As someone who was working a min wage job then coming to join Hamilton health sciences its like I struck gold

most jobs you start new in this company you start as on call, no garenteed hours.

Most jobs will start 22~23 an hour + 14% which puts you at 26 an hour. (the 14% is if you are on call)

The jobs will have you working hard for your money, jobs like porting, cleaning, delivering mail, doing trades in the hospital, plumbing, construction etc working in the kitchen

its a decent place for someone with no education and wants to make money and chill back

Now the cons

If you have a family and need hours this place might not be for you because like I mentioned before there's no garenteed hours you might be called in for 8 hours this week then 40 the next and no shifts for a whole week

The managers arnt the and people LOVE TO GOSSIP. People love drama there everyone knows each other and talks bad about each other, 



I myself am  porter I just deliver fresh towels and linen to wards and nursing stations and take the dirty linen down the basement, I transport patients to surgery and delivery equipment to where it needs to go

Overall I would prob rate this place 7/10 good money good hard decent work but the people at certain hospitals make it awful, they talk bad and they love gossip they call in last minute and play games, you know the usual politics at a place, People love to pretend they work hard when they dont and love to complain.

Loved working in the Operating Room at McMaster. So honestly, I'd give it a 4.5. The Paediatric OR has some excellent, positive and energetic staff and the majority of the staff (Nurses, Doctors) are great team-players with a common goal to provide great patient care and have a great day doing it. If you love the OR but aren't one for daily trauma cases, this is the place for you! Unfortunately the organization itself is very impersonal and does not recognize when its staff go above and beyond (rated 3). They are not respectful of staff members schedules (especially during the pandemic). Any (and all) vacation requests may be denied and schedules are subject to change due to "needs of the department" . They try to provide notice but if you're low on seniority you may end up not having a choice (ex. being assigned call).   The Master Schedule is not followed well so it's best to just wait till 6 weeks for scheduled time to be posted before you make plans.  You may choose to take on additional projects for quality improvement or personal growth  but the organization is far enough removed that these things are not recognized.  Also, please be mindful of the potential of redeployment with inadequate training (pandemic specific). 

TLDR: MUMC OR has a positive culture and is a great place to work but the organization is impersonal and does not value its employees.

A typical day at work consists of filling patient specific medications for a 24 hour period which are broken down to be filled in various areas(rotations) of the pharmacy. Med carts, automated pre packing of unit dose, narcotics, IV admixtures, dispensing of initial orders and filling the unit dose machines on wards and inventory,

I have learned a great deal working for the hospital and continue to learn every day about roles, expectations of both staff and the public. It is quite the entity working for the public healthcare system,

Management has their hands full. Due to the pressure from the government, staffing issues, cut backs and lay offs are always imminent and the trickle down effect is felt in all departments, here is where we all suffer a little especially with staffing,

My co workers are fabulous and am quite happy to be a part of such wonderful group of people,

Hardest part would be the insufficient training provided and a lack of communication on all levels. From management down,

Enjoyable part is that I love pharmacy. It has been a very rewarding career.

Fair pay compared to other organizations (but hardly enough to live on your own in Hamilton though) and generally good ability to pick up more hours, even for casual or part time employees. Alright benefits or good lieu pay instead of benefits if you aren't regular PT or FT. 
Good job security since many positions within HHS are unionized. However there is little or no room for advancement within the organization depending on your role. 
Good pension available for all staff. 
Depending on your unit, being a rehabilitation therapist often comes with some abuse from patients which is accepted as part of the job, especially in ABI. 
Since the pandemic staff moral has decreased significantly, but overall it is still an alright place to work regardless. 

A typical day at work is when I arrive I review my calendar to see if any new requests have come in and then I decide how to prioritize my day.  Specific days require specific work completion by myself and from time to time I need to change it up if there are any urgent requests.

I continuously learn and I am eager to learn something different every day.  Even if it is something small, it may prove to be something big!

Our management team is great team to work with they are always available for guidance and mentorship whenever needed.

The workplace environment that I am currently employed is a wonderful team of qualified people and clinics/departments.  

I feel that the hardest part of the job is that sometimes there is not enough time in the day to complete the tasks at hand.  I find it more disappointment than the hardest part of the job.  When I arrive at work, I try to have a strategy of goals that I want to achieve in that given day and sometimes it does not always go as planned, but I grab the bull by the horns and give my 125% to get the work completed.

The most enjoyable part of my job is providing my services to our  team and making their jobs easier.

A typical work week as a registered practical nurse as part of the Nursing Resource Team involves planning for the complete unexpected. Floating between two hospitals and all wards ranging in acuity from emergency departments, trauma units to rehab or ALC, involve applying all required skills. HHS really utilizes their RPN's within the hospital setting; working along side of RN's and all  interdisciplinary team members. A float nurse must be flexible, competent and accepting to change. Each shift is spent on a different ward; consistency lies within my own personal routine. My manager is very approachable, flexible and assertive. My co-workers are all very easy going, skilled, very educated, and friendly nurses. The highlight of my job is going to work each day with a new team, and getting to work with a variety of different nurses on each ward. The hardest part of my job is the nurse to patient ratio and being under-staffed; resulting in poor quality care. This fast paced work environment is exciting and very rewarding; floating to all areas keeps myself as a nurse sharp and always on my toes.

A typical work day is admitting patients from home and other hospitals. getting them ready for the angiogram and post care and a lot of teaching. 
Despite being in a critical care setting for many years there is always something new to learn. New developments such as TAVI's (heart valve replacement ) and Mitral clips are now regularly done.

Because of government cuts every year since 2011 the hospital management has cut jobs every year  causing more stress on staff and don't listen to the staff concerns. Staff are becoming burned out and over worked.



The most enjoyable part of my job are the nurses I work with and the people/patients I meet every day.

The hardest part is when the patients take a turn for the worse. We frequently see critical patients that come in by ambulance and need an urgent angiogram /angioplasty.

On paper the job looks great.
Fairly Easy Commute and parking in a off-hospital-site office.
Interview was very good and benefits package is impressive. Just being part of the HOOPS pension alone is a huge bonus.
Unfortunately the reality of the job is far different from the job posting. People are over stressed and a few are left picking up the slack for everyone else. The IT staff runs 24/7 and 365 days a year. If you land help desk then you are on-call 1/3 of the year. And I mean 24/7 for 2 weeks on, 4 weeks off rotation. Response time is critical. If you land a job as Systems Specialist, May God save you. I mean Rock&HardPalace. IT manager turn over is usually  18months so good luck getting one on your side. Help desk does not work with you as 1st & 2nd line it support-style IT support. You are putting out their fires and yours.

I obtained this job through a placement from my program at Niagara College. When I started my placement in the pharmacy at McMaster I immediately fell in love with the staff in the pharmacy department. This connection I had with the staff is what caused my now manager to approach me for a Research Coordinator position that had opened up. I have learned so much from this job and continue to learn new things every day. After a period of time my manager offered me an opportunity to start working at BARL while still gaining the experience and knowledge from my job at the hospital. She constantly is finding different ways for me to gain experience in different aspects of pharmacy research to help me be prepared for other job opportunities within the same field.

Great place to work when wanting to advance career. Management is extremely close with specific people employed there so creates a conflict of interest when trying to resolve issues. 

Management will record conversations without your knowledge and state they legally can as per the Criminal Code of Canada and submit it to HR to put on your file whether it’s a positive or negative interaction. Team Lead lacked understanding and rational of the position.

Overall, Hamilton Health Sciences as a whole is a fantastic organization with room for advancement and ongoing education. The security department lacks many essentials to function properly as it is lead by very misguided management.
