In todays society it is difficult to find a company that not only wants their staff working in house but also wants to reward them for a job well done.  

I am privileged to work for a company like this.  I work with so many friends and family every day.  Although we work hard by putting in an honest day’s work, we also share many laughs and common goals. We go hard and we go home.  And when I say we go home, we can actually go home and not worry about work or have to bring it home with us to finish the job.  We go home and we get to leave work until we return the next day.

Working at Gregg Distributors LP I have been rewarded with trips.  Two to Las Vegas for dinner, shows and a shopping spree funded by the company, and one trip to Toronto for a tour of the Blue Jays baseball field and behind the scenes of the facility, a Toronto Raptors basketball game, along with multiple sights, sounds and flavours of the finest dining.  The icing on that Toronto cake – attendance to Canada’s Best Managed Companies gala. (Did I mention that Alan Doyle of Great Big Sea performed at this event – dream come true to see him live.)  

So pretty amazing right?  Have I mentioned the bonuses you get at Gregg Distributors LP.  We receive quarterly bonuses based on performance, bonus personal days (the last two years alone I have been rewarded 2 weeks holidays per year based on performance and attitude at work).  Recently the staff have been awarded a new bonus, personally sponsored by the company president.  How many presidents personally fund a bonus program for their staff and share their financial growth with their staff?

This all sounds pretty good, right?  Let me tell you about the first class Christmas party that is put on by the company.  For so many companies that don’t want anything to do with Christmas parties and celebrating with their staff, Gregg Distributors LP puts on two nights event for the Edmonton and area staff plus Christmas parties for all other locations across three different provinces.  Over 1000 staff members and their spouse are invited to enjoy good food, good company and a night full of dancing and celebrating with friends, oh and a Christmas bonus. Nothing beats dancing all night with the company president and executive vice president.  

Actually something does.  The kids Christmas party, with inflatable bouncy castles, a petting zoo, games of skill, snacks, balloon animals oh and Santa handing out presents to every kid in attendance.  (If you ask me this party is far more fun then dancing all night with adults.  I truly look more forward to the kids party every year than the adult party).

After 19 years with the company I still have so much fun going to work everyday.  I come home every day feeling appreciated and fulfilled for completing another productive, exciting day at Gregg Distributors LP.


I've had almost a decade in the industry and Gregg's is by far the best place I've been so far. They might be considered "micro-managed" but it is completely necessary for a business of their size that prides itself on being 100% Canadian. If they weren't so well-managed half of our jobs, if not more, would be outsourced to cheaper countries. 

They believe in "going hard and going home." You're there from 8-5 to work. Then at 5PM clock out and go home, go have fun, spend time with your family, whatever you want to do. But while you are there you're expected to work and that means you do have to follow some company policies that aren't very common. No, you're not allowed to drink coffee at your desk. No, you can't use your cell phone in specific areas. Does this sound crazy? Yes. However, in my opinion, and after coming from work places with very little structure or company policies I am extremely grateful for their level of equality that stretches literally between all departments. That means tip top management is following the same policies as the order pickers, and admin staff, the mechanics and janitorial staff. Everyone has to abide by the same rules. That means no ones getting special treatment. If you're used to getting your way and if you like taking advantage of your job and, in the end, creating more work for others then this is not the place for you.

Gregg's also has an impeccable system in place where each employee's day is filled up with a perfect amount tasks and duties so that you're simultaneously not bored (because you are constantly working when you're not on one of your 3 breaks that you're given) but you are also granted that satisfaction of being able to complete all of your tasks by the end of the day. In less well managed companies I have worked for I've experienced the pains of staying until 5:30/6 pm, or even coming in on weekends, to ensure everything that needs to be done is. Usually that is due to others slacking or management's misconception of how much one person can actually accomplish in a day.

They also have an incredible bonus structure and second-to-none holiday pay and sick days that they grant each employee. No, you don't have to be here for 5+ years to get 3 weeks vacation. Yes, if you're sick you can actually stay home and get paid for it knowing its not affecting your precious vacation time.

Honestly, I have nothing negative to say about this place and for all those complaining about the policies in place and saying it's mismanaged either don't like being held accountable for their own workload or can't handle the thought of conforming to something that's bigger than yourself.

Gregg Distributors is a ....unique.... place of employment. Very, very tightly controlled in every aspect, employee and time management, company policies, pricing breaks for customers, ect. Corporate culture and propaganda is pushed to an extreme, and you had better buy into it (and don't dare question it) if you hope to be here long-term. Company seems to perpetually stuck in the 1990's. Had a recent upgrade in their system that at least brought them out of the 1980's, still far behind where they could be. Change only happens if it is approved by the mothership in Edmonton.

Advertised as one of Canada's Best Managed Companies. They do go a long way in managing their antique systems and meeting the demands of customers. Customer service is strongly advocated for and upheld at almost all costs. However, Gregg Distributors isn't rated as one of Canada's Top Employers for a reason.....

Employee turn-over is staggeringly high, to the point where people have remarked that it isn't worth learning a new person's name until they have been there for at least a couple months. Co-workers are pretty good, a couple individuals that should be let go are kept due to them being "friendly" with management. Strong feeling of distrust between management and employees (drivers and outside sales are tracked continuously via GPS, ect), which makes the working environment uneasy at best. Couple this with aggressive micro-managing, overkill on policies, forms, and regulations that are implemented for little reason, and you have the culture that is Gregg Distributors. 

