Things were great at the beginning when I was hired as the training administrator. I loved the interaction with the public. Our training coordinator was very lazy so I was thankful when she left the company eventually for another opportunity. When they finally posted for the coordinator position, I was pressured from the Station Manager to apply. So I did. I wasnt happy that it was for close to the same pay as I was getting for the admin position. Additional hours were expected as well as being on call every evening and on weekends. The Station Manager heard my apprehension but told me he would do a review in 3 months and go up to bat for me to get a raise. Nope.... didnt happen. I loved my job and the instructors I worked with but HSE, empty promises. I know I did an amazing job as the Coordinator of the training department but within a short time they decided to lay me off. The training dept went down the toilet and from what I know now, even after a move to Red Deer, that dept is still not functional. I met some amazing people while working at HSE but as a company to work for, I'd be cautious. They make promises but do not follow through and you seldom feel appreciated.

I applied for this job years ago as a full time EMR.  I quit my full time job that paid well to do something new.  HSE gave me the job but then said "oh you may eventually get full time, we don't hire you full time"  which really made me mad because I was out of a full time job and benefits.  Secondly they also hired me as a safety watch instead of an EMR, which is an aweful job.  I have a university degree and they were giving me a job that someone straight off the boat can do.  Next, they give you almost zero notice if there is a job available for you to do.  I have been called at 9pm one night asking if I could be in Hardisty, Alberta to start a job at 6am the next day.  I for some reason have stayed with HSE for over a year now.  I am trained to do almost every field job possible and they have still not offered me a full time position.  There are 18 year old kids straight out of highschool they have been offered full time positions with benefits who can only do one job.  Does it make sense to hire someone full time for one job or does it make sense to hire someone who can do every job full time?  This is where you really question the management.

Most problems with this company all stem from head office management, not so much each individual office.   Any employee is considered easily replaceable. And in result of that, nobody is kept busy working because once you’re gone they can always just replace you. pay is poor, morale is low, and communication or lack there of is poor as well. Incompetent and lazy employees are kept around just in case there is a job to fill. Pay cuts are given without being notified. Benefits are poor, that is when you actually have them. May sit around for weeks with no work and not a phone call but when that call finally comes in you’re expected to drop what your doing and go. Local station management staff were typically fair to deal with. This job relies heavily on oil and gas industry and it’s economy, so when the industry isn’t busy neither will you be. This can’t be controlled by HSE but they also make no attempt to keep their employees working through these times. Just layoffs instead. Would not recommend working here.

Worked for this company for ahwile. My experience with this comany was not a good one and here is why: First thing that was a red flag... was working alot longer days then i was told we were going to be working which is alright if we were going to be paid for it, which we were not. A few people quit for this reason and were easy replaced (seemed to be a trend, why are they ALWAYS looking for people). The vehicle we were supplied with was a nightmare, i think every light on the dash was on and  did not run well, had very little heat in the cab and none in the back (MTC) for any patients in the winter. Supplys were often expired and was a hastle to get new supplys to site. Managment that was in charge for ordering supplys has no knowledge reguarding the medical side of things, became frustrating. The owner was very rude, only looked out for the benifit of the company and never took the thought of the employees into consideration.. (the one whos making her the money...) Managment was rude to deal with 98% of the time. After leaving this company and hearing all different sorts of simular issues from others i wish i would have know this before and saved myself the years of stress.

Working in the oil and gas industry-safety, can be demanding, high energy work, lots of traveling around the country, job scope changes from site to site, depending on what I was contracted for' safety, medical.and rescue.  Some sites I was working alone setting up breathing air trailers, auditing according to clientele needs (near miss incidents, safety advisor, emergency procedures).  Most Industrial sites I was working in high risk areas, meaning, using SCOTT packs, Dragers, setting up rescue equipment according to work being done, on site.  The hardest part of the job is having to deal with accidents when the accident/ near miss, could have been prevented;  ex; rushing to get the job done, complacency, not knowing the equipment, the worker is using, not enough sleep, personal issues, and many more.

Management is a bunch of city slicker University grads who have zero field experience. Lots of favoritism and nepotism in this company. The better you kiss management and dispatches back sides, the better gigs you'll get. Its all about the big kiss up with this company. They don't care how well you do your job, its all dependant on the size of your brown nose.
Training is grossly insufficient at HSE, especially for those new to the patch. This is because the trainers have never been to the field and have no idea what they are talking about. Can't learn field work in university. They will just throw newbies to the wolves, to the detriment of the oilfield crews they are backing up. 
There are some crazy managers at HSE. Very volatile and paranoud men who are convinced certain people are out to get them. Making threats against employees in the presence of other employees. Real loose cannons, they are.
I really liked most of the staff I worked with and met at HSE. The managers are the ones dragging this company down. 

In the training dept. we would see a variety of clients come through our doors all needing Safety Training. We provided Standard First Aid, H2S, OSSA courses and some courses specific to clients needs.

I would typically provide a client with a quote for training with their specific requirements. Sometimes it would mean finding a supplier to provide 3rd party training. Then I would book the course for the client taking into consideration the regularly scheduled classes. It would not be unusual for our instructors to travel to client locations to provide training.

As well I managed the ordering of course supplies, I assigned purchase orders and reconciled the Accounts Payable weekly.

The instructors and office co-worker that I worked with were a great team. It is easy to work with a group like this when you can get your work done throughout the day but still take the time to have a laugh here and there. It makes for a great work environment.

I am responsible for the Health and Safety aspect for our company in the northern Alberta oilsands. I chair daily toolbox talks and safety inspections on site. If any abnormalities are found, they are corrected on the spot through learning curbs. Our management are  great and easy to work with. They share their skills as a part of our team. They are very supportive. My co-workers are very professional and we help and support one another. We all meet with clients on a regular basis to ensure our contract obligations are met. The hardest part of the job is the language barrier of some of our workers, as english is not their first language. The most enjoyable part of the day is meeting with our workers at the work area. Giving them positive reassurance on the job or extra training if needed.

I am usually up around 05:30 and in my office by 06:30, I go through my e-mails and then I checkt o see where my trucks are at in the field. I will then travel to that area and start by watching them to see what they are doing and then I will complete a job observation form on them. If there are deficiencies then I will make them aware of them, I will also give them approvel when they do a good job.
One of the draw-backs is that my drivers are all a different nationality from me and I don't speak their language so it is difficult to fully communicate with them. The most enjoyable part of the job is the opportunity to me different people daily.
