Great Blue Resorts

While GBR had potential to be an awesome place to work, they constantly miss the mark as an employer. Decisions are made on a whim with policies and procedures changing all the time, with many decisions contributing to make-work projects. Communication has been an issue from all levels of management, if you want to know what's going on you need to seek out information on your own. Seldom are any of the leaders actually given the tools they need to do their jobs. 

The new CEO doesn't have ANY understanding of the hospitality industry and has made it clear he does not care about customers, contractors or employees. Bonuses are restructured or made to be completely unattainable, wages frozen and expectations to perform at same or better level while removing tools, adding arbitrary levels of approval creates responsibility without control. Do more with less. 

There used to be a forward momentum and opportunity for growth but now the company is moving backwards, the reputation is tanking and most managers and executive team are struggling with stress related health issues. There is no culture, no team building, it's survival of the fittest.

When I first started with Great Blue I was transitioning from a culture of a large corporation and was not sure if this was the direction I wanted to take.  Once I received my offer letter I decided to take the leap. I started with Great Blue but I was not confident that this was the right place for me.  The management at that time was not very supportive but very aggressive and the atmosphere was not healthy.
Then things changed!  The executive team restructured.   Very quickly the new team encouraged and supported the team. Together with the Support office we were given a new outlook.  Along with my Regional Director - any assistance I need is just a call away.
I have been with the company for 3 seasons now and I am happy that I made the choice to stay with Great Blue.   The executive team is amazing and they continue to look for new opportunities each day to make the experience for owners and team members more enjoyable!  So thankful for each day that I get to come to work for such an amazing company.  

Great Blue Resorts has so many talented people working for them that are underappreciated and underutilized. It's an absolute shame because if given the opportunity to be heard, many would step forward to help correct mistakes happening from the top down. On the resorts there are so many advantages to being a part of the teams and the company but the directors and management constantly put insurmountable pressure, political stresses and needless work on their already full plates. Rules, dynamics, policies and roles change daily. Many incredible employees have left and many of the good ones who are still there are just waiting for a chance to get out. Locations are beautiful and the pay is great, when you can muster the time and energy to follow up on everything owed to you. Exhausted and depleted talent throughout. Big changes are needed immediately to turn it all around. Extremely high workloads, long days and thankless.

Great Blue Resorts has so many reasons why it could be a truly awesome place to have a career but if the owners of the company choose to neglect the issues that exist with senior management, the most hard working, dedicated and irreplaceable talent will keep walking out that door.  

In the last year we have lost reputable, conscientious and trusted senior team members and leaders including Asset Managers, Sales Advisors, Resort Managers, Senior Maintenance Experts, Senior Accounting Staff and our Chief Operations Officer.

Until the toxicity is addressed and a number of individuals in Senior Management are 'moved along', this once 'great' place to work will continue to see the top industry talent slip through its fingers. 

You can't run a successful business with greedy, self serving, untrusted and quite honesty, lazy directors at the helm.  This is a call for help to the joint CEO's - help make our company GREAT once more!



I love my job..  I love the people I work with and I enjoy coming to work every single day.  I am part of company decisions which I have never experienced before.  The attitude of all our leaders in our business is that of support, growth and opportunity.  In fact, I now have the freedom to pursue exactly the kind of career I want and can take as much training as I want.  We have new online training programs that I can do in my own time, on my schedule  which I am really enjoying.   What I have found so far is, you get what you put it.  The interview process was long but it gave me time to really get to know the kind of business I was getting into and I am happy I have made the choice to be at Great Blue Resorts.. this is my future!

This company has the potential to be a great employer because it has the raw ingredients -an awesome product, some amazing employees and a generous pay and benefits program.  However, there is still a bullying and fear culture within the organization and some of this comes from some of the most senior directors at Great Blue.  The best advice I can give a prospective employee is to speak to the existing resort managers who are out in the field - their names can be found on the company website, and ask them about the organization, if they are happy, if they feel valued.  The biggest negative is that when it comes to bonus time, an overnight rule appears that affect your ability to meet bonus criteria and they pull the rug from under you.  

I love my job and i love going to work. i feel greatly appreciated for the time and effort i put into my job. This is my second year and i plan on working for Great Blue Resorts for as long as i can. Head Office staff are very helpful and supportive when needed. My Team members are great and fun to work with. The General Manager has given me the opportunity to learn and grow and has trusted me with several responsibilites. She has encouraged me when i was hesitant and made me feel confident. I have earned my way from Kids Club Coordinator to Front Desk Manager to now Office Manager with great health benefits. Overall, our resort feels like one big happy family. Its an amazing place to work and anyone that accepts the opportunity to work for Great Blue Resorts will be glad they did.

I was based in their Kawartha Lakes location. Communication from Head Office was very unreliable and policies changed sometimes daily. I felt unsupported, especially the Accountancy Department. I felt that because they didn't really know what we did or how hard and set unreasonable deadlines.  

Good things were working in a beautiful resort and meeting some awesome people and when we were successful, the bonuses were generous.

I wish my former colleagues well for the future. I could no longer stay there because they hired a Head of Sales from England (not sure why when they could have found Canadians) that just spoke to people in a way that was so shocking and we collided many times and I knew that it would not end well if I stayed.

Great Blue Resorts is a career, not a job.  As a young company, we have grown from 3 to 8 resorts over 7 years as a result of hiring GREAT people.

Our culture is such that welcomes open dialogue, an acceptance of diversity and talent.  You truly have an opportunity to grow within the business in the direction you desire and the possibilities are endless! 

Our evolution in continuous. We evaluate, modify and change as we find better ways to improve how we manage the business and deliver excellence to our customers.

Made decent money as salesperson in last year or two and its a fun job to be at a resort meeting cool people but I did not like the culture that the company stood for. Basically when I sold well I got congratulations and good commissions but when I had a tough week I was made to feel stupid and head of sales called me up and basically spoke to me and my colleague like we were children which as a dad myself is kinda embarrassing.  There was not enough hands on support at my resort and we didnt see the head of sales for months at a time and all the training he promised me just didnt happen so when he asked me why i was doing it wrong i said that i wanted training and he said ok, but never followed up.  But if you like working outdoors its a good place to spend summer.
