What is a typical day like for you at the company?
A typical day as a policy analyst at the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador is dynamic and multifaceted. Mornings often start with reviewing updates on ongoing projects and staying abreast of any new developments in policy areas relevant to my responsibilities. Meetings with cross-functional teams, stakeholders, or government officials are common, providing opportunities to collaborate and share insights.
A significant portion of the day involves in-depth research, data analysis, and policy evaluation. This can include assessing the impact of existing policies, proposing recommendations for improvements, and preparing reports or briefs for senior management. Started as a Stockhandler, Physically receiving and checking goods/restocking shelves/filling orders for garage and units. Physically demanding and not enough help. Good relationship with fellow employees

Advanced to Storekeeper I, Did internal ordering of goods for unit garages and stock rooms using Oracle Inventory system/filling orders electronically for main garage/occasionally pick parts for mechanics. 

Advanced to Storekeeper II.  Estimate stock needs and order same/receipt goods into system/complete surveys for Government Purchasing/matched invoices and packing slips with Purchase Orders and certified for payment/maintained expediting procedure to ensure timely receipt of goods on order/run various reports/Problem solving as needed/act as supervisor for stockroom.  Very fast pace. No immediate Supervisor for stockroom meant I was the "goto person" and required much problem solving for stockroom employees, invoice department and outside companies as well. The hardest part of the job was dealing with employees less than eager to work. The most enjoyable thing was the construction of my new office. Since a new office had to be constructed, it was built to my own specifications and even though it was an office within the stockroom it still provided a quite and clean atmosphere. I also appreciated the relationships built with my supervisors over a period of time.

Balance the ticking queue and sometime software installation is difficult

Friendly, supportive, polite, professional, productive. 

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
You may be a lone wolf or on a small to large team. If lone wolf, you'll probably be responsible for more of your choices in how you structure your work day.
You'll have more freedom but this also means you better be responsible and good with communicating when necessary. On a team, you will be designated various tasks related to your specialty (design / networking / security / servers / DB / supports etc). There will be meetings to check in on work to be done and what you've done already.
But mostly, you will be DOING the work in your chosen specialty. So it helps to be organized, and competent in that area. So get busy now becoming good at that

Work began at 8:30 am to 4:00 pm. Samples would come in throughout the day from mines and quarries around the province to be tested to see if it was worth production for the roads. The job consisted of performing multiple tests on each sample that came in then recording the data we received on a graph, which we then passed on to supervisor who documented it. 

I learned more about sorting and different types of rocks/sand/gravel used on the roads. About cement, asphalt, etc. It was a good go for getting used to hard work environments and having to be somewhat face paced to get everything done within a time slot.

Us staff in the lab area didn't talk to management very much until she came down to complain or ask how things were coming along. The co-workers were good, open to helping you with any questions you may have.

Hardest part of the job was the original sorting of materials to begin testing. Enjoyable was how long some tests took to complete, so there was often small 3-5 minute break times throughout the day as well as the normal breaks.

This employer has zero logic when it comes to staffing, training, decisions made etc. I feel most managers have been in the role so long that they are never open to suggestions and are set in their ways with zero room for negotiation. You are not treated as a human but rather a number. They do not care for you but expect you to bend over backwards ten ways till Sunday to please them. Meanwhile they do absolutely nothing for you. Pay scales haven't increased in decades. Many senior employees are grandfathered in to higher pay scales for the same work. They like to also play the blame game. Rather than acknowledge a mistake was made and offer some training they MUST find out who made the mistake and shame them for such a mistake. Perfection is mandatory. They watch employees come and go and state "it's not for everyone". That is not the issue the issue is usually always management. Working for the Government isn't what it used to be. 

Pay increases in three steps, automatically every 12 months. This is not a good place for anyone that wants to improve things or takes engineering or science seriously. Many people here hate their jobs and are just waiting to retire, due mostly to bad management attitudes. Layoffs and union bumping are a recurring threat every few years. Everyone at manager and above is non-union and serves the political masters. Most professionals are underpaid by at least 40% and the benefits are rapidly deteriorating, particularly pension. It is not uncommon to have extremely high turn over and many unfilled positions. People that have left are usually delighted that they moved on although they were initially nervous about giving up a relatively secure position. Overall, if you need a job, apply, but unless the culture changes radially, this is no place for people who take pride in their work.

Although i was not required to be to work before 8:30 i was usually there befor 8 am, i rarely left the office before 5 pm.  The extra time allowed me to catch up after a busy day.  Most management supervisors were very supportive.  My co-workers were the absolute best.  We worked closely as a team and were always there for each other, a must when you work in a difficult and stressful environment. The hardest part of my job was removing children from their parents, even though i knew that it was necessary to ensure their safety and well being.  The most rewarding part of my job was when a 6 year old looked and me and said "I only trust you because you always tell me the truth". Over the past 12 years as a front line social worker i have learned to "think outside the box" and "trust my instincts".

GNL is all about nepotism. If you have good connection, relatives or somehow connected to the Premier or some bigshot, then you have chances for growth. Otherwise it is very time consuming. Will take years to get a good salary and position.

Handling office politics and nepotism and cronyism.

People are very nice and polite at face value but at your back they are not helpful.

It is busy but you have work-life balance.

Getting to know all the people I met across the different departments, and creating a network of contacts that helped me do my job efficiently.

Dealing with some people who were never happy no matter what you did for them.

Overall, it is a good place to work, depending on which department and division, as well as the coworkers you have in each position.

Busy, challenging, and kept the day going.

You never really knew what was going to happen day to day. As with most employment some days were busier than others. There was opportunity to learn different things. My co-workers were great and I enjoyed working with them. They were available to assist you with a problem if you had one.  The hardest part of the job was not always being able to give people the answer they were looking for, and sometimes you were their last resort but as long as you tried your best for them that is all you could do.  
The most enjoyable part of the job is when you could assist someone with their issue and get a positive outcome.
