Generally I found the staff at HHS welcoming and friendly.  It keeps the feeling of being a small community where everyone knows each other and they do make some  superficial efforts to provide employee recognition and reward.  
 But I came from another hospital and was struck at how behind the times they are- in areas like clinical knowledge, current practice, scopes of practice, policy, and organizational structure.  I’d heard the same observation from  others who had worked there. But I was honestly shocked when I started working there about how profound it is, and by the resistance of physicians, staff, and management to adapt to more modern practice.  Like many in leadership there, I had an very large portfolio (what 2-3 people should have shared) which significantly limited my ability to make any meaningful change (hence why they remain behind the times!).  

The rehab team at HHS is wonderful, everyone is very kind and accepting. The manager for the rehab services is the worst manager I have come across. I have not met one person with a good word about the manager. If you are not part of the main team and are a casual employee you will be used as needed and then tossed to the side. As a new employee when you begin the manager will be very kind and caring towards you, you will get plenty of shift, a lot of smiles and promises. Once you have been employed for some time you will start to notice that you are getting less and less shifts, you will feel as if you are in the "bad books", there will be new hires who will be priorities to take shifts over you. The manager has a history of using favortism. Job positions have been given to people the manager is more friendly towards rather than who is more qualified. The Manager is not approachable or sympothetic.

I can't recommend this employer.  I'd worked there for over 3 years at the food services.  The people in the kitchen are your usual tom dick and harry... lots of gossip. But that was the good part, everyone's nice.  The management... one had a high school diploma... very cold and uncaring. My immediate had favourites.  Quit talking to me and bullied me for a few months before I was gone;  very unprofessional and honestly can't say why they are in management.  They've no friends/people skills.  Lots of back stabbing.  Best friend with HR.  You have no one to complain to... awful atmosphere and you feel like you have done something wrong all the time.  Bully by exclusion, gossip, false accusations and major repercussions for minor mistakes.  3rd manager does nothing.  Plays on her cell phone.... what a circus! So glad to be out!!  If you have skills/talent- they'll be threatened by you... idiotic!!

What is the best part of working at the company?
My patients, a few co workers,  that's about it. 

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
Terrible , absolutely horrible managers in dialysis. Cankniving, power hungry, phony liars! Both of them!! They have NO clue how to lead and boost morale. Do NOT work in dialysis!!! Hospital or satellite!

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
Awful (dialysis) lazy, opportunistic Charge nurses! , short staffed, not enough shifts, RN master schedule is pathetic!

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
Short staffed. Back stabbing, terrible staffing, no support from charge Nurse OR manager. Manager NEVER LISTENS!!, HER way or the highway. Vindictive liar!

If I could give a negative number I definitely would. My department management was horrible. I have a chronic condition and they were not accommodating at all and made it an absolute nightmare for me. It also took almost a whole year just for me to get on a chronic program which ended up not helping me at all. 

The actual job, well management micro manages you so much that you feel like you’re in elementary school. They also have their favourites who they give better shifts too. If you’re not someone they favour you can guarantee you’ll have the horrible shifts like weekends, or nights etc. 

Recently, Union had been loosing power to protect the job securities of the employee, wages and promotions including clerical positions. This can be related to the HHS had overspent on infrastructures, and still owes paying benefits & pensions to those who had retired years ago. (same scenario to GM happened).  As previous reviewer stated, HR is not helpful to intervene the work related issues and Unions tend to passing a buck. Favor-ism plays big on promotion than seniority and qualifications. Many of coworkers are all searching avenues to get out.  Low pay as compared to other hospitals, why employee must spend for the parking $60 then?

This hospital acts more like a US corporation than a hospital. Finances and saving money are more important to senior leadership than patient care or supporting staff. I have no doubt that there is a high level of corruption in this "corporation". Staff up to the management level are treated horribly, any level above that either spend their time patting each others backs or protecting themselves and each other for the corrupt behavior. Staffing is terrible because the hospital doesn't care, hence so is patient care. Do better Halton Healthcare, you're a hospital Act like one.

Management does not value their staff. They pretend to care but concerns are just brushed under the rug. You’re treated as just another puzzle piece, and they do not work hard to ensure staff members are treated well by the public. Patients and family members treat nurses and other staff members horribly. Doctors can also be demeaning without any consequence. Poor work environment, and it’s getting worse. Also, if you’re trying to move up and advance your role/position, don’t waste your time, it’s all politics and favourites and they know who they want even before interviews.

I have worked for my employer since 1989 and that, in itself, proves how much I have enjoyed being an employee at the hospital.

I always wanted to be a nurse but never followed by dream, so to me this is the next best think to work for an employer whose main mission is to care for people.

The hospital is one of the larges employers in the Halton area and probably offers the most competitive wages.

Nursing is challenging everywhere, as we all know. However,  the provincial government has failed this community by not yet building a new hospital, and this older hospital and its staff are cracking under the burden it faces.  You will work with some great people, but in a very difficult physical environment.
