Typical work day: Run ERP system for purchasing needs, many time sensitive vendors so establishing a priority list/schedule is a requirement, ERP is poorly implemented and desperately needs overhaul, Many manual processes are required to complete basic tasks, Simple things like vendor contacts are out of date and not maintained so even something as simple as sending a PO  is difficult. 

Poor communication and constant directional change adds a lot of confusion to day to day operations which frequently results in interdepartmental conflicts.

Previous experience in supply chain management is a detrement, What is actually required for these roles is an entry level or co-op level work expierence in this field because the buisnesses practises are not the industry normal and they are not working towards any kind of cohesion that would resemble what you would find elsewhere and really offers no transferable skills or knowledge outside of the company.

The buisness model is essentially a retail franchise model but without standardization and no working knowledge of supply chain management best practices at the branch level, Most decisions are driven by profitability and not about product availability or any real analysis.

Management is fine, A mix of good and bad which is normal and most are knowledgeable about the sales and business aspects but have a complete lack of understanding with regard to the current ERP system thier using and there is a severe communication disconnect between corporate management and branch management on overall direction.

Overall not a bad place to start a career in purchasing just be prepared to adapt to an unusual environment and understand that what your adapting too will likely contradict prior knowledge and best practices you may know or have been taught.

I worked as a Warehouse Lead Hand at Guillevin’s Edmonton South branch, and my experience was overwhelmingly negative due to poor management and a lack of support. From the start, I was tasked with reducing warehouse errors and improving organization, but management offered no backing to implement necessary changes. The Operations Manager, who oversees the role, lacked follow-through and was largely disengaged, often passing her responsibilities onto others and deflecting blame. Promised flexibility in start times and overtime pay never materialized, with staff expected to work extra hours without compensation.

The Branch Manager’s leadership style was rooted in finger-pointing rather than problem-solving. Instead of addressing issues through support and training, there was a focus on punishment, creating a high-stress environment. Any attempts at positive change were met with resistance from both staff and management, who were more concerned with protecting their own interests than fostering improvement.

Ultimately, the Warehouse Lead Hand position became a scapegoat for any warehouse issues, with little opportunity to make a meaningful impact. If you’re looking for a supportive, well-managed workplace, I would strongly advise looking elsewhere.

Unfortunately, Guillevin turned into an ego-driven, favoritism-based and toxic culture upon the changeover of branch management. 
The manager is not qualified to run a branch, he's a salesman, and not the most prolific either. Focus is on the sales team, with the perks, and pay increases, commission etc that entails, however, if you're in any other department, you're either forgotten, or using old equipment, no raises, no time given by management or feedback etc. 
Bonuses were given to new hires, and the people that were there for the year that worked for the bonus (which they depend on) got 1/10th of what they have gotten each year previous - due to the hiring spree new manager went on hiring for his ego, not for the work everyone from warehouse to administration to counter staff put in. 
It's too bad, there have been 8 people that have quit due to this new manager and toxic culture in the last 1.3 years - and still no changes in that. 
I left before that ship went down, but honestly, the corporate culture is no different, run out of Montreal. They have no idea what the right hand and left hand are doing. 
Don't waste your time with their promises - it's just to get you in before they tank you too.

I worked at this company for a year and a half. It started out great but when my manager and I started disagreeing on things, it was very tense. I had an issue that there was drinking in the office and my manager lied to me about going to school. (I wanted to, he said that there wasn't any reason for the company to pay for that). In turn,  there was no room for advancement. 

My manager didn't speak to me for a week after confronting him about these issues with the VP. The first time he had a real conversation with me after that, it was to fire me. He said that "there were emails" that were offside, but didn't give me any more information as to why I was being let go. 

My manager also said that each profit center's goal was profits, so spending money on safety requirements wasn't something he was interested in. In turn, our warehouse safety requirements are next to none. 

Terrible management in the Calgary branches. He works for himself and the money, not the people or the branch.

The salary is based on profit sharing, at each branch there is 2 payouts a year. 1st based off the amount of profit on sales during the year 2nd is kick back from suppliers the more you purchase from the companies you get something like 2% back, but I noticed lately that the head branch where upper management works, has been ordering all the stuff from suppliers so they get the 2% and then transferring the inventory to the branchs where we have to pay shipping that's comes out of our branchs profit. Where the companies we purchase from offers free shipping. It adds up quick / on another note they fired almost everyone because apparently we are over staffed, now I hate my life because I'm so behind and the customers are angry. doing the work of 6 people. Need new upper management 


It may vary by location with regards to work culture and management since they are profit centres My experience was not good, and created a negative environment. Most customers were referred to inappropriately and insultingly by the manager as soon as they walked out the door.  Their computer system and sales process is just not set up to serve for counter sales. Any previous Point of sale experience is irrelevant.  It’s a warehouse/wholesale system and is time consuming, and can be complex. A simple order or return that should take a few seconds takes at least 5 minutes. You basically need to be an electrician or have an extensive electrical background to work there and be able to meaningfully help customers. 

A day to day basis of working at Guillevin was interacting with customers, filling and shipping orders, and receiving product. The staff were incredibly friendly and exceptionally kind towards the customers and other co- workers. It was a positive atmosphere upon entering the building every day. I was able to broaden my knowledge on the different electrical components as many of the staff were experienced with them. The hardest part while working was the stress of keeping up with orders to ensure they make it out the same day. Management was very professional and encouraged all employees to have a say towards any subject. Overall it was a good job to have coming out of high school.

The Company encouraged entrepreneurial behaviour , and rewarded employees for performance based results .

Leading and Managing employees by example is the hardest part

Excellent work environment . Culture shared was one of teamwork  and hard work to take care of value customer base 

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
Always varied as I worked with other Managers , sales , admin , operations as well as key vendors

Every day is like my first day at work where I get to learn new things and meet new people. Management has been fine so far and when it comes to co-workers, it is just fantastic. They guide me and help me where ever they can. The hardest part of job is that it is limited to Calgary. I am looking for a job where i can travel and experience more about our industry and hence learn more. The most enjoyable part of the job is to meet new people everyday from different cultures and ethnicities.

Worked at two locations in Ontario. Actually a great company to work for. Corporately they really do have the employees best interests in mind. Great Benefits, generous salary, excellent promotions and communication. Opportunity's to advance and opportunities to explore other locations. I made the mistake of leaving and discovered that other companies do not care or cultivate such an excellent environment for their employees. I may be the only person to have ever left Guillevin.
