Hired as a Food and Beverage Manager and assigned to Tim Hortons. Received zero training in two weeks. The person assigned to train me left for vacation the day I showed up and no one replaced him. I was told to "just wander around" to see how things got done (not the best management training, even for someone experienced in the biz like me). On-site management is severely lacking in any real people management skills (or almost any other management skills, for that matter) and it shows: massive and constant turnover of staff, staff breaking down in tears all the time because they are overworked and stressed to the limit, staff not showing up or calling in for shifts and then being allowed to come back to work when they feel like it. Food safety and brand standards mostly ignored. Filthy restaurant (Tim Hortons). Cost of sales are inflated due to uneccessary waste. Customer service is the worst I have ever seen - ever - and I've been in the business a very long time. Everything about this place is, in a word, chaotic. Unorganized. There are some good people working here, but the lack of training and - at best - mediocre management means it will be extremely difficult to correct all the bad behaviours. I was brought in to help turn things around, but that's hard to do when nobody gives you any tools to work with. And that's a shame because I was looking to embark on a new career path and I feel I had a lot to offer this company. I'm sure there have been others, too. But we've all been chased away. I can't imagine how they can continue like this much longer. The vague and mostly empty promises upper management makes about a supposedly soon-to-be "reinvention" of the business are going to be very difficult to implement.

I was very excited to be working at the airport. 
But my first day I went home crying. The managers were incredibly rude, they did not have any kind of good feelings about anyone, everyone was considered a threat. I was told I was going to be selling sandwiches and drinks for a fancy restaurant ( outside of it ) and they put me in this corner, selling 23$ sandwiches, 2 week old moldy cheese platters, and I got hospitalized for the amount of dust I was inhaling. Yes, I was dusting constantly during the day ( with paper towels, no duster was given), but the air was so bad that there was no catching up with it. I started having blood coming out of my ears, couldn't breathe and I told the management, nobody really bothered doing anything or looking into it. I worked there four months, made maybe 8$ a day at my booth and had no chair for my 8 hours ( sometimes 9 or 10, depending on when they decided to check me out to go home, I've been forgotten about several times ). I had customers complain to management to at least get me a chair but there was no chance of it. I was supposed to start with minimum wage but they messed up and somehow started me off at 8$ ( like the waitresses inside that made 200$ in tips everyday) and it took a few weeks for them to fix that. I also have been harassed and been called several things from customers for selling very old, WAY overpriced 3 slices of cheese and I really hated it. I would love to work at the airport again, but I will stay away from HMS. Please submit with caution, it truly was a horrible job with horrible management. Take advantage of being unionized.. I didn't.
This was a few years ago, maybe theres a chance things have changed, I very much hope so!

I worked with HMS Host at Vancouver Airport with one of their businesses for a year and a half. Lack of stable hours, lack of respect and gross violations of industry standards including not properly paying me for my work. My manager took off (illegal & unlawfully) 1 hour for the time that I worked because apparently I was suppose to have completed my task by the time on my schedule. Because it took me an hour longer I was told that, "it was not busy and you are only contracted for X amount of hours so we will not be paying you for that hour." Apparently I volunteered my time. I refused to do unsafe work one time, for which I was deliberately cut on hours for, because I had reason to believe that the work conditions needed to be made safer before I would continue my task. I told them that it was their responsibility to fix it & once fixed I could do my task. Until then sorry my safety first. I was told that I was on "thin ice"for raising safety concerns & for apparently working longer then my schedule. I was told that I am scheduled for X but I can't leave until my job is done so finish the task then you can go. But you work on your own time not ours. Wow! Illegal. A year and a half of abuse, degrading, theft of my time for which I was not paid and threats from my manager to cut my hours for which did occur as a form of threats & intimidation. Disgusting that this behavior occurs with in Canada by large corporations.

Working at HMS Host for about a year, all employees I worked with when starting have either quit or have left during one of their shifts. While working I am consistently reminded of the errors made by the employee responsible for the shift before mine and blamed for many of her mistakes. Managers, some are great, fun and are understanding while others refuse to respect some of their employees. Lack of staff means I had at one time needed to train approximately 4 employees at once. I have been injured at work on old equipment that was not removed when it was no longer in use, after the incident, the equipment was STILL in its place for the next 2 months. All new employees I work with, are inexperienced and have not listened during training, and require frequent assistance for simple tasks. I have worked at worse places but this is not off that list. All computers and equipment is old and is needing replacement, they will never be replaced, some applications no longer work due to the age of the equipment. Tills are excessively slow, so are the card readers, the computers for filling production sheets, is slow and the sheet no longer works, etc.

