Good Shepherd Non Profit Homes

A Non Profit organization, that works for the welfare of homeless mentally ill in the community. Works to provide safe shelter for the homeless in the community. The management includes  a Director and Program Managers who co-ordinate the working of more than 40 Community Mental Health Workers.
The organization is smoothly run by the coordinated efforts of the whole team, and makes sure that the Mental Health and well being of each and every one is maintained.
The organization has various residential buildings which provides shelter to individuals who have no place to live in and the workers work together to keep the place safe for its clients.
Activities are continuously held in the buildings ensuring ts clients are occupied and are in good mental health.

GSNPH was once a wonderful place to work until management “re-structured” some staff out of a job. Very little support and guidance was given to staff from  management  to help manage difficult and challenging caseloads. Concerns expressed by staff were often ignored and used against us. Turn around among the team is high and the rehiring slow, leading to current workers carrying very high caseloads. The organization is also behind on technology and IT issues often take too long to be resolved. More recently management has been insensitive towards supporting parents and individuals with compromised health issues during covid 19. I would not recommend working at this organization.

numerous telephone calls demanding narcotic renewals and other meds.
urine tox screens/lab pickups 
lab reports 
scanning electronic files
booking appointments
adding specialists in the schedule and filling the time slots
faxing 
typing
 
The hardest part of the job was losing patients to suicide as most clients were mentally ill or transient.
The most enjoyable part of the job were the patients and their recoveries.

The work is fairly typical of a mental health housing agency. The management are nice people, but rather unprofessional. The employees are very unprofessional, and there is a terrible gossip-culture. Employees are not very friendly, especially to new employees. Management plays favourites and I never felt secure in my job. I wish I could have just completed my work, but it's hard to ignore such a terrible work environment. The pay does not justify the toxic office culture.

There are challenges with working in any social service agency. I feel that my concerns are addressed with Good Shepherd by a responsive management team. The pay is appropriate and higher than other agencies, there is a worthwhile benefits package for full time staff as well as an RRSP matching program. The individuals we work with and for make everyday something new. This is a great employer for SSW’s who are new to the field or who have years of experience. 

In the past 5 years since certain management has changed, things have turned for the worst. It is a toxic environment, and management is not to be trusted. Most people are unqualified to be doing their roles. It appears they hire just about anyone. Lots of favouritism occurs.
Referrals are based on nepotism of employees, or to individuals who's families  donate money to the organization, it is not based on risk, need, or priority. 
Many employees are looking for jobs else where, and there is a quick overturn.

Good Shepherd is an amazing organization to work for.  They support so many different area's in regards to mental health, and addiction.  Also support diverse people that are new to Canada.  They have a wonderful food bank and provide opportunities to those who otherwise could not afford it.  Going to camp, big holiday dinners.  It is an extremely safe and wonderful environment for all who access support

Lots of autonomy and client interaction mixed with a good amount of office time. Lots of flexibility with the tenants and what support looks like. Environment depends by location and team, however I was lucky enough to have a good team.

-Upper management at times makes it difficult to feel appreciated or valued

-Lack of transparency in decisions and high staff turnover

Running around getting clients what they want it’s nonstop job

Good place to work, really care for their staff and mental health/quality of life of their staff. Sometimes will deal with some troubling circumstances or emergencies but will be supported by a team and management if this does occur.
