HUB International Insurance Brokers

HUB has a great training program and are very supportive of employees starting out in insurance. 

Working at the company for over 5 years in two different branches, I observed that being short-staffed is the normal environment.

In our area, HUB pays less for salaries and commissions than competitors. So there is a cycle where there may be sufficient staff for a period of time, but many employees, especially strong performers, tend to leave to go to other companies which either pay more, or have a better schedule for work-life balance, or both. 

It always seems to return to the baseline level of being short-staffed. The expectation is that everybody stretches themselves thin to make things work. 

There are also a lot of sick calls compared to other places I've worked. People get sick and need to take time off, I have no issue with that, but when you barely have enough staff on the schedule to get by and multiple people call in sick on the same day, it makes for some hectic work days. 

I have found it to be a very stressful work environment where it is difficult to have work/life balance. 

If you work hard you can make a decent living, but be prepared to work long hours, work nights and stay late whenever is required, work weekends, and work a rotating schedule that is only released sometimes days before it comes into effect. 

Most people that go into leadership end up leaving the company within their first year, often within the first few months. Most people I know who have left the company say it is a great place to start, but not a great place for long-term career development. 

I'll always appreciate everything I learned working at HUB, and the support I received to continue my learning and development, but I feel like I stayed working there longer than I should have, due to hoping and wanting to believe that things would change for the better, which never happened during my time.

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
Constant interruptions, no time to dedicate to more complex files.

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
High turnover rate, has toxic personalities like any workplace, but tolerant and inclusive culture overall.

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
Get in early to start up computer, grab coffee and idle morning chitchat, customers may sneak in early so we start early if they do :( and then it's an ebb and flow of customers all day at the front counter which take priority over any desk work you may have to do. Work piles up if you're not careful and very organized because you're constantly trying to keep up with all the paperwork and constant phone calls and walk in customers. No time to study at work for your license or do required continuing education. Video meetings are often half listened to because you're still up with customers and you watch the recording later if tiy can. Lunches rotate week to week, be prompt so others don't miss their lunch appointments. Almost always have the big case customers walk in the door 5-10 minutes before closing while you're trying to count tills and shut down systems. Computer locked and out the door at 5:30 on the button.

Hub was a great place to learn  Insurance , the clients were excellent with a mix, 

 was succumbed to work, too much work with no time to even talk to any of the colleagues around, computer breakdown and errors in programmes was a norm there, no input or regular feed back asked from the frontline employee  

The workplace culture was not good, no equality among the managers, you have to be a managers fav to grow or even promoted, the president of the department was  very culture based, always talked and promoted the ladies from her caste and culture, who could speak only her language.

The hardest part of the job was always feeling sad that being in the company for several years still no opportunities were provided for growth, and staff that were hired and from the same culture went into the position of a leader, there was no one to listen, you couldn't give your input or advise on anything, you get shut down and left on your own.

The most enjoyable part of the job was helping clients and learning new things as it came around.

From the interview process to hiring Hub was very helpful and wonderful. I started to work there under the presumption of advancement for my career. When asked about the advancement I was given delay excuses, then a few months later I inquired again, and the management started to back track on their words and denying what they said. They will try to get away with dumping workloads onto you. Their internal training is horrendous, high turnover rate during the training process; also, a high turnover rate post training for their employees.  There appears to be an internal clique within the organization in Canada Hopefully if you are employed there you get into better of the two and your workload will be minimal. Their pay is very low compared to the market value of jobs. 

Throughout my year I had 3 career meetings I was always inquiring about what skills and knowledge they would like me to obtain and where I could best use my skills. There was no response to it. 

The only good part about working for them would be the compensation packages for training and school. 

Typical day at work was very busy.  Too much to do with to little staff.  Days flew by and no matter how hard you worked you still couldn't see the end of the tunnel.  

No official learning process, learning on the job.  Very little support and funds for out of office advanced learning.  Continuing Ed credits were offered through company sponsored training lunches, in house training, portal etc.

Management were supportive but were never able to successfully hire additional personnel for the department I worked in.  Salary?  Work place culture?  Bad Reviews?  Not sure why...

People were friendly, my co-workers were great.  They were the reason that I liked my job and stayed as long as I did.

I worked for Hub for 6 years and truly enjoyed my job.  I left because of too much work, not enough staff, zero work/life balance and massive stress.

I've been with Hub for about two years and its okay. The pay isn't very good (about minimum wage). The benefits are great though. I am a personal Insurance Adviser and had to take the licensing program for the level 1 insurance license and am required to earn educational hours every year. For the amount of time that is spent learning and educating for this job, I feel like they compensate very low. I am in a small office and it feels like we are looked over by upper management. The only reason I go to work everyday Is because of the friendships I have with my coworkers. I think there may be room for advancement but you have to be there for years and work in one of the head offices, otherwise you are pretty much going to stay in the same position.

Working for this company was a rollercoaster. Management turnover was high, 3 different managers with vastly different managing styles during my tenure. Daily you would have to put up with rude clients, who felt the need to come back and shove stuff in your face if they got another office to do it (when they didn’t have the proper paperwork to begin with), there were some rude co-workers who rather bully others instead of actually work, special treatment with certain employees. Not to mention ICBC and their never ending changes to their insurance systems/structure. The salary for someone experienced was laughable, and there was no room for a raise with good job performance & continuing education. Toxic work culture for LGBTQ+.

It was a good company to work. One thing I liked best with HUB International was if your are thinking of advancing your career, there were great opportunities for you to do that within the company. The focus on management and how they treat their employees is great. Employees get regular reviews throughout the year and get to set goals which I felt the management was very helpful in reaching those goals.  The only con I can think of is they pay was not at par with the rest of the world.  I felt I should have gotten more pay for the responsibilities I had during my time with HUB. Overall it was a great company to work for.

I enjoyed the people I worked with and the comradery. I had plenty of opportunity to advance my position within in the company.

lots of tasks that need to to be done as well as being focused on clients best interests

I didn't mind the culture, we were encouraged to have a work/life balance

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
This really does depend on what position you work in, front lines work in auto travel and home or condo insurance We also have Data processing dept and Finance dept human resources to name a few.

I've worked at HUB for almost 15 years and have enjoyed many opportunities and advancement.  I've worked hard and invested in my learning and skill development.  HUB gave me the opportunity to stretch into new work, make mistakes, correct them and move forward.

HUB is willing to listen if you're willing to speak up in a productive and solution oriented way. 

The people at HUB are one of my favourite parts.  Everyone is friendly, collaborative and supportive. The culture is fast-paced and high-volume so well suited if you like to be active and busy! It's a great environment for ambitious and hard-working professionals who want to make a difference.