Worked for Canucks for only a MONTH. First day of my training was terrible , managers were not organized. the person they put in charge to train me was disrespectful , and very unprofessional with the managers knowing her history of her behavior they still went forward in letting her train a new employee. Managers are immature , non understanding , and just overall not suit for a manager position. They looked at the conflict in the restaurant as if it wasnt a big issue. Coworkers there were rude , and inconsiderate. No matter how poor their skills in hospitality were they did not care as long as someone was working that shift. My last day of working i exclaimed to my manager i had a flight to catch the next day , and he put up for argument that i was not able to miss my shift. one of my good coworkers came in the  conversation and said she would have no problem with covering my shift for me. i left the room , and my manager told her she could take the shift but he was still gonna make me come in. Proceeding to tell her not to tell me that he wants me to come in when she has already taken the shift.  i have worked with restaurants my whole career , and by far canucks bar and grill is the worst place i have ever been employed at.

Some of the staff were great and very friendly, easy to get along. The leadership team although friendly lacked the leadership aspects. The big boss for this location was always re-directing questions to those below him and never responding himself. Promotions were given out to those that the leadership team liked and not to those who had the experience / education / background for the position. When starting staff are thrown right into the mix of things and the rest of the team cringes in hopes that they didnt end up in the weeds. Most of the staff are high school students and were expected to stay late past midnight regularly. Pay raises were suppose to be done based on performance, but as each department had an allocated budget for raises it was based on the big boss' decision as to who should get what even though he didnt work with the staff like the rest of the leadership team... in doing this staff that should have received raises didnt get what they should have, and great staff got less then what they were working for.

Every day I would get my cash bag for my till and count it out in front of a manager and have them check off that they saw me count it and it was the correct amount. At this job I've learned there are many different kids of people and to always just keep everything to myself, besides work related issues. Management at HMS Host was a mess, half of the time they never even knew what they were doing or what the actual problems were within the restaurant and that really bugged me. My co-workers, whom I spent 40 hours or more a week with were great people, got along with everyone, nobody really caused any problems until management comes around clueless. I wouldn't necessarily say there was a hard part of this job besides having management understand you and your point of view (when needed)
The most enjoyable part was every day I worked there, I would always look forward to coming in and seeing how my day would unfold because no day was every the same (thanks to the customers) also seeing celebrities go through the airport was a big joy of some of the shifts.

I would say that if the management was not so wide spread like how's the saying TO MANY CHIEFS NOT ENOUGH WORKERS MANAGEMENT IS TO YOUNG AND DON'T COMMUNICATE WITH EACH OTHER SO THE WORKERS CAN'T GET ANY ANSWERS TO QUESTIONS strange odd place fast paced and of course there are lazy people that work the same job and because it's not really supervised they don't work much there are a select few who do there job perfectly but others don't and that brings moral down. Pay is very poor for the amount of work required. It's very busy at times so when people that don't help much ruins it for the people that do and puts the work behind eg Bathrooms and garbage.If you decide to work just go with the flow shut mouth and you ok but if you complain about others that don't do there job watch your back They will make an excuse to rid you !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I was constantly working alone at a store with two different cashes (Yogen Fruz/Cinnabon) even on the busy days where there were lines out the door. I could only use one cash for Cinnabon and the other for Yogen Fruz so if customers wanted products from both I had to do two separate orders, which of course took more time. I kept asking for help on the busiest day (only one day a week) and in three months I got no help. I constantly went in for overtime and almost every time I was called in and I was still treated poorly, like everyone else. 

The management was awful, to the point where two of the managers that were there when I was working, have now been fired. I was even chastised for switching shifts with a coworker when I had already worked 8 days in a row and was sick (with a fever and cough). I was then fired a few days later for calling in sick for the first time with no warnings or write ups. 

The only benefit from this job was the work experience for my resume and the friends I made while I was working.

I will give the positives first.  This company offers benefits, not many serving positions will see that.  You will also have job security here (because they are so short staffed) they supply you with a staff meal and snacks for a very small fee (I think it’s $2.75/shift) some of the supervisors were amazing and the only reason I lasted as long as I did.  
Negatives - really terrible culture.  Not many people seem happy with their job. Most employees and supervisors talk bad about their coworkers behind their backs.  It’s very, very slow most of the time in most of the restaurants, so even at an average of 18% tips, you aren’t making a lot of money. 
Management will change your schedule with 48 hours notice without even asking.  Management is rude, impersonal and really doesn’t care if people come or go.  
I don’t think I have ever been less satisfied with a job in my life.
