Day to day work within our operations is challenging but can be rewarding. A heavy workload but it makes the day go by quickly.
I learned several things. One main theme is "inconsistency" across the organization. Inconsistency in the effectiveness of senior management, workloads, staffing, employee support (training, tools), pay and working conditions.
Workplace culture has improved over the 24 years I worked. 
The most difficult challenge I faced was bullying from my direct manager. The manipulation of their manager to isolate me.  This move allowed them to malign, and misrepresent my behavoir, attitude. In the end leaving no choice but to resign and retire.  
The most enjoyable part of the job, was working with some really great employees including my direct staff, as well staff and junior level management from other departments. Dedicated, intelligent, hardworking, positive and helpful people.

Working for HRM I enjoy working with business units to improve service delivery to the African Nova Scotian Communities while understanding that building relationships is essential to how community understands HRM. I also enjoy working on projects that are internal and external to HRM. An example of a internal/external project is the Diverse Voices for Change project. 

 Diverse Voices for change is a Federation of Canadian Municipalities initiative to increase the number of women from diverse communities who are actively informed by, and engaged in, local government decision-making. Through this initiative FCM has chosen the municipalities of Halifax, Montreal, Edmonton, Ottawa and Sioux supporting elected officials to engage with urban Indigenous, racialized, and under-represented immigrant women in creating a more inclusive municipal decision-making system.

I worked for "metro transit" , right out of dartmouth high school in 1996.  At the time working conditions were so so.  But at 21 years of age with a city job with job security was a great step.   The "us" and "them" being in a union enviroment was messed up sometimes.   After 5 years I resigned to try other experiences.  I returned to halifax transit in 2013 as a transit supervisor after being involved in transit in ontario.  Everything changed at halifax transit,  you deal with so much negativity but they had your back.  They treated me with respect, valued my work experience and encouraged work / life balance.   If u want life career with no lay offs, transit is the place for you.

what I have learned: is to be a life-long- learner 

your coworkers: being able to build a friendship with your coworkers is important since having a good team work will make the job more enjoyable and to see that we are able to plan, and solve problems together as a team to achieve a goal is amazing.  
 
hardest part of the job: sometimes kids can be a bit hard to deal with, different personalities,different age.

the most enjoyable part of the job: are the kids, being around them makes me happy to play with them to teach them skills is amazing to see how quickly they learn

Some departments seem to be better than others as far as a work life balance goes. Different rules for different people. Not all, but some management don’t really have time to have meetings or articulate what they actually need. There are some “lifers” that seem to get preferential treatment but don’t really know how to do their job or treat people. If one can get past the screening for an interview for a term position that’s only one part of the battle, the next part is getting the permanent position, which again you have to interview for and there are no points for you if you have been doing the job for sometime already, it’s just a free for all again in the process and you better make sure you ace that interview. Compensation is very good, wages and benefits package are fantastic.

A typical day would be checking e-mails, responding to them and preparing and attending committee meetings. Gathering information and preparing reports.

My co-workers were all team players and if they asked for help or I asked for help, everyone was more than willing to pitch in to get projects completed.

The hardest part of the day was to deal with complaints and resolving them in a timely manner.  

The most enjoyable part of the job was the people, they are the most professional, intelligent team players that I have ever worked with.

Typical day, working with management staff,  union staff members, council, contractors and the public every day, typing correspondence, computer inputting on spreadsheets, outlook e mails, answering multi phone lines, setting up files and updating, working with employee payroll, tracking invoices with outside contractors, photo copying,  scanning, shredding, answering electronic e mails, ordering office supplies for 3 busy departments when needed, researching on outstanding work to be done with HRM.

Workplace hectic, multi tasking, fellow employees were just as busy, we all helped out when required, enjoying working with co workers.

What is the best part of working at the company?
Their retirement plan and contributions were very good. 

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
Extremely toxic workplace. No one taking actual responsibility or accountability of their actions. This goes all the way to the top 

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
Culture is a cover my behind attitude. Everyone out to protect themselves. Little regard for getting the actual job done with professionalism. 

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
Stressful and unrewarding. Constant fighting the internal politics.

Your Co-workers are pleasant. Everyone is watching out for each other. 

The majority of the population is pleasant and respectful. 

Unfortunately, the management could be improved. Regardless of their great staff, the members are not the first priority.

The police department is underfunded and this is reflected in the equipment used on a daily basis. 

Public pressure is huge and they expect you to be able to fix all problems. Once again, police only enforce criminal law and it is difficult to not be able to help those in need. 

The stress is huge in that field and your mental health can be affected. 

The current system is broken and it seems that no one is able to improve it. 

Most days I had autonomy over my own job and handling clients so it was good, but we were dreadfully under-aid, often worked with no contracts, and were classified as casual (despite many working there for years!) so we had no lateral or upward mobility with our own or other departments. We often had little support, especially when threatened or harassed by the public.
