Great Canadian Dollar Store

The Great Canadian Dollar Store is not a great place to work. A usual day revolves around an often cluttered schedule where you're pricing and putting away items on often over crowded shelves and walls then working on old tills that are not very reliable and require the price of each item to be punched in manually. Closing is often a hassle as one employee must go through all of the overstocked shelves and walls and pick out the items that were misplaced and put them back to where they belong. This task in itself is tedious and must be done before closing the store. If one item is out of place and the boss happens to find it, the punishment is often receiving either a lecture or being yelled at. The distrust is also quite stressful. If you're suspected of stealing, lying, or talking about another employe in a negative way even outside of the workplace the boss will get all of the other employees to 'spy' on you and watch your every movements. Anything from an off gesture to even private facebook statuses could possibly be reported and is often taken way out of context. Most of them are started by simple rumors or misunderstandings and the only way to figure out if you're being 'spied' on is if someone tells you. It's an awful experience. Mopping the store is even worse as the floor is quite large and it is expected to be scrubbed and white. My boss had broken the mop in front of me as she was trying to demonstrate, I often went home with a terrible back that would sometimes cause me to collapse or be unable to move the next morning. Problems with the till would often result in blame being place upon those using it as well. The same night the boss had done the cash out and was missing a receipt to a $50 purchase. Rather then looking for it as it had been found the next day she immediately blamed me for it and took the money out of my paycheck. Even after the receipt was found she never paid me that money. Certain shifts were not planned wisely either. I had been working part time but after working a shift till midnight on a friday for a town wide event she had scheduled me in for two morning shifts even after I had asked for one of those days off. I had also worked a closing shift the day before and she wasn't understaffed in the slightest. Even after asking multiple times to change my shift she wouldn't. My friend who had worked alongside me has also had terrible experiences working there. She had suffered from a concussion trying to place jars on a top shelf while standing on a ladder. They fell on her and she had went to the hospital. When she was released the boss asked for a doctors note and when she gave it to her she stated that it must have been false because of a previous employee forging doctors notes in the past. She had been forced to work a day before she was deemed well enough to work. Other employees were pulled to the back and yelled at for simple things such as smoking on their breaks or making a simple pricing mistake. For less then minimum wage this job is not worth it. The only good thing about this job is that they'll hire you despite what you look like or how much experience you have. Most of the staff isn't too bad, but it's often changing constantly and no one really stays for too long. But I'll save you the trouble, don't work here.

Starting a new job often brings excitement and the hope of positive experiences with both colleagues and customers. However, not all work environments foster support and respect, as demonstrated by the challenging situation faced by me at the Great Canadian Dollar Store in Bridgewater. This narrative explores the complexities of workplace tension, the impact of unresolved conflict, and the responsibilities of management in maintaining a healthy work environment.


Initially enjoying the job and building rapport with co-workers and customers alike, I became known for my distinctive colorful hair and positive attitude. However, just two months into employment, one co-worker began displaying unprovoked hostility. The behavior, ranging from curt responses to hostile looks, created an uncomfortable atmosphere that gradually eroded my sense of safety and belonging.

Despite consistently treating the difficult co-worker with kindness and respect, the mistreatment persisted, prompting me to report the situation to the manager. Unfortunately, the manager’s response was passive, limited to taking notes without implementing meaningful intervention. This lack of action allowed the negative behavior to resurface, undermining workplace harmony.

The situation escalated when the hostile co-worker interrupted my customer service to an elderly customer struggling with her debit card. Not only did the co-worker push her way forward to my cash register, but she also rudely dismissed my assistance, treating the customer disrespectfully. Such behavior tarnishes the store's reputation and raises ethical concerns about customer care and employee conduct.

Repeated complaints about the co-worker’s conduct resulted in minimal managerial action. Attempts to separate me and my antagonist on the schedule were made unilaterally by the manager, without consulting me, fostering feelings of isolation and disempowerment. The manager’s dismissive attitude, marked by refusing dialogue and ignoring my perspective, exemplifies poor leadership and a failure to address workplace bullying effectively.

