HILLFIELD STRATHALLAN COLLEGE

A typical day working at Hillfield was to arrive at the office at 6:15 a.m and report arrival to dispatch, then down time in the lunch room. At 6:35 a.m circle check was done on the bus. At 6:45 a.m it was time for departure, starting the school bus run for the morning. Arrival at the college was usually around 8:20a.m. The morning Route is now completed.


The afternoon Run started at 3:15 p.m. My responsibility was to show my appearance in the employee office and be in my bus at 3:30 p.m. Departure was at 3:45 p.m. Arrival back to the college varied between 5:45 p.m, till 6:30 p.m.


I enjoyed working at Hillfield Strathallan College. I felt that managing students could be a challenge many times as some of the students would try the limits and not consider their fellow students. Quite a few students were well behaved and respected the rules. The well behaved students were a pleasure to drive for and were also a pleasure to communicate with on a daily basis. 


The management was a difficult experience for me. I found the manager seemed very stressed and tended to talk down to the employees. I felt uneasy with her mannerism. I went to her several times for advise on managing the difficult students and her responses were very matter of fact and stern. I implemented her strategies on behaviour management to the best of my ability, but found the manager difficult to please. This has been my worst experience with management. Any other job that I have had in the past for other employees have been good and not difficult.


The work place culture was far superior to any other place that I've worked for. My fellow employees were family. We all helped each other and communicated in a friendly thoughtful manner of each other. I enjoyed spending my spare time in the employee office with my fellow bus drivers.

Fundraising and Communications department is a nightmare. Run by someone who has no right being in that role. Zero people skills, zero management skills and creates a team environment of fear and stress.  Pretends to be your best friend to your face and then throws you under the bus any chance she gets. It's so incredible unprofessional that it's almost laughable. A director shouldn't regularly come to her team saying "omg i don't know what to do about this situation". Incredibly smart, devious and manipulative.  There is never a single action that she takes that is not calculated to come out in her favor.  Pay is way lower than standard - even for the area, vacation isn't great and the benefits are okay at best. Pension plan is the only thing that employer has going for it.  Save yourself the hassle - look somewhere else. 

Not worth the toxicity. The College knows that it has a problem with workplace culture and is continually trying to change it but doesn't follow through when it requests feedback from employees - turns a blind eye to some pretty major issues, especially those within its leadership team.  Teachers and directors are paid well - many on the "sunshine list", but all other non-academic staff are grossly underpaid and the College tends to ignore them. Number of vacation weeks for non-faculty is low by industry standards. Pension matching is good, benefits are not.  There is no real level of support for employees (if you have an issue it's brushed under the rug) and hard work and is highly undervalued.  If you're looking for a pit stop or a filler job - sure... but if you're looking for where that you can grow and contribute to your career... this is not the place for you.

Overall this was the one of the worst places I have ever worked. The focus of management is not on the efficiency of performing duties but on just completing task even if the process no longer makes sense. Technology is used sparingly, archaic is a good word to describe the manner reports are completed.
 Benefits are not given to staff equitably but are based on favouritism. 
Staff morale is very low as a result of zero communication with management and staff. 
Advancement and development of admin staff is not a priority.

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
My day is Fast paced and rewarding. The best part of my day is interacting with the students across the college

Workplace culture is pretty toxic, lots of drama in the administrative area. Female directors under cut each other all the time, lots of plotting and generally just awful place to work. Head of College doesn't really want anything to do with the admin side so doesn't really care and the HR manager is awful at her job. If your not a teacher they don't care about you.

They go give you lunch though so there's that. Pay is pretty low as well. Honestly - not worth the trouble.

I need to say that for a place with over 300 employees and only the bus drivers are leaving good reviews on here - that should have been a red flag for me. There are LOTS of great people at HSC but the workplace culture, stemming from the leadership team, there stinks! It's actually kind of embarrassing for a private school to be managed/directed/lead this way. Avoid.Avoid.Avoid!

I have learned a lot at my time cooping in the clinic at Hillfield Strathallan College, helping the athletic therapist. 
The school is geared towards sports- making the clinic a fast paced environment. In the clinic I gave short massage treatments, concussion assessments, and documenting/filing treatment notes. I also helped students with their exercises.

Left Hillfield almost two years ago - best decision I've ever made. Can't speak to other departments but the  advancement and communications department is a nightmare. The Director has no regard for anyone other then herself and has a shockingly high turnover because of how the team is treated. Department mentality is very "eat or be eaten" which leads to mistrust and backstabbing.  Avoid this place/ department at all costs.

Great environment. It is a school and most admin work 12 months of the year. Many long time employees, people seem to care about one another. Expectations are high related especially related to customer service. 

Free parking, lunches, wellness account and caring environment. Pension plan is great.