Starting salary is above market average. Work your way up and take on more tasks inside? Don't bother asking for a raise. Gregg's claims to give a raise twice a year, but it is a measure that matches inflation, not an actual raise worth anything. Only real way to get better pay is to work yourself into the ground (with no thanks or appreciation given) and hope that your quarterly production bonus is decent, which is also subject to how management feels about you. Little room for growth and advancement through the company. Benefits are typical for the industry. There is an investment program you can buy into with good returns, but only by invitation.

In all, don't work here. Unless you're a masochist. Or desperate. And even then, don't.

OK... Here's the skinny on Gregg's. 

Gregg's Pay
"You get what you pay for!" Gregg's pays very well. But if you think you can put in 70% effort and get 110% pay you are gravely mistaken. Be ready to earn every penny.

Workload
Gregg's is run very differently than you're typical warehouses out there. Some warehouses I have been in have an ebb and flow. When it's busy you work, when it's not, you have a chat. This is not how Gregg's works. There is no scenario of not being busy. There are always customers, incoming phone calls, orders to pick, and many other things to do. If you like a busy environment... this is the place for you. I have met many people who think that they can come into Gregg's and just slack. They don't last.

Philosophy
Gregg's is run very similar to military. There is a Hierarchy and it is to be followed. There is room for individuality as well but that is ALWAYS accompanied with a very strong work ethic. Don't expect to move up the chain or expect a lot of respect if you are lax daisy. It will not take long to see that there are many people that are running circles around you, staying longer than you, and more invested than you. This can change over time, but don't expect that to change until you've proven your self.

Your Brain
The knowledge that you will acquire in this company will be HUGE!!! Both position and product knowledge are delivered at a pace that you need to be ready for. Be ready to absorb!!

Personal Summary
I spent 4 years with Gregg's and do not regret any of it. It took me, personally, a long time to understand that this is not the speed for me. I am older and ready to start winding down. I learned a lot from the vast wealth of knowledge that the company, products, and the staff have provided me. I have built many great relationships and hope to keep them for a long time. I am very thank-full for all that I have received from Gregg's, but it's time for me to move on. 

I would definitely recommend Gregg's to anyone. Like any task you take on, do your research and understand if it's the right fit for you.

What is the best part of working at the company?
Gregg’s offers a chance at investing within the company’s Mutual Fund Trust after a year of employment. The return is matched by Gregg’s, up to a 33% return per year.

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
Gregg’s is a tight ship. Expect to have eyes and ears everywhere watching you within your 3 month probation period. Talking to your coworkers within the warehouse can get you fired without cause.

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
The work environment at Gregg’s is awesome. The culture is hard to adapt to for the average person, keep your head down and stay focused on the job and you will succeed.

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
You start off within your 3 month probation period by picking orders in the warehouse at Edmonton Main Location. You have the option to request a specific job title at Gregg’s, but this only applies once you pass the 3 month probation period.
This place is huge on being “low maintenance”. They watch you like a hawk, down to the minute and second of you being on time for work, and back on the floor after lunch and coffee breaks. If you’re late by a minute and 30 seconds, you will need to fill out a personal lost time form to the CEO at his desk. If you need to leave early due to any reason, you will need to speak to the CEO at his desk.
The CEO is a person who is quick to anger, and is not considerate of family life outside of work.
He has staff members who will have you fired without cause if you don’t get along with them.
The pay is the only factor which makes working at Gregg’s worth it.

When I first started everyone seemed friendly, helpful. After the first week things seemed to change, your discouraged to ask questions, because then you are not considered a low maintenance employee. You get a blue card for EVERY mistake you make even if it is a missed letter. If you have a customer order and it's your break time, too bad you can't leave it or finish it after your break because you can't make up your break that you missed. It goes same for you unpaid lunch break, if you work 15 minutes into your lunch then you only take the 15 minutes that's left, the whole warehouse has only 2 bathrooms one upstairs and one downstairs with 2 stalls, you can't use the ones upstairs if the downstairs ones in use. You have to fill out a form for EVERYTHING, And If you ask a question you are made to feel stupid. And don't let me start with school, you better write everything down because if you get asked a questions and you don't have the answer to it you are belittled in front of everyone how disappointing it is that you didn't have an answer. You walk so much picking orders that when you get home good luck wanting to even move. It was nice to work the 8-5 shifts and weekends off but you are so tired mentally and physically that it just wasn't worth the money. Paying good salaries is great but no money in the world is worth being treated like that. During my under 3 months there I've seen so many people get hired and never come back, there's a couple that lasted a couple hours and didn't make it back after their break. So take what you want from this and if you get hired there good luck to you 😊

I believe that Gregg Distributors LP faced significant management and culture-related issues. Even though I made an attempt to work hard and honestly, I frequently felt that the atmosphere was unsupportive and that issues or mistakes were not dealt with fairly or constructively.

One of the weakest aspects, in my opinion, was management's communication. I personally felt pressured or blamed in situations where I thought I deserved support and understanding, rather than fostering an environment where employees could freely discuss problems. I felt demoralized and underappreciated as a result.

One of the things that struck me was the inconsistency and fairness in the problem solving process. It felt as if the organization sometimes had a greater emphasis on blaming others or figuring out who to blame. This was frustrating and a negative experience for me. 

I think Gregg Distributors LP would be in a better position if it communicated better with employees, set a standard for being fair with employees, and were an environment that was safe for employees to voice concerns without any measure of unfairness.

Overall, I would best characterize the workplace, based on my own experience, as not supportive and demanding and would suggest that each person thinking about taking a job here should think about whether the environment fits their needs.
