A typical day would be me helping the LT staff before open. I check the drop box for returns, and check each item before it goes to the desk. I open all delivery bins and give the items to front desk to check in materials. I place all holds for our branch on our hold shelves. I make sure the computers, doors, lights are on at open. I then might do some lists, looking for books to be put on hold, check the holds shelf, look for missing items, damaged items. I also sort organize and shelf materials. It's my responsibility to get the mail. I also help patrons with questions and can check people in and out at front desk. End of day we stack bins to go out of our branch and label them for Central.

I've learned to have faith in myself and that I am a friendly person. I used to be shy, but this job just really helped me open up.

My management staff are wonderful and do everything they can to ensure both employees and patrons are happy. I couldn't ask for better people to work for and with. My co-workers are great! I love them. We are like a small family there.

The hardest part of my job is the standing and kneeling all day, wrist injuries (strain from moving heavy books). Working with the public (and children) is hard at times but also enjoyable. Attitude has a lot to do with it. I find my positive attitude brings out the positive attitude in others.

I enjoy ALL aspects of my job. It's a great working environment and I will miss it very much. Helping people and being part of a "happy" team makes it even better.

Working at the Hamilton Public Library was a great experience.
My time at the library has taught me a lot, from social skills to academics. Work environment is suitable for anyone, especially great for students. Bosses and fellow co-workers are friendly, patrons however can be good or bad as the HPL is located in hamilton downtown, there are questionable characters walking around. This does however make the experience all the more fun as you never know what to expect at a regular shift at work.

      A regular shift would compose of checking in or out. Shelving reading materials, be it digital, or books. Assisting patrons to find books, or just to guide them to what they're looking for. Special days consist of event set up, cooperating to set up events, clean up, and even occasional coffee runs for the boss!

    Overall id say my time at the HPL was amazing, and any student looking for a great place to make some money, meet some awesome people, and gain memorable experiences should definitely apply!

I accepted a far lower-paid position at the Hamilton Public Library than I initially applied for, with the understanding that I would be able to work up to a position more appropriate to my skills and education level (university graduate in English).  They barred me from applying for internal postings, and the HR manager outright said she would *never* consider me due to my autism, in direct violation of their own policies!  

Plus sides were the people I actually worked with were really nice, and the patrons were a lot more intelligent and friendly than the average retail customer.  Still, i felt like I was being used and my potential was wasted there.  Never should have given them 3 years of my life.

The staff was very nice and supportive, the full-time hours and breaks were reasonable, the job was enjoyable and meaningful, expectations were clear, and the workplace culture was great, so the experience was positive overall. The only negative bit: I was told not to leave 5 minutes early to catch a bus that comes every half hour, even if I came to work 25 minutes early and started 5 minutes early.

Transparent hiring process. Excellent training and onboarding. Reasonable hours and no work to take home after your shift. 
Most of the staff and managers are great. The work-life balance is excellent and the union is very approachable. The only downside is that most of the work available is part-time. 
Would strongly recommend the job it if you like helping people!

There is always something new happening at HPL. I really enjoyed working there. It's impossible to be bored with so many interesting programs and services offered and a variety of interactions with so many different people.

Being a page at the library was kind of like being a Tibetan monk. I spent all my hours shelving books and cleaning the children's area to find that the next day I had to do it all over again. There are always books to be put away, so patience was a must have for this job. I personally enjoyed working at the library because I got to listen to music all day and get paid properly.

A typical shift for me involved mostly shelving materials and performing tasks given by the librarians, supplemented by maintaining organized shelves if there was any downtime. It was good work, fairly mindless, but the environment was friendly and quiet and I enjoyed it a lot. Would go back in a heartbeat if I could get more hours.

Friendly, organized and well functioning workplace. We work well together and have good co-operation and respect from staff members.  New software programs are implemented regularly. Variety in job responsibilities, serving customers and
learning new things are an enjoyable part of the job.

Started well, but very limited room for advancement at entry level. Huge class divide by job title and oppressive hierarchy. Lack of work schedule flexibility. All manual labor, repetitive tasks. Some truly wonderful staff and patrons, but the rate of pay barely covers some of the risks.
