HERMANS BUILDING CENTRES

Got hired to work in Port Colborne prior to the busy season. There is only 1 other guy who works there. In the interview, I asked if the job was seasonal, they said no, but I knew better. I was hired at $14/hr while guys at the other stores were getting $15. 
The weather last summer was poor and things were slow. I had a feeling they were going to fire me, and they did near the end of summer and they did. They didn't really give a reason; all they had to do is blame the slow year but they chose the "It's nothing personal, it's just not going to work out" route. Conveniently I was fired not long after completing a task that wouldn't have been completed had a 2nd person not been hired. That's why I dragged it out! I'm not bitter. I knew they wouldn't carry me on through the winter so I was only putting in half an effort when I was there. Plus, I was starting college a month after they canned me and I was going to quit anyway. 
Don't expect much from Hermans. For instance, the guy that runs the Port Colborne store has been with the company for 10 years and has trained 5 managers. He is very knowledgeable but as of last yr he was making a whopping $16/hr and has been at that wage for years! He is probably one of there best employees yet they obviously overlook his contributions to the company. That's sad! Upon starting, this guy had the audacity to tell me that there is room for advancement within the company LOL! 
Outside of the St Catherines store, there is a lot of downtime. On average, I bet I only worked about 2 hours of a 10 hour day. I spent much of my days fighting to stay awake, sitting outside watching traffic or playing on my phone. I'm not even sure what their expectations were of me during the downtime. The employees I met were good guys, however it seems like they are all content with just getting by and employee moral seems quite low. There's a manager that goes site to site and everybody walks on eggshells around this guy. He's quite demanding, and I get that it's his job to be, but let's be real. You aren't motivating anybody when they get nothing in return. 
I've drove by this place many times as I live in Port Colborne; to my knowledge they never hired anybody after me throughout the winter which confirms my suspicions. It is now March and I did see a 2nd employee there today. I wonder if they'll pull the same junk with him?
In conclusion, Herman's is just another family run business where only those at the upper levels will be satisfied with their job. Oh by the way, don't expect any time off during the summer if you work at a smaller store. They want to work with the minimum amount of workforce since business is intermittent. Take the job if you're desperate

If you have the willingness to follow the training and sales steps, humility to learn from your mistakes and accept constructive criticism, and the ability to push yourself to become a great sales person, this company is a wonderful one to work for.
 Upper management is great. Always supportive and willing to help. Yes, it is a sales driven company, so it can be competitive which makes it not suitable to all people. But if you're good at your job, and showing improvement, the opportunity to advance is huge. 
Training is on-going and very thorough, and it's paid off a lot with all of the knowledge that I've gained. The best part of working for this company is knowing you're not just a number. 
Everyone knows everyone in this company, and your voice is heard when changes need to be made. I know I'll be with Herman's  for a long time.

Long Hours - Expect 16 hour days (6:00am - 9:00pm) 
Lay-Offs - Expect to be laid off during off seasons
Lack of Benefits - No Vacation time, No Benefits, No Bereavement Pay
Lack of Respect: Upper management just doesn't care about anything except profit 
Unsafe - Employees are asked to work in unsafe environments.
Extreme Labour - Moving 90 lbs repeatedly either in warehouse or on rooftops 

Delivery crews are asked to work from 6am - 9pm during peak seasons and than laid off during off seasons (fall/winter). 

Roof loaders don't tie off or use harnessed while on roof tops which s UNSAFE! They are not able to tie off due to high workload and tight deadlines.

2015 Summer, I got to work on the Delivery team along with 8 other guys. The team I was placed on delegated me real work to help them with. Having to balance the work given to me could be difficult at times for at the same time, I had to stay coordinated with the other warehouse staff in order to work on our group project. However, everyone I worked with was willing to help and very friendly. The company culture is wonderful, the employees generally seem happy to be working there! I think the energy of the environment drove everyone to do their best, at least for me it did! I learned how to work and prioritze multiple tasks at a time. I also was able to improve my communication skills

I wish not to speak at this time, I was laid off for the past 3 months and need to find a job that is permanent/not seasonal where I can grow and retire.
This company chooses poor Managers to run locations. A manager should not be wearing flip flops on a construction site where hard hats, steel toed safety shoes and reflective vests are mandatory. This  has been witnessed by non Herman employees.
The employees do not wear the mandatory safety clothing and footwear, this becomes an unsafe environment. 
Safety is number one and a Manager standing on top of a truck with no safety gear whatsoever is a poor example.

Start the day off around 6 am, usually get the truck ready for the first shipment, start on our merry way around town to make delivieries. The days can be long, and physically exhausting so if you can't keep up... don't even bother applying. The guys that are happy to have a stable job with the ability to climb up through the company are the guys who get the best rewards. So many guys can't even make it a week, understand the physicality of the job and you won't be mislead. 
The hours are steady, the pay is good and I am home every night to see my kids... what more could you ask for in a job?

Typical day at work is calling stores and customers to make sure stock is proper.
I learnt the different types of roofing shingles, software, siding, and stores.
Management was great to work for, but due to lack of work, 3 employees were laid off.
My co-worker was great to work with.
The hardest part of the job was trying to find work to keep busy.

Decent place to work. However, this position is severely underpaid compared to the amount of work done. Ive had easy slack jobs that paid more. Dont bother hoping for a raise either cause it wont happen. On busy days youll be lifting upwards of 30,000 lbs. If you like being over stressed and enjoy killing your back and arms this jobs for you.

No proper training was given as there is no training parameters set in place for you to follow. Management doesn't exist and no proper guidance. The harder you work means nothing to management. It's the worst place to work.

Worked there for over 6 years.  Low wages, no recognition.  Constant micromanaging.  It is a family owned company so everyone runs the show.  Also very sexist attitudes towards women.  If you're a hard worker and good at your job they will bog you down constantly.
