Golds Gym

Most of the day is spent interacting with people around the gym and cold calling members from their software which is one of the most unorganized and messy software I've ever seen. Usually the gyms going to be over staffed with trainers because they want "diversity" so clients can have their pick, which sounds great; but in practice creates a situation where everyone is scrambling and calling everyone they can and there isn't enough to go around. This often creates multiple trainers calling to the same person so creates frustration with the member and wasted the time of the trainer. The system that records who calls who you have to manually enter and is a jumbled mess so if you put the call under the wrong but very similar category [which there are multiples of] it wont show up in your/everyone's already called list. now imagine 5-8 frantic people doing this 5-8 hours a day, mistakes will be made. This even lowers the chance of members getting personal training since it seems less personal/professional and more they want your money. which in the end that's all the gym wants, if you genuinely want to work where they want to help people, it's not here. 

The training off all middle management down is so poor, if really felt like they just threw anyone with high sales figures in and said nope with all the rest. Client protocol is scary to the point you can be given clients that are not safe to train from not being properly examined or even worse, they aren't medically cleared to exercise. and they won't tell you since its not their issue since they make you sign up for your own PT insurance. This spells huge trouble for trainers since any liability waiver wont cover you for malpractice or negligence. Also there is a lot of their accounting and sales systems that even middle management don't know, some contract mistakes are common, and others are a big confusing mess. They make you track and manually record all of your hours on top of registering to the system so it racks a lot of time sat at a desk double checking your work to make sure your pay is accurate. which in all this you are not getting paid to do. Only time you get paid is when you make a sale or train a client, that's it. 

Upper management doesn't seem to actually care about the gyms, equipment was always broken or on the verge or just looked terrible, you never see them actually getting involved with the different departments unless its on the verge of exploding. They don't care about the moral of the trainers, with no incentives, support, attention or fair pay scales. With the added idea looming that if they don't like you or your sales figures they will just kick you to the side so its too difficult to make an income that they fire/you quit. This makes Everyone peak then burnout quick, so nobody either wants to put in extra effort to make positive changes or they just leave. There's a reason these gyms have such a huge turnover, but they don't want to address it because it would be too much work.

What started out as a great impression turned into one of the worst experiences. I was hired on the spot after my interview and began working the following week. The training was okay, not the best. There were multiple different miscommunication incidents that happened and resulted in training not being done correctly. They kept changing the rules on what they wanted and expected. When you didn't do things the way they wanted, they would call you out in the group chat and berate you for not doing it correctly and then move to a private message to further correct the situation. Working at the front desk means that if any member has an issue, you are the first person they go to and if you don't have the answer they like or no answer at all, you get the brunt end of their anger and there's no management to help mitigate the situation. In terms of breaks, basically non existent unless you work over 5 hours and even then, it's rare. Which goes against employment standards as you must take a break if working more than 5 hours and there were many times I would come in to take over for the opener who works 6+ hours and they had not taken their break and didn't have plans to either. When calling in sick, they expect you to find coverage or come in sick if no coverage is found. Which again, goes against employment standards. When trying to use one of the 5 allocated paid sick days after probation, they demand a doctors note and nothing else. Guess what? That also goes against employment standards. Anytime there is an issue that either Co workers or members have with you, they do not address it at all to try and help you grow and change to address the issue. They would rather just punish vs nurture and maintain. The communication between departments is abysmal and the front desk people almost never find things out until well after it's been done. Overall, they are not a good place to work for for minimum wage with their expectations and expect the people that work for them to just take what they give lying down and not push back. Especially when it comes to employment standards. They only lime hiring people that don't know their rights as an employee and won't question anything they say or do. 

Training is quite poor, managers are usually late with no corrective effort, and most staff are only focused on their job, there is no shared responsibility, and no incentive to do so otherwise.

Once starting, there are no training plans in place, and no job descriptions exist, and no consistency is present between several bodies of management trying to manage the same roles.

