I've worked at GMG for 8 months. I've worked on the same machine for 2 of those. A Machine which is renowned for being one of the worst jobs to do because it's always breaking down and the broaches are usually dull, causing burrs. You have to buff the burrs off every broach if they are dull because they have a rule that they aren't allowed to change a broach unless it has 20,000 hits. Which can lead to buffing every part for your whole shift instead of changing the broach, to 'save money'. 
The inequality between shifts is huge. Day shift gets whatever they want, afternoon shift is the 'baby' shift and are lazy, and night shift gets blamed for not fixing everything for the other two shifts. 
Recently hired a new plant manager. Has changed nothing for the better. People used to stay at the plant because at least the rules were lax. That is no longer the case and people are throwing their resumes to the wind to get out.
Coworkers are nice, but some of them don't speak English which makes it difficult to communicate needs. Managers don't seem to care about individuals and only care about production. There are so few maintenance personnel that things don't get fixed, or because the company is too cheap to buy replacement parts, it gets bandaided to work until the next shift so it's 'their problem'. If your machine goes down, prepare to be a ping-pong ball because the machine you will get switched to is probably broken too. 
Morale is low. No one wants to go to work and everyone is eager to leave, often leaving their clean-up for the next shift.

The job consisted of loading parts into a machine and letting an automatic robot weld the parts together, and when the part comes out you check the welds. It get really boring fast, and it's easy to mess up because they don't train you enough. The machine will break down often, and you are left waiting there until it is fixed. My lead hand just told me to "look" busy, but there is nothing much to do so I just swept the floor for 20 minutes between breaks. Many people seem unhappy there, they are always on edge and scared they might get fired which is really bad for work. Instead of focusing on quality production, people are worried about not having the machine break down so the supervisor doesn't get mad. The paperwork is ridiculous, no one seems to understand it, but it takes a long time to do and most of it is repeating writing the same things on several pages like the date, time and job number. The worse part was my lead hand who refused to fix anything. He would just tighten the screens to broken clamps, and then it would come loose again in am hour. They expect you to make a ton of production, but don't train people or fix the machines to make consistent work. The coworkers are nice people, but then you realize most all of them are stuck working there because they are too old to work anywhere else. I stayed for a month because they refused to train me and they made me do the same thing everyday.

the relationships i established with (some) fellow workers were worthwhile. then there are the other individuals that would throw you under the bus for the most trivial and petty reason.

the company does not want to keep up with current technology. they're a 'manufacturing' company that should have stayed a press shop.

if they can save a nickel they will. doesn't matter if they spend a dollar to do it. for example, it's far cheaper to promote someone from within the company to a position they're unqualified for, than to hire a qualified person from outside.

around the time qualified workers were being let go, while the mediocre (and worse, and probably lower paid) employees stayed. 
it's like they were throwing out the wheat and keeping the chaff. 
it made me wonder why i was still there. did i suck at my job? or had they just not gotten around to me?

it wasn't all bad. like i mentioned, i had some good relationships, and i did learn a lot. overall though, i would not recommend working there.

Guelph Manufacturing is a family run company, who treats their employees like family. As a payroll administrator with the company I have seen first hand their commitment to their employees. Unfortunately, I have to leave as I accepted a position much closer to home.  However, if I lived closer, I think I would retire from this company.  They value my opinion and let me take the lead in my position to make it my own.  They have trusted me to make process improvements and gave the guidance and collaboration needed. My manager is patient and easy to talk to and always willing to help when I am overwhelmed. Although, my interaction with the owners has been limited, they have always been kind and professional.  They have multiple employees that have been with company 20+ years, to me that speaks volumes to how they treat people here. The HR department has an open door policy that allows employees in shops the ability to visit with HR and discuss any issues they have in person, or just stop by to say "hi".

The work here is straight-forward but also lacking. Most of the job is done by robots, and it was my job to make sure the machine is running and producing parts. I also packed the parts into large bins. Management is tolerable, they seem to be concerned about keeping workplace drama to a minimum. But it was the people that work here that made me quit. A lot of self entitled bullies who take advantage of the company and take 15 minute breaks every hour. Some of the older folks act like high schoolers because the gossip that goes on here is rampant, and the micro aggressive racism happens everyday. It's not worth my time to go to HR about this, so I left. There are people here that hardly do any work, and all they do is gossip and spread false rumors about people that actually want to work. Management needs to investigate and put a stop to these bad apples because no one wants to work because of them. 

GMG is a good place to start if you're young and ambitious. Plenty of rope to learn and a lot of very experienced people to bounce ideas off of and help you course correct if you are headed in the wrong direction.

Vertical mobility and compensation are not a strong suite so as soon as you feel like you know what's going on from a professional point of view, it is best to find something else that is a fair return on your labor. The only way to make them give you a raise is if you hold a gun to their head, metaphorically, by waving a higher competing offer in their face. Even then, it is about how hard your manager is willing to fight for you to get you that raise. 

Eventually, the best thing for everyone is if you move on as this will allow you to grow while giving management the opportunity to fill your position with another newcomer.

What is the best part of working at the company?
There aren't many good things about working there, I never felt secure. It's really gross in there. If you're a hard worker like me, you don't like seeing everyone sitting around on their phones while you very paid the same account to work your butt off.

My supervisor was very mean, and rude, and was impossible to make happy. She made it very hard to work there. She had her favorite people, but treated the rest very badly

Culture is very diverse.  It's a very stressful environment 

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
I started 15 mins early every day to clean up the mess that first shift left, and came in from lunch break 10 mins early everyday to make boxes because of we didn't have a certain account of parts at the end of the day, the lady that ran the line wouldn't let us stop.

My day at Guelph Tool Inc. would start out with having to retrieve my job card and all paper work required to start my job. Then go to job and would have to do safety requirements at the cell to start the job. Would do hourly check paperwork to make sure parts are what they are suppose to be look for any mistakes in parts. Most days were quite successful.
I learned alot of useful information well assembling parts on the robot welders and spot welders. I think what I learned will be useful at another company forsure.
Management was for the most part great but sometimes they would not take into consideration what some of your complaints were.
The day went pretty well wasn`t to many hard parts at all.
I enjoyed working with the people and learning new things.

This company will take advantage of you financially and mentally. Half the people that work here are on drugs. And I am ok with using marijuana but please keep it out of the workplace especially when handling dangerous machines.  Second, they treat the operators like slaves. Many times the machines break down and the boss will think the operators did something wrong when really the machines are just faulty. When you call someone over for help, they will take a long time and be in a bad mood. Then the boss becomes angry when you don't meet the quota. Days are always the same with no change or improvement. Even after the covid-2 layoff, the conditions are worse as demand is higher and the weather it hot. I left because I was being treated like dirt.
