The day-to-day of a law firm can be unpredictable at times, either storm or drought, i.e. terrible busy without the thought of breaks or fun chatting in the lounge between assistants. It was a learning environment with support for onsite IT friendly people.  

One of its challenges was when I was conscripted to work as a floater - that was somewhat difficult in more ways than one.

There are many great things about this place, however, the better part of the job was the commitment and drive for excellence and a climate of understanding between assistants..

Working at HMHSS expanded my legal assistant experience in a few ways: 1) I worked with a partner who was in charge of reviewing, interviewing and hiring student lawyers; 2) I worked with another partner who specialized in union work so I was able to learn the process of collective agreements, bargaining with unions etc.; 3) I was responsible for generating and sending a considerable number of monthly accounts.

The people make this firm.  The work is repetitive but you'll enjoy doing it if you work with a great lawyer.  There are a few bad ones there (cough cough A.M.) that they still promote I guess because money is key.  There is no room for growth there and the HR department isn't exactly completely capablebut they're nice so you deal with it.

The HR team is non-existent and not supportive. Work fluctuates so no day looks the same. The lawyer you work for can truly make your life a hard or a great time. HR does nothing to support you and there is no internal growth. Overall, an exhausting and thankless workplace.

I was in their accounting department and I have full support, training and experience in their systems and processes. Our team also looks out for each other, yearly reviews and raises depending upon your performance. 

If you're thinking working for a smaller firm vs. the medium to larger firm would be better in terms of pay, growth..etc. it ain't the case here.  Go and work for the larger firms.

the biggest difference between people with the same title, is who you work for. 

Generally, work is good and steady. But weekly, monthly docketing deadlines are hard and no excuses are permitted.

HR management style needs vast improvement - compassionate people needed
A lot of talented people are not recognized because they refuse to play the game

Nice place to work - good training for an entire week. Supportive HR department. You will do well if you like to work hard. Everyone is helpful and willing to assist you. HR does their best to maintain work life balance 

Good place to work. My job was different everyday, that's what i liked the most about the role. I learnt at least one new thing everyday. People are nice to work with.
