Granite Club

I worked at the Granite Club for 4 years and it was one of the best experiences of my life. There are employees that have worked with the company for 40+ years and that alone speaks to the fantastic culture and job security the club provides. There are pros and cons of course. Like most positions in the hospitality industry, shift work is expected, long hours can happen from time to time, the environment is very fast paced and members can be demanding. Work/life balance can be challenging depending on what department you are in. The club offers above average pay, company paid benefits and matched RRSP, free parking, meal discounts, a ton of perks and monthly staff outings/events across the GTA. 

The club has an incredible reputation and they are recognized by other companies for their standard of excellence and the professionalism in which their current and former employees convey. The only reason I left was because I moved out of the GTA. Since moving, I have received 2 job offers and they were both due to the simple fact that I worked at the Granite Club. This company has provided me with personal and professional growth in ways I could never imagine. I would highly recommend working here.

High profile employer that provides a very enjoyable working experience; a lot of very nice people, friendly and smiling at all times. Situated in a beautiful uptown area. The requirement for excellence reflects in all areas of activity to preserve the prestige and tradition.  Employees must maintain a professional appearance and a perfect demeanor at all times in relation to their both their peers and members.  Privacy and confidentiality are mandatory. Some long hours are required. Decent pay and good benefits. Accessible by TTC, ideally one should drive to work; parking is free for all employees. There is a major concern for health and safety for employees and members alike at all times; everyone is accountable for safe work practices and the control of physical hazards in their areas. Training and orientation sessions are very well organized, thorough, informative and gratifying. All in all, a very desirable place to work in provided that one is a good fit to the culture.

The Granite Club is a private club for the wealthy, so the expectations for you are fairly high. The dress code is quite strict, this includes not having your phone out where any of the members can see you. You get a free meal once a shift which is nice, the food is OK but I don't mind it. Pay is fair and rounded to 15-minute intervals, although you clock in with a fingerprint and use facial recognition to enter the building. There are often discounted tickets to events but they're always the worst seats and it's a lottery to see who will be allowed to buy them.

The atmosphere is very corporate-like, everyone speaks very professionally to each other, kind of like PR speech. I don't remember anyone making even a very light joke while I was there.

Overall it's a good place to work given the decent pay and benefits, as long as you're willing to deal with the atmosphere

 

The Granite Club is a stable place to work if you’re looking for consistent hours, scheduling stability, and employee benefits. The environment can be professional, and there are definitely some hardworking and supportive staff members.

However, the expectations placed on servers are quite high, while the tipping structure does not always feel fair or properly reflective of the workload. One of the downsides is that management tends to let certain lazy or unmotivated employees slide, which can create imbalance within the team and frustration for stronger workers.

Overall, it’s not a bad workplace if your priority is stability and reliable hours. But if you’re a server looking to maximize your income and feel more fairly compensated for your effort and service, there are better opportunities elsewhere.

If you have served in other restaurants, please don’t waste your time here. It’s a “no tipping” environment. Tons of food gets thrown out and we’re not allowed to eat it. Instead we eat poorly cooked food in the employee lounge. 

They will schedule you for any and every hour that you’re available and they’re open for so make sure you give yourself a day off because they won’t. The people that work there are super kind and they make it a lot better. Some employees don’t do anything though. 

Everyone pretty much has to work weekends. Management says, “We care about work life balance!” Yeah, right. Don’t believe everything during the interview.

I used to love coming to work, it was a great place to work. until new management started last year. since then i have never seen more people getting fired and quit. everyone is getting paid the same however if youre a good worker they will suck the life out of you. youre expected to work so much and given nothing in return. benefits are ok, food is nasty downstairs, and people get fired over taking some food home from the left over buffet. also the amount of food waste in this place is absolutely ridiculous. weve been getting so many new people and no one is being trained which means more work for us, management seems disconnected. tey will ask us what needs improvement but nothing ever  changes. still the same...

During my 17 years at the Granite Club I provided child care for children ranging in age from 6 weeks to 5 years, implemented birthday parties, participated in programs and developed strong bonds with many families. I worked with a variety of managers and supervisors and grew in my personal development. I especially enjoyed working closely with my coworkers. There were many different staff who helped me grow in my professional development and I enjoyed working with a diverse group who brought creative programs to the cub. 

Client distribution is extremely unfair, hours are scarce, and there’s no coaching or guidance. Trainers are pressured to constantly “show face” at the club in hopes of getting clients. Some members treat staff with little respect, and there’s no clear path for growth. On top of that, the trainers can be very critical of each other, with jealousy over hours creating a toxic environment among staff. That said, if you’re in management’s good graces, you’ll likely do very well and be given better clients.

This place is full of rude and arrogant snobby people. I'm talking bout both staff and members. Its a unionized place so it protects all the lazy slobs that don't wanna do their job. Their application process is a joke and is more difficult than getting through canadian customs. You gotta do so many reference checks before you can start, I mean all your doing is put okay food on a plate, not fighting a war in iraq. This place is so overrated and it aint even funny. not worth the far bus ride at all.

I have worked at the Granite Club for almost 5 years . The F&B department is amazing. Always new thing going, lot to learn and if you are looking to develop in you career is the place to be. If you put the time and effort it will open many doors for you .  I never felt left alone and the management pushes you to achieve many good things  and to become better at your job. Great training and great stuff support.  I will definitely recommend for young cooks that want's to learn the proper way of been in the industry.
