HAZELTON PLACE RETIREMENT RESIDENCE

I've been working as a server on and off over the past 4 years at various bars & restaurants within Toronto and this place, no doubt in my mind was the worst place ever. First off, the management is rude, the 2 original dining room managers that hired me weren't very accommodating when it came to service & requests and I was let go after working about a week or so. 

They do hold meetings often, but it lasts about 5 minutes or so before they let you go. Also the menu here changes on a daily basis and its sometimes hard to keep up with the daily changes (however the a la carte menu stays the same). In terms of the residents, based on my time working there about 90% of them were nice, some of them can get cranky at times and some have dietary restrictions. Most residents are within the 70-80 year range (some even in there 90's).

This job can get stressful at times especially during the lunch rush hour but it goes by pretty quick. Overall, wouldn't recommend working here as the management is poor and they don't treat their employees fairly. I was terminated within a week of working and I was still learning the menu and was on a probation period.

Unless you really have to, I would advise you to steer clear of this place, there's a very high chance you will be fired before the 90 day probationary period ends (especially being a server).

I can't even begin to say how terrible this place is to work in.. where do I start off ?! firstly the management has to be †he worst I've ever seen, they are cliquey, rude, do not care about you at all if you are not flashing some expensive outfits or killing yourself at work. they 110% favour people at this position, if you are new here they will give you a hard time and most likely talk bad about you behind your back, I felt very disrespected here its honestly sad. the salary is average, you could work in a better environment and probably get paid around the same or even more. 90% of the residents are nice and that was the only good thing here. I mean I'm absolutely stunned at how this place is run, from the outside you'd think its a wealthy well kept retirement home, only to find out there is a toxic work place environment here that is honestly frightening and concerning! please if you are thinking about getting a job here look at all the bad reviews as those are the most up front and honest ones, you as a worker deserve to be treated with respect, and you won't get it here. 

Management = Poorly communicating to their employees and seems to discourage them, rather than support them. Also, likes to point fingers at others and blame employees for situations instead of properly communicating to them. 

Discipline = Terrible and unreasonable. Will bring up problems that happened about 2-3 weeks ago instead of 24-48 hours when the situation occurred. When it comes to favourism they do not get in trouble, but others will definitely get a handful of it. 

Communication = Barely existing.. they will hold a staff meeting but is always in a rush just to say they informed us, but really they want to just leave the meeting.

Pay = Not worth the pay with the amount of work load

Staff = Some are kind, others have a salty attitude and seem like they hate their lives

Environment = Fast paced, but watch out you might get called out for every little detail in your department because that is what management likes to do 

Working here was walking on a burning charcoal, they will use you and overwork you. 

They have a poor management, specially one of the Manager who is constantly placing dirty dishes on the bar and not placing them in the back for the dishwasher to clean, but rather leaves it at the bar till someone notice it. 

They favorites people and not treat others fairly. IF your a female their tone is more nicer but if your a male their tone is different when you are being questioned or ask something.

The only good part working here was the resident who always made my day and got me laughing. The resident are great and nice but the workers will always talk behind your back other than facing the problems together. 

I advice people to not work here it is utterly waste of time and your health. Not worth it.


  

I’ve started working at Hazelton as a server in Dining room in December 2020 during the first wave of Covid 19, both dining room supervisors were super helpful and had a great attitude stepping above and beyond their duties to help their staff whenever they need it. After 6 months I’ve applied for internship in Life enrichment department for my event management diploma. After my summer internship within the recreation department I was offered a life enrichment position at Hazelton Place, I’m thankful to the management for constant support, and for always giving a chance to their employees.

Pay scale- very very low. Made under 35k Full time assistant manager. No pay increase while filling the management role. 

Employees - are not supported by the management team. When I was told to fill a position, they made me figure things out on their own and told not to go to the previous managers for help. 

Management team- very political internally. Was told not to go to previous manager for any help in the transition. (Previous manager moved to another department in company).   

Punctuality- They track if your 10 mins late arriving and will never consider the countless hours you stay late. You also never leave on time because of the workload they put on you. 

Residents - Mostly rude. But some beautiful souls in the mix



Over the 8 years of working at Hazelton, I’m grateful to be where I’m at right now.
I started of as server while still in school, after graduating I was lucky to get an opportunity for Marketing Coordinator.
This is absolutely an amazing place to work and build a future! Our GM always looked for committed employees and gave opportunities for growth and promotion.
The staff and management teams  alone are very supportive.
Residents are also very nice - they care for the staff and builds great relationships with them as most of our staff have been us for many years.

It’s always a good positive feeling coming in to work :)


The co-workers are supportive and the managers are approachable and open to questions. The menu changes every day, but there will be images on the iPad to help you imagine the items. If you are confused about any meals, you can always ask the chefs.
The majority of residents are nice and patient.  You just need to remember to provide exactly what they order and you'll be fine. They joke sometimes so it would not be a boring and slow environment to be in.
It's definitely a fast-paced setting, especially during lunchtime, but it's a good learning experience, and coworkers are always available to help.

I've been employed at Hazelton place for over 6 years , I started as a  student from Gorge Brow Collage for my placement in Gerontology programs.
I was hired as a dining Room supervisor first then after finishing my program I stared as a full employee working as a  life Enrichment Assistant .I am so grateful to work in a very positive and healthy environment .I love my job and blessed to be working with our amazing residnets and our devoted team members. Our organisation is a great uplifting work place to step towards rewarding career opportunities.



This place was my first experience working in a retirement home, despite me being nervous about the new setting and high-end customers, my colleagues and supervisors were always ready to help and resolve any problem if one arised.
The residents are very nice, respectful and super patient, which makes the work atmosphere very relaxed and joyful.
