Grace General Hospital

Duties I was responsible for:
* Input call schedule information, using information received from various programs. Once completed, it is distributed to various departments within Grace Hospital and faxed to other hospitals.
* handled all income and outgoing mail for the department twice daily.
* Prepared and distributed contact lists to all hospital departments.
* Provided support to all physicians and their trainees (medical students) at Grace Hospital.
* Collated orientation packages for Internal Medicine and ACSS Surgery residents prior to their arrival. Assigned parking passes and Facility Access ID cards.
* Set up calendar for the ER Medical Students. (These were posted in the ER staff room.)
* Provided support to the Medical Staff executive relating to meetings, schedules and appointments.
* In charge of Grace Hospital ICU physicians Time Cards (every 2 wks.)
* In charge of the Internal Medicine Consults monthly. Data was collected from physicians and was entered onto a spreadsheet/graphs.
* In charge of making Discharge Time graphs from data sent over from HSC (this was done quarterly).
* Obtained a record of the Medical Staff fees that were submitted to WRHA.
* Keep a record of bank accounts/statements, including writing cheques, as directed, for the Medical Staff executives (President, Vice-President, and Treasurer).
* Retrieved and relayed incoming messages and general inquiries.
* Sent faxes to other medical facilities when needed.
* Organized, copied and filed Program materials as directed.
* Prepared annual and semi-annual Medical Staff meeting agendas and took minutes for the Annual Medial Meeting in May. 
* In charge of making sure Grace Hospital physicians parking fees were paid.
* Organized Education Rounds on an on-going bases. Designed and distributed posters for Education Rounds once a month.
* Was in charge of setting up the Telehealth link for residents/students, and other groups, on a regular basis.
* Reorganized and updated "Procedure Manual" on a regular basis.
* Any other office duty that was asked of me.

However,  facility managers after office hours were under qualified to manage staffing situations.   They put intensive care unit in unsafe situations by sending ICU staff to fill sick calls and vacancies for other units.  This created unsafe patient care in ICU, as these patients are critically ill and need much more attention.   These facility managers do not use critical thinking to assess the situations. 

Working at the Grace, I had a wonderful, super supportive team within the Spiritual Care Unit. Treated me like family and with utter respect. Wonderful place to learn and gain experience in and understand the cultures of these departments.

Typically everyday held it's own challenge in which you would find yourself prioritizing the work load. The great thing is that we all worked as a team when the work load was heavy and managed to get through each day with good outcomes.

I was only there for a short period of time (20 years ago) but I really enjoyed it there. The staff were wonderful, the OT Manager at the time was very sweet and listened to all of the staff's concerns and really tried to make sure the concerns were addressed within her ability.

Took care of about 10 patients at a time.
Some coworkers were nice and some were not.
The hardest part of my job was dealing with an elderly person.
The most enjoyable part of my job was getting to know people and the work environment.

I loved being at the Grace Hospital this was my dream job.  However it was a casual position covering for a leave.  I would have loved to stay on.  I truly felt like part of the team.

Great place to learn and grow, difficult, fast paced, skill based environment.
