A typical day at Grand River Hospital Consists of answering the phone lines and processing requests of patient information to either the patient themselves, Doctors office's, Other hospitals or people within the circle of care of a patient and following the privacy act while completing these tasks. 

I have learned how to use a few computer programs within our department (WinRecs), filing patient charts, signing out patient charts to different floors upon admission, assembling charts, QA charts, and who has rights to  patients files according to HIPA and PHIPA.

My manager within my department has such a positive attitude and is always willing to listen and help fix any issues you have, she is a very good role model and boss to the employee's within this department and I'm so pleased to have had her as my manager during my placement for college. She was never negative to me or any employee within the time frame I was there which I though was outstanding.

My co workers always made me feel apart of there team and never made me feel left out, always willing to show me new things and I'm sure they learned some stuff from me as well.

Most enjoyable part of the job was working with such amazing people and learning many different roles within the department. I learned so many new things that I would have never thought happen within this department and I am glad I am going to walk away from here with some new knowledge.

This was one of the WORST places I have ever worked in my life. Some of my co-workers were the meanest people I have ever met. My department was full of drama every day. Management was part of it too. I would consider myself outgoing with a positive attitude and this place literally drained me of all of that. I cant lie the pay and benefits were really good but it was not worth being bullied and feeling sick to my stomach every single day i walked in the doors. My suggestion to anyone who is looking to apply to this specific department is to not do it. I think that it's something you would regret. The only thing that would make that department better is if they hired new management and got rid of any of the bad seeds who work there. I should also mention that if you do decide to work here you better know exactly what you are doing before you start. There is NO training provided and if you ask a question be prepared to not receive a straight answer. Management loves to talk in circles and leave you feeling even more confused.

Where to start with this hospital. Management very authoritarian (old style of management). They will remind you anytime that you are disposable. Management rules by splitting staff members so they continue their authoritarianism.  HR will not recognize your previous nursing experience if you weren't in UNIFOR union in your previous job. I am disgusted and left that hospital due to their attitude toward their staff members. It is  feels like an enemy is trying to put you down constantly and waiting every opportunity to punish you for no reason. I don't know why they don't progress in their management approach.  In my entire nursing career almost 15 years never saw something like this type of management. I wouldn't recommended to any nurse who want to progress and love their job. NOT THIS PLACE.

After working here for 20 years I have to say that my seniority is the only reason I'm still here. The upper management consistently chooses the cheap short sighted option which leads to a "make do" culture. They pay lip service to employee mental health and fighting bullying and discrimination but the reality is quite different. They promote managers who have the right degrees but  care only about the bottom line and have little to no practical experience in their chosen department. Favoritism and nepotism are common. New employees often comment on how poor the morale is compared to previous hospital employers. Pay is good, job security is good but beware the non-progressive  negative culture. 
Constant construction and renovation on a building should probably be demolished is also very stressful.

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
Lack of support, lack of educational training, opportunities, harassment, bullying, not taking seriously, poor management, mismanagement

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
Unfortunately, unless you could find others who have been tortured as much as you have, the work, environment is terrible. The staff are not paid enough, to deal with the extra amount of work expected out of them on a daily basis.

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
Stressful, backbreaking, frequently missed brakes, unpaid overtime sent home early, doing three peoples jobs,

I get to work around 6:50am punch in work round 7:00am. I work for Airmark at Grand River Freeport Hospital. My job is a float at the rehabilitation centre to collect garbages and dirty linens hampers on each and every floor which are three floors. Around 7:40am we take the food cart on each and every floor for the patients in the Hospital. Around 8:30 I clean the elevators, dust mop the halls ways.  Collect garbages and dirty hampers through out my shift. I learn how to assists and help a team complete a tasks. I also learn hard work pays off. Our management is the best with scheduling and always having safety briefing meetings. Hardest part of the job i staking breaks after eating and coming back to work. The most enjoyable part of the job is helping people.

Go in turn on all the lights and unlock all the cabinets for filies. answer phones call in staff of the hospital for doctors appointments and staff that need to see a nurse or staff that is sick and need the okay from the nurse to leave their shift early. I learned about WSIB claims and how to go about it for staff needed long term disiablity from the work place enivornment.  There were a few hardest things about my job one of them was listening to code blue or code pink. Another hard thing about my job was going into the office knowing that I was not getting paid and being promised a job after my placement which fell through. The most enjoyable part of my job there was all the wonderful staff that I was able to get to know and work with.

I was apart of the environmental services. So the time I was there I had three supers. They were all unorganized (even know majority of their jobs were now with a different department) they still got things mixed up and missed place (ie. Having three people booked in the same area when only one is needed). The one manager wasn't really a fan of men and would treat people differently based on that. For example, she got mad at me because I was booked in the same area for a week yet people she talked too did the same. Majority of the staff arent very nice (majority of the older age crowd) and will talk behind your back, etc. It's good money but if you think your mental state isn't the strongest I wouldn't recommend being part of environmental services.

A typical day at work includes, TOA at the start of shift includes introduction to patient and report on patient's care and concerns from previous shift staff, review patient chart and organize/plan my day.  Complete VS, assessments, meds and hygiene while establishing therapeutic relationship with 3 or 4 patients assigned to me.Meet with IP team in am and discuss patient care and plan.  Priortize care plans based on patient needs throughout the day. Assess patients comfort  and pain frequently providing pain medicatons as scheduled or as needed. Help peers as needed. Near the end of the shift empty/measure I/O and document findings. Provide TOA to incoming staff at the end of shift while introducing them to patients.

The atmosphere in the unit where I work is great. It's a pretty laid back environment and everyone is very friendly. Working at a job like mine makes it easy to want to come to work everyday. There is no stress and going home at the end of day without any stress is a very positive thing. The hardest part about this job is that my contract is coming to an end very soon and it's difficult to obtain a full time permanent job due to the number of people applying for jobs and also it's a union job so therefore seniority rules have to be followed.

I love, love, love the job here and I am hoping that someday I will be a full-time employee of Grand River Hospital.
