This company's people are underhanded manipulative scum! They act nice in order to sucker you, so they can get away with violating your employment rights. Maybe that's their hook? They're so called "business plan."

Okay, first off you're "supposed to," that's right! "Supposed to!" Arrive 15 minutes early, unpaid, for every shift. For what they call a briefing period. This is Canada. They have no right to ask this of you. I was personally rebuked for coming six minutes early. I have necessary proof in emails asking for staff to come 15 minutes early.

Another thing is, they don't pay for your uniform costs associated with cleaning.

They don't provide wage statements or pay stubs automatically for each and every pay period. You have to request them from your supervisor. Each time and for each pay cheque.

I was offered a position two months in advance. When I contacted my supervisor about it, I was told it was given to someone else. I was given the cold shoulder because I was unpopular with a fellow co-worker who I caught sleeping. I confided this to a senior employee who told that employee about it. As a result, the employee who I caught sleeping became opposed to me and had an influence in deciding my return to that site. I wasn't given any other shifts either after countless attempts and times by email and text messages. The supervisor couldn't broker anything on my behalf. Why would anyone want to work for a company that rejects you? I gladly resigned of course.

Don't let this company fool you. It isn't all what it's cracked up to be. It's important that a company acts ethically. Just like what it expects of its employees. This company does not treat its employees fairly. Their best interests come first. They won't come through for you. They're two-faced and unprofessional. Way to retain talent! Not cool at all!

Whenever you make any correspondence with this company, have it in writing. Never take their word when it comes to anything.

Please note this company could be so much better but they are looking for security professionals and paying low end wages to people who often can't write or speak English with any skill. From the top down, this company management does not value skilled professionals who do the work. What they want are warm bodies to fill spaces and not actually think. So you have unmotivated and underpaid unskilled employees who aren't experienced in a job that they would rather not be doing. Sounds promising right? When this company has a very high turnover rate, you know there are a lot of errors being made by management at all levels. I got out of this company as soon as I realized that the work I was doing was not being recognized, renumerated for and that they weren't hiring suitable guards. Clients of this company should really delve deep into what they are actually getting for their money. The company culture is questionable and I would suggest that workers unfortunate enough to be employed check their pay every single cheque. As well, have all company directives and promises in writing as this will be beneficial when management wants to maneuver into changing the terms of anything. Be very careful in all your dealings with this company, as management has legal representation on speed dial for all occasions and they know all the loopholes. Management works very hard at creating an illusion and if you ever stand up to them have all your documentation copied because they are in it to win it.

Gaurdteck was one of the worst security companies I have ever worked for. The pay is below industry standard, with extremely subbar benefits. There is a huge disconnect from upper management/HQ and the on-site management, which a large gap in communication and procedures. The entire company felt very disorganized and unprofessional. It was always impossible to get a hold of HR, and they took weeks to sort out your pay, after THEY made mistakes. The on-site supervisor was great, but you could tell he was always behind, and unorganized because of HQ's mess-ups. 

If you save a life on the job, their idea of a reward is a $10 giftcard. You just made the company look extremely amazing and they do is give you the smallest pat on the back possible. A job puts you in a harm's way, and the company couldn't care less or even try and have your back. All they care is about their profit margins and not their employees. I saw countless of good coworkers leave, leaving behind only people who needed a paycheck. It's all right experience, if you have no prior job experience, but if you have any security knowledge at all I would highly recommend you avoid this company.  I had much better experiences and pay at other companies. The only thing guardteck does right is their uniform. Which says a lot.



Let me start with the silver lining: 

The interviewer (who occasionally gives HR support as well), other department staff (especially the Security Guards) and the direct lead are incredible to work with. Actually, they make the place and the job a little bit easier.

However, they are not always there and the the day-to-day support from the higher-ups is lacking, especially when you have to deal with problems and issues that occur almost every time. 

In other words, the higher-ups want you to receive orders without questioning (even when directly impacts your job duties) and/or without any kind of support (like a previous preparation of inventory for specific occasions) or even without beforehand instructions to give you time to prepare. Whichever they decide, you have to abide. 

Also, the wage is not competitive according to the market. Actually, it is below average for the function and quantity of activities that you perform. 

Therefore, as much as both this company and this job have their good side, the previously mentioned problems mentioned overshadow - and quite frankly, outnumber - the already few qualities. 
It is a good place to start and get some experience, but as long as the higher ups make the decisions the way they make, in my point of view, it is not a good place to stay for a long time. 

This company provides security for everything from corporate buildings to EDM festivals so there is such a variety of opportunities. In one year I worked fulltime at a mall, but then worked part-time for them also at concerts and music festivals. The pay was more than my other security jobs but not as much as it should be considering how much crazy stuff we have to deal with. The experience is great for my resume though which is key for me as I am working on a career in law enforcement.  This company lets you apply for work in other sections of the company (like mobile patrol, out of town events, bodyguard work) and I can work for them part-time when I am in school so it has been great for my needs.

This company is the most disorganized and most incompetent company I have ever been a part of. Every paycheck I received always had some kind of mistake and they ripped me off on my first cheque (still fighting to get the pay difference). You constantly have to harass payroll and management to get it fixed. 

Management does not care about your health or well being and they threaten to suspend or fire you if you are legitimately sick. At the end of the day, Guardteck is just another low grade security company that only cares about profits and not security guards. I cannot wait to find a new job and leave this joke of a company.

Given the nature of the security industry, there are many highly rewarding positions that are invaluable for accruing job experience. Unfortunately, there are also many soul-sucking positions that provide little personal development and can be even worse depending on which company oversees your role. Thankfully, in this role, numerous opportunities helped me improve my skills and enjoy the people I worked with. This was very situationally dependent though, as many other guards in more static roles were more likely to express dissatisfaction. Overall I enjoyed working for this company greatly, and despite some issues, I'm glad I did it. If I could change one thing it'd be the expediency and efficiency in which important issues were addressed.

A typical day of work consisted of constant patrol and static patrols at mall entrances. Mostly dealing with disgruntled customers and pan-handlers and EDP's. I learnt a lot about how to deescalate situations properly and professionally. My co workers at Guardteck were like a family to me. Everyone got along in the workplace, no issues whatsoever. The hardest part of the job was the long hours I sometimes had to work, other than that it was an excellent workplace. The most enjoyable part of the job was making sure everything was secure and enjoying the job.

As my first security job, I was blown away by mix of firmness, warmth and sincerity of my superiors.  Leadership was qualified, professional and always went the extra mile. I had flexible shifts and opportunities for overtime which is all I could ask for. The only downside being the company model is increasingly becoming outdated. The company made most of its growth providing security for events, rather than permanent sites. As a consequence, pay periods, wages and amenities seem to be slightly behind. This of course will be corrected as the company continues to grow and transitions to providing more sedentary security.