The culmination of these events was a confrontational meeting where I was faced with an unfounded written warning and demeaning treatment by the manager. This toxic culmination, combined with perceived favoritism and lack of support, ultimately led me to resign, marking this as one of the worst professional experiences I had ever had.

This account highlights the crucial role of management in proactively addressing interpersonal conflicts and protecting employees from bullying. Fair treatment, open communication, and timely intervention are essential for fostering a respectful workplace where all employees feel valued. When these elements are absent, not only is employee morale damaged, but the quality of customer service suffers as well.

In any work environment, enduring hostility without support can be draining and demoralizing. This story serves as a reminder that workplaces must cultivate cultures of respect and responsiveness to ensure that no employee feels unheard or unprotected against mistreatment.

My time at the Dollar store was the best expirence ever. I was hired as Key holder. I opened / closed store. I would do Merchanising from scratch. Did window displays. I would run cash and within a year I was Asst. Store Manager. I would handle all store duties from doing Bank deposits to Ordering product to handleing co-workers concerns and schedules.

I learned about markups as well as ordering.

My manager was great to work for. he listened to my ideas and concerns.

And my co-workers were helpful. In a management position I had a good working relationship with my co-workers

The hardest part of this job was not taking it home. I found I would be thinking of work related ideas or concerns to address the next day.

The best part???   was the feeling of satisfaction at the end of the day that some how I made a difference to my customers that day

Even though each day started out with the same job requirements it would always end up with new experiences..the staff, the customers, the sales reps, head office would add to the diversity of the workday. It was not always good but it would be a learning experience, this is what I would love..being abe to figure out how to deal with new dilemas I loved my staff, the owner of the franchise, the territory manager, and head office. This company was the best to work for..I just wish the locations didn't have to close

typical day at work. ringing customers stuff in, or stalking the shelves with our products. I leaned to do math quicker and how to work with different customers. management was how it should be.....we could talk like friends but when it came down to it she/he was our boss and we knew it. Coworkers were the same some of them had a higher authority when the boss wasn't in, only to make sure work got done but no one ever acted better than the other. Hardest part of the job was unloading trucks trying to find enough room for the products in the back room also some boxes were quite heavy. my favourite part was working with different customers all the time

When I had my interview, both said that I was the perfect candidate for advancement to supervisor, even Management level. That drew me in. But once the job started, I was placed to a single job while others around me were getting higher up and learning more then me. I felt as if I was there because they needed a certain amount of people and used false hope to get me to stay. Overall, my co workers were fantastic and the hours were great but in the end, I want to move up in the business world, not stay in one place with false hope.

What I loved about working here was the trust I was dealt with like merchandising taking orders from delivery, pricing, restocking shelves with the merchandise.
As well as walking customers through to what they needed and also had a chance to convince them to purchase something new in store.
Getting to know the coworkers and bonding made the job that much more entertaining and fulfilling.

Your everyday duties at The Great Canadian Dollar Store included, handling the cash register, doing up balloon orders, putting stock away, filling the shelves. I learned that customer service goes a long way. Management for the most part was really great. They worked with you to give you the time off that you needed. The co-workers, lets put it this way... it was never a dull moment. The hardest part of the job was balancing the dollar store half and the sears outlet at the back of the store when you were the only person there. The most enjoyable part of the job, was making balloon bouquets.

I can't give out too much info but they SUCK as employers. Very shady head boss and horrible work environment. You have to come in 15 minutes before and after your shift and they don't pay you properly for the time you spend at work. Very shady and toxic place. The only plus is for young kids who don't have work experience -- this place will hire you. They have such a high turnover rate that they can't afford to be picky. But be prepared to do much more than what a minimum wage worker should have to.  

Started my day at work at 8:30.  Opened the store and set up cashes for workers.  Took and received orders , priced merchandise and put on the floor.  Managed the workers breaks and lunches and relieved them when needed.   I enjoyed this job as it gave me many opportunities to do different jobs and interact with the public .  I balanced the tills in the evening and did bank deposits.   I loved working for this store as my boss was such a great person and friend.
