Grande Cache Coal

Had to make-do with machinery/equipment that is old and in poor condition due to lack of maintenance. Constantly worked on a pitch of between 17 and 23 degrees. The minimum transportation to and from workplaces and very dusty indeed. Constant fear of lay-offs. (3 major lay-offs in 3 years) 3 Major shift schedule changes in 1 year. Had a very hard time in keeping the work-force positive and motivated and motivation usually came from me and not management. (they have since changed management for the better.) The open door policy only really started to work with the new management. Permitted they do proper planning for the next mine, they will be sucsesfull in their new ventures ahead and hopefully retain their work-force for the future. They also did a bunch of work aiming towards zero harm,injuries and incidents in the workplace and should continue with the said. (I would have loved to remain with Grande Cache Coal and help and participate in achieving the above.)

I am thankfull to them for taking me in 3 years ago and helping me to obtain my permanent residence status. They do have some highly talented people and I did learn a bunch from them in how to make do with what you have in hand. Due to daily changes made in mining sequence and planning, I had to learn to think on my feet. At my age, I would like to settle down, buy a house and enjoy nature in my free time. I do not like to move from one company to another(worked for Sasol Mining in South Africa for 24 years) CANADA IS A BEAUTIFULL AND SAFE COUNTRY AND ALSO MY NEW HOME. MY NEXT STEP IS CITIZENSHIP.

Typical Day @ work:
Enter Training records received mine wide into a online software program called Intelex to keep track of training done and due.
Assist foreign Nationals and employees with completion and submission of personal information and documents.
Keep employee training files and compliance files up to date.
Assist in departmental projects. 

What I have learned:
I have learned to work with all types of personalities, levels of management and cultures in a professional manner and understanding. 

Management:
Always supportive. Love the open door policy. Assist in personal growth.

Co-workers:

The hardest part of the job:
Loosing good people and or having to say goodbye to employees.

The most enjoyable part of the job:
Being creative when it comes to creating advertisements, presentations etc.


. the extreme weather was hard but saying that the crew do take care of each other, when it is 50 below zero and the winds are blowing 100kl an hours. I 
My duties where to receive product from wharehouse, check trucks, 
safety cleaniness,running order, escort visitors on site ,the site is over 50sq miles three different mines in operations, and many departments, and where i was underground where safety was always a concern,As being a person who shows willesnes to put a extra effort in her job, management and the crews called me their BC Jem,lol I was the only woman to the underground site.

A typical day at Grande Cache Coal started with our morning toolbox talk (safety meeting and job allocation and feedback). We then plan and attend to all jobs, whether its planned maintenance or breakdowns, individual or in teams. We would end the day off with a quick feedback session and turn in all Risk assesments and job cards. The hardest part of the job was working with limited resources and spares but that helped teaching all workers how to save money, spares and and think outside the box to keep all plant equipment in a SAFE and working condition, because there is no compromise for safety.

This role provided a challenging environment with a diverse user base.  My role advanced from day to day hands on technical operations to a more strategic enterprise resource.  Understanding the organization and the data that it consumed and generated allowed me to provide management the systems and data for evidence based decision making.

This company has helped me learn many new skills and the job culture was team based. During its peak there were many incentives and benefits, unfortunately due the market many of these needed to be cut. Even during the last days of business, working together was truly an asset.

Work with allot of different people, i enjoy it very much. Like new challenges. 
I learn how to Operate different Equipment. 
We as workers worked on rules set by management.
The best part at the job was teamwork and the hardest part of the work is when co-workers do not work as a team.

12 hour day/night shifts, learned about open pit mining and basic management. Coworkers were a delight to work with. Hardest part of the job is the long hours, most enjoyable, knowing I did my work safely and to the best of my capabilities.

Overall Grande Cache Coal was a decent place to work.  The best part of the job was the 4 and 4 work schedule and the wages were pretty decent.  Job security was the worse part as it has shut down a few times since it has opened.
