Habitat For Humanity

A typical day at Habitat for Humanity, consisted of being early for work as I would work 9-5 Monday to Friday. As soon as I punched into work, it varied day to day on what I did, some days I would do home furnishings, or because we resale home furnishings if full kitchens came in, I would fix cabinets, or tear out kitchens and rebuild them, then move them to the show room. If anybody purchased a home furnishing, I would help load the product for them. I learned a lot from working at Habitat for Humanity I learned to how to build toilets, cabinets, etc, and a great deal about customer service. The management of Habitat for Humanity were very organized, had exceptional knowledge with all products, and tools, hardworking, personally got to know their employees. My co-workers were good at their specific job detail, hard working, they were always smiling, and nice to customers. I also learned that working with people who care about their job and everyone working hard makes work a lot more enjoyable for everyone. The hardest part of the job was the heavy lifting of granite counter tops, they were extremely difficult to lift and move. Another hard part of the job was working during a really hot day outside moving all furnishings from 30 fourth level hotel rooms down the stairs because of a broken elevator. The most enjoyable part of the job was helping seniors move and pick products also everything I learned about and the people I met. The experience was phenomenal.

Working with Habitat for Humanity was a meaningful experience in mission, but unfortunately, the organization’s internal culture and management practices need significant improvement. There is a noticeable lack of strong leadership—from the Executive Director down through the employee ranks—which has created an environment with low morale, limited motivation, and inconsistent accountability.

Favouritism appears to influence opportunities and workload distribution, leaving dedicated team members feeling undervalued and overworked. Oversight and accountability are non-existent, with employees collecting pay while contributing little to no meaningful work. Compensation remains below industry standards, and the absence of leadership from a meek, Executive Director has led to ongoing frustration and burnout.

These challenges have resulted in high turnover and declining trust both within the organization and among the families it serves—many of whom have expressed similar concerns about professionalism and accountability.

typical day at work, loading cars for customers and putting through transactions, moving items out onto the floor. i learned that there are some good places to work where you can be both happy an helpful. The Management was really good to start off but they turned into, to be honest. Bullies. they always made threats towards your job if you didn't do what they wanted as fast as they wanted. safety became non existent an when i was injured, the boss started throwing hissy fits and even though i had been there 1st and i trained him, he didn't like me an did everything he could to make me quit, since i wouldn't he saw it fit to fire me. my coworkers were great, we acted like a family. there was only around 15? of us and we came together well. the hardest part of the job is defiantly loading customers cars, they always come in small cars for big items, but it was great. the best part of the job was the level at which you got to know your customers. some were really great and always so friendly. if i hadn't been let go based off the management not liking me. id of still been there sadly

I started volunteering at ReStore purely to give myself something to do on the weekends, not really caring about impressing anybody or the impact it will have later on in my life.

The ReStore was a small store with a lot of personality, and never had I felt stressed or immensely pressured to my responsibilities here as I have felt everywhere else. 
The staff are excellent leaders who radiate a sense of positivity and value that is often hard to find in workplaces where people can sometimes be more concerned about taking care of themselves and doing their own job. And this positivity is extremely vital for anybody in a workplace, whether they are just starting out or trying to keep up with their lives and push themselves forward in the world of working.
The staff at the ReStore are truly an exemplary example of how a workplace SHOULD be maintained; with respect to others that they would wish for themselves.

If anybody is looking to either gain experience in the retail world or even just keep themselves busy as I did, I couldn't think of a better place to do it.

Habitat for Humanity is a volunteer run store. I worked there to accumulate my volunteer hours needed to graduate grade 12. I learned a lot about giving excellent customer service, carrying out directions given to me by my superiors. Plus I learned more about home renovations and stuff since the majority of merchandise they sell is for the home. The hardest part of the job was trying o plan out where to put everything that was being donated, people are continually dropping goods off to be given a second chance for someone else. The store can get quite busy so it's important to get everything out quickly so people have a chance to see it. The most enjoyable part was seeing the appreciation in the customers eyes when they've found just what they needed to complete a project, or they've found something vintage that brings back memories. You see it all at Habitat for Humanity. Management treated everyone very fairly, they appreciate you volunteering for this worthy cause and helping less fortunate out.

The Restore provides a relaxing work environment. The staff are friendly and polite to one another and always willing to help each other out. The staff are always willing to help you learn what you don't know, safely and within the guidelines of our duties. The management welcomes you to come talk with them and ask them questions as well. They are also available, with an ear and understanding should you be struggling in anyway. 
I AM A VOLUNTEER. 
I spend time making sure the store is looking presentable and is clean and clear of danger for our customers. I stock the shelves with new items, and arrange items that have been misplaced. I talk with customers as we search for items that brought them in. I get help for our customers should they need a ladder or something taken off a top shelf. I provide prices and delivery information to those who ask about it. I also spend a lot of time learning to repair and price items in the workshop, with the work crew.

Habitat for Humanity is a wonderful non-profit organization who gives a wonderful service through staff and volunteers.   Staff, volunteers, management and the Board of Directors were all dedicated to the common goal of helping families with new homes where they could!!!!    The biggest issue that I experienced when I worked there (1yr.) was the daily lack of camaraderie within the staff and volunteers.  It was difficult coming to work each day and not being able to converse, feel welcomed to conversations, or even when I tried to initiate a conversation.  There were little groups that kept to themselves but were not so friendly to others  if you didn't belong.  Management had a presence and could let you know who they were.   Board of Directors consisted of mainly retired professionals, where some came with their own agenda.  If you were not who they expected you to be, you felt like an outsider.  

What is the best part of working at the company?
I think the Charity is an excellent learning organization. Land Development, Retail, Construction, Mortgage Finance, Investment, Community Engagement but unfortunately great for personal development but if you are joining to see output. Not the right job for folks seeking change.

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
It is an affiliate model organization. So local organizations or chapters have very little opportunity to lead change innovation. Controlled by the National office which actually doesn't build houses. 

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
Professional and functional. Not sure vision or innovators would find this a culture for them.

Organized and always challenging to find innovative solutions needed.

i was doing co-op when i began at the restore, it was to get my foot in the door , a typical day started off by just walkin in goin and helpin the first customer i seen , if they needed help carrying items i would help , if there was items in the store they couldn't find id help them with that. management was great in some aspects. my co-workers well not all of them were that good, but there were the seldom actual hard worker that came in and did what he was suppose to do. The hardest part of the job was going out in the truck to a customers house to pick up a large item and trying to transport it through there house without damaging there house it self. also the most enjoyable part of the job was going on the truck as well going and learning about different warehouses that donate to the restore daily etc etc.

I would enjoy a regular busy day of disassembling donations. The only difficulty I would have is that many senior members of staff were insulting handicapped people on a regular basis. The running of the business was also poorly done also, and as a result I quit. Apart from the attitude problems that the management displayed, I found the job to be enjoyable. With my many years experience in construction, both residential and industrial, and also minor factory work involving the making of blueprints, and the making of cupolas and 2 tiers. This, as well as the making of gazebos, give me a good understanding of how to perform the work I was assigned at the Habitat for Humanity. As I mentioned earlier, the only trouble I had with my job at Habitat for Humanity was the management's bad attitude, which is why I left.
