What is the best part of working at the company?
I enjoyed working in the golf industry & educating customers on what equipment best suited their needs & abilities. I've golfed for over 60 years & worked in the golf industry for over 40 years. 

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
I wouldn't say "stressful" more just disappointing. After working in the store part time for seven years, I fell sick & had to take a leave of absents for 6 months. During that time, not once did the manager reach out with any empathy or ask how I was doing. He only messaged me with a request for a doctors note. Not cool!! When I tried to return to work in April, I found it very difficult to function with the dizziness & nausea I have been dealing with. So I felt at the age of 71, it was time to step back and retire. Upon submitting my resignation & explaining why I needed to leave, after working over seven years at the store, I didn't even receive as much as a "sorry to see you go or a thanks for your work over the years"!! I took it as very disrespectful & uncaring. The management of the store in my opinion has to pick their internal game up big time & show some respect to the staff members. Thanks!!  

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
I've always enjoyed working in the store & helping customers with their golf needs. But I think I explained my opinion about the environment & culture of the management of the store in my previous comments. One thing I would like to comment on about the culture of the company in general is, there has never been any "Team Building" within the store. Such as getting out for a round of golf on the company @ a local course. Getting out for a pizza & beer/soft drink night after a Saturday closing. Anything to say goodbye to a fellow employee who has left the company on good terms. (Like I did!!) But there has been nothing. I've worked in business & sales for over 50 years & haven't been as disappointed with the lack of involvement with staff as in Golftown. Maybe I'm just Old School?      

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
Basically, check in, hit the floor & start meeting with customers. I've truly enjoyed the work on the sales floor. I love the golf industry & love educating customers on what equipment will help them improve in their golf game!! That has been the passion for me!!

Overall, I had a really positive experience working at Golf Town London.  The staff were friendly, there was a good variety of tasks that were mostly enjoyable, the products were interesting and it was fun to talk about golf all day with customers and staff!  

I learned a lot from experienced staff members, corporate support staff and the large amount of product knowledge training available to us.  I also received valuable training and experience in the areas of club fitting, club repair, merchandising, inventory management and retail management.

Working a retail schedule can be difficult to get used to for many and being in that setting during a pandemic made it very challenging at times as well (COVID-19 protocols, angry customers, lack of inventory, etc), but those things have been experienced by many this past year or so and is something brand new for everyone.  

The only real constructive criticism that I feel could be improved upon would be the lack of clear and consistent managerial feedback and communication that staff received at times.  I just felt that if feedback and communication were more consistent, formal and clear, staff would have a better opportunity to perform up to expectations, achieve their individual, store and organizational goals and work more cohesively together.

Other than that, it was a fun and challenging role, with a good group of people at a great Canadian organization.  Definitely a worthwhile opportunity, if you get the chance...

On most days, the store would be ready for customers by the closing team however opening staff turn on sims, TV's and do a walk-around to make sure store is ready.  As customers arrive, it is mandatory to greet them and continually check in with them while they visit even if they do not need assistance.  Sales are a very high priority with this company.  Hours received are sales driven!  If you don't sell you will not get hours.  If you sell, you get hours and the store reaches its daily, weekly and monthly targets, only the store management team gets the bonuses.  I started at $11 per hour and after a year received a .36 cent raise!  Employees of GT are not well paid.  My fellow co-workers were one of the best parts of the job.  We created a fun work enviroment and during the quiet times were always doing product testing and evaluations.  The hardest part of this job is being on your feet for 7 hours a day with only ONE 30 minute paid break!  The 2nd hardest part was having a manager who has no people skills.  Best part of the job for me was getting that customer fully equipped with new golf gear, fitted out, and leaving the store with this huge smile as he or she had new clubs ready to play that first round.

You are scheduled in for 1 of 5 areas of the store for your shift. There is cash, apparel, footwear, clubs, and the pro shop. I am not familiar with the clubs or pro shop so I was always either on cash, apparel or footwear. The cashier would greet customers coming into the store and of course, cash out any purchases made that day and would also go through cash-out procedures at the end of the night. On downtime, the cashier would also fold clothes and set up new apparel on hangers etc. Footwear and apparel were basic customer service positions, helping customers with sizes and any other related needs the customer requires. I learned a lot about golf and became really interested in it. I didn't know much about golf when  I first started working there, but then gain a big interest in it. Management was very helpful whenever I had a question and they were very easy to get along with. Co-workers were nice and also easy to get along with. The hardest part of the job was not getting enough hours. I was in school also at the time but a couple shifts a week just wasn't cutting it for me at the time. The most enjoyable part of the job was using the simulators on my break times.

The management prefers to hire only fluent English speaking students who have future plans to leave the company. Otherwise you are just filling voids until you leave or get let go. 
Always understaffed and very busy in spring and summer.  
Management does not recognize, respect or acknowledge lgbtq rights  or self presentation. 
There is no room for growth in this company. 
 Male dominant roles  besides cashiers and clothing department , you need to be very persistent to move to clubs, pro-shop or range  and you  are considered  lucky if its allowed. 
District management does not support staff and handles situations poorly.
Very minimal hours until spring/summer.
The best things about GT is the flexibility and shift accommodations .
Sales  in name brands and merchandising.
The discounts on everything in the store.


As a pro shop manager I would start the day by assessing repairs to be done, equipment to be ordered and check Emails. As the hourly staff came in I would quide them to there duties and respond to any questions they would have . The G.M. was a sometimes difficult person to approch or know what his agenda was.
I don't remember any parts of my job-position as being hard or difficult and I enjoyed assisting any of the staff in there duties.
The most enjoyable part of my position is the satisfaction I gave our customers, some of whom I have delt with in the past.

Working at Golftown for the last 3 years has been great. My general manager creates a fun atmosphere for us and encourages us constantly to help as many people as we can. Over my time spent at Golftown I've gained lots of experience in retail, merchandising products, interacting with customers, finding multiple solutions for different customer problems, and sales. Working with my bosses and co-workers has been a huge part of the great experience I've had because of how friendly and excited everyone is.

- Management: Dowtown Toronto store manager is the worst boss I've ever had.

A good job as student but not for a full time position.

Nice to spend your days with people with the same interest as you. Store culture was great but that was because store and regional management shaded from most of the BS from above. Executives seemed detached from daily store operations and dictate from the ivory tower. Unrealistic staffing expectations lead to salaried staff working long hours during many points throughout the year. There are some lifetime friendships that came from this job so not all bad. Some good perks too with industry discounts at the store as well as direct from supplier

Management is on their own agenda here.  It doesn't matter if you are hired part-time or full-time you get the hours you are given and don't bother asking or complaining.  They have zero empathy and understanding when it comes to personal issues and will throw you under the bus if you make one mistake.
I enjoyed my fellow sales associates and it was fun to have the game of golf in common but the rest of the workplace is all about management and sales.