In my specific region of Gold's, turnover is massive, for front desk position. Regional management will 'fire' you for expressing a will to quit, and if you do happen to get a resignation letter in before this happens, they will terminate you 'without cause.' Both of which are are against labor laws in Alberta. Further, if you do intent to quit, and they 'fire' you, they, without proof, will disclose to EI Canada that you have done things you have not done, IE, libel, which I have proof of. When asked for proof from EI, none is given.

Culturally, there are two amazing owners who really want to see you succeed, and will do what they can to help you, however, there is very little collaboration or communication about these things between them and upper management. This causes several issues internally, contributing to turnover. Further, because of ownership gives direction to subordinates, upper management is often left out of the loop for issues that need to be addressed, which makes several not get resolved.

The manager here is great with customers but not with his employees. On multiple encounters I have had to remind him of things that need to be fixed only to be told to fix them myself. These things not being part of my job description nor was I trained nor was I provided with the tools needed or the help. That is by far the hardest part of the job; not having the opportunity to make things better. Being that my department only has 1 employee working at a time, I do not have encounters with other co-workers. The few times I have had to cover shifts have been with plenty of notice. The most enjoyable part of my job is when I first meet some kids, they are often shy but turn out to be very happy and playful by the end. The next time they visit, they often recognize me and get excited. I love that transition experience. I get to watch a child see me as a stranger at first to a friend by the end.

Working at a gym we are in an environment of young, driven and motivated individuals who are there to take care of themselves. The environment is very youthful. In the position I've learned to increase my quality of customer service and truly assess what is good for the client and create a plan in the clients benefit. At a gym, people tend to complain for the smallest things so this taught me to be extremely patient and delicate.

The business is only in it's second year of business, so when it comes to management, there is room for improvement. The company structure is not based and rules and policies are changing constantly. This is the first management position for our general manager, but what she lacks in inexperience, she makes up with in creativity.

If you are working for a privately owned gym be aware that you have no rights to  corporate anything. So if you are wrongfully fired,management is a problem or if something is going on corporate will not help you at ALL. Due to the fact that it is a  franchisee location they do not have to follow the same rules are corporate owned locations.At the location I worked at the management was horrible,very unfair treatment  amongst employees. The professionalism was no where to be found in this place. There was never enough staff,supplies or helpful management. I can honestly say that I would never work for another golds gym. The free membership was not worth the headache or backstabbing behavior by management.

The job itself is easy and the members of the gym are great. The gym sells itself so it is very easy to sell memberships and earn commission, however, this gym is one of the most poorly ran organizations in the whole city. There is a strong sense of favoritism and if you are not the favorite they will “fire you” (actually use constructive dismissal which is illegal, but nobody calls them out on it). 
On top of all of that, the pay is brutal and they cut the amount of commission you make if you are successful. I would avoid this location at all costs. 
Also, no benefits.

Since I am a part of the membership sales team, it is definitely a fast paced and fun environment. I have received incredible mentorship and coaching throughout my time with the company that has challenged me to grow within my career. I love what I do, so it doesn't really feel like work for me when I'm working in a culture of like minded individuals. A have grown my sales abilities and increased by leaderships skillset. Additionally, the franchise has a lot of plans for growth so there are great opportunities for advancement!

If your thinking about joining don’t, the most toxic environment to be working in you’ll have grown co-workers gossiping about the most ironic stuff, you got the owners coming in every other day screaming and pushing sales. Keep in mind the front desk role and the sales role are combined together and yet the pay is still the same $15 when they are cutting two jobs into one, cutting their cost but adding work on us. For the amount of work you have to to the pay is not worth it. Over turn rate is messed up i think 4 people left within the same month of starting! Stay away!!!

A day at work included checking in and out of members, full operation of the frontdesk, Pro shop, and Juice bar. I was also responsible for the end of day reports and reconciliations. I received incoming calls and assisted members with payments and membership choices. Overall management was the General manager and the assistant whom I was next in line to. There was an open door policy and it made each staff a family. My coworkers was great to work with and worked together as a team. The hardest part of my job was, there was none; I enjoyed every minute of it and leaving was only for growth
