there have no other choice or we would be gone. What's wrong with supporting and encouraging your staff?

Golden Life is an amazing place to work. The family who runs it truly cares about the seniors that we are serving and you can tell. Every decision is made with them in mind, and as someone who not only works here but has had family live at a Village, this is truly appreciated. 

I started here at an entry level job and was able to work my way up to a management position. This happens a lot here, nearly half of the management team has been hired from within. As an employee you are empowered to make decisions and to try new and innovative solutions to problems. This wide scope of work opens doors and helps to develop your career.

The company is very flexible, when I started to look into furthering my education. I was encouraged by the team and I was able to finish my MBA while working full-time. 

From a culture standpoint there are regular staff events from pot lucks, to ball games, to community events with the residents (which are some of the most rewarding) that keep you engaged with the company, the residents, and your peers.

Overall, as a young professional, this company has been supportive, flexible, and really has a great culture. I cannot recommend them highly enough, both as an employee and as a family member of a resident.

What is the best part of working at the company?
The company welcome new employees and assist to get settled well.  They provide online courses from how to operate overhead lifts to taking care of residents with dementia. They also make sure everyone have an orientation before starting to work so that they know how the organisation operates. And all this help me mould to the new company and boost my self confidence. I am good at learning new skills and put it into practice. 

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
Well till now I did not encountered any stressful situation at work. Everything is well organised and we have a well established protocol for everything. 

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
The work environment is friendly and we have a diversity of cultures working in harmony 

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
For me all my schedule tasks are done properly and all the residents and my co-workers are happy.

As an RCA a typical day was of course care giving to people in extended care.  I learned that most residents are not happy in extended care.
Management was a strong arm of the corporation (GLM) and relied heavily on intimidation and bullying to 'motivate' us.
Workplace culture had a good deal of fear running through it as we knew that if we attracted the corporations attention, they would harass us.  They liked us to be silent and not report broken equipment.
The hardest part of the job was working more then I wanted to and working with equipment that was malfunctioning or broken.
My peers and some of the residents made the job tolerable however I moved on when my favorite co worker was fired for reporting unsafe working conditions.

I love working with Golden Life. I started here over 10 years ago and they have been the best employer I have ever worked with. When I first started all I had was my high school diploma and since I have achieved my honors and masters degrees while working. They supported me in pursuing both by being flexible with time when needed. I know several coworkers who have also attained further education while working and they have had similar experiences.

Working with management I know they truly care, most of my coworkers have had family live in one of the Villages and personally my great grandfather lived at one of the sites and I can say that he received nothing but the best treatment by staff and management.

The "for profit" aspect is very evident. Shift differentials are minimum (50 cents/hour for W/E or $1.25 nights, but NOT both). Floor nurses pay was reduced by $5/hr, OT incentive originally offered D/C'd. Benefits package is ok, but no pension and definitely not comparable to VIHA. Extremely poor communication within management and to staff. Multiple safety concerns ignored by MG. Admin on call frequently don't answer calls, if they do, emergencies that effect the health and safety of residents can "wait until Monday". Emergency procedures not in place, or "fudged for licensing" (as per MG). Corporate MG are very patronizing, and claim be about "family" but the only family they seem to care about is their own and the income they generate.

I had the pleasure of meeting and working with some very hard working people, management wasn't. On-Site manager was over your shoulder with no filter. She made you feel as though you were very insignificant in her world. She was quick to yell and blame but when suggestions and solutions were brought up she was never pleased. It was such a stressful work environment that became taxing on my mental health. When I was screamed at and fired in a voicemail (I was past probation), I stopped returning. HR called and told me I was not showing up for my position. They forced me into quitting over the phone after I was fired via VM a week and some prior to this phone call. I would never recommend anyone to work there while the on-site manager is still the same.

Bad management, they will give a false sent of security and support, they just set you up for failure. Management advocate that they are here to help you grow help if you are struggling but it all lies. They don't care about mental health or physically health of their employees.the company just want to make money does care about their hard working employees. They will find loop holes to terminate you so that they don't have to pay you severance or give you any notice to find another job. Its all about profit, they make you think they care that you are part of a team and care about the residents but at the end of the day it's all about how much money they can make. I wouldn't advise anyone to work at any of golden life management facilities.
