What is the best part of working at the company?
Some of the other workers are so nice and welcoming. 

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
The lateral violence from some other staff members, HR, management and the ED. 

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
The management team is unkind, uses intimidating tactics and micro aggression. They are very unprofessional and use little compassion. 

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
HR use to yell at people if they weren't wearing a mask so that was scary to witness. We also needed to document everything we did by the hour while working from home, and we had to take on extra tasks during covid on top of our regular duties.

The work itself is rewarding, working with the indigenous community is a nice feeling provides a great sense of purpose. I learned a lot working here mostly that no matter how above and beyond you go... it does not matter if the higher ups don't like you they never will! Workplace culture is toxic and it's almost like everyman for themselves, it does not feel like a team environment. The hardest part of the job is management, they don't check on you or guide you enough to care for you to succeed, HR Is super unapproachable and unfriendly and the Ed don't even care to get to know her staff it's sad!! 



The Hamilton Regional Indian Centre is a very tough job yet a very valuable one to have had. The amount of experience I have gained from working there has been nothing but helpful and eye-opening. I was placed here through the YMCA Summer Jobs for Youth program for six weeks. At the beginning it was quite difficult and I can not say I was trained very well at all but that ended up benefiting me in the end. I did not know that I was capable of picking up skills so quickly and I am now very good at multitasking. My favourite part of working at the Hamilton Regional Indian Centre was becoming a more open-minded and well-rounded person. Being around a different culture has made me a different person for the better.

Good place to work very fast paced and stressful you work with the homeless and help them find shelter to create a better living and teach them life skill to be able to have a better living. This place was very hard to work at the safety of the workers was high because of the amount of dirty needles we would find in a shift and there was not real a way to control them but if you caught some one using you would put then out of the facility for a few hours to sober up before they were able to come back in.

It was so much fun working with today’s indigenous youth and helping guide them through the help of cultural activities, teachings, story telling. We would take the youth out into the community to the park, the local school gym, to the local recreational center for swimming and they really enjoyed getting out and doing things!

The Hamilton-Regional Indian Centre services the urban Native population in the Hamilton, Ontario area.  It offers programs in Adult Basic Literacy & Skills, Drug & Alcohol worker, Moms & Tots to mention a few.

Management was disorganized and unempathetic. No accountability in the workplace. Lots of gossip and immaturity. You won’t have time to do anything within your role because they’ll assign you a million other duties 

They don't help you succeed they are bias and pick and choose who they help.  They don't have enough staff the have 1 man doing a 2 person job. The managers aren't professional and only like to hire family not experience. 

the centre met the basic requirements of a mental health service but being culturally delivered was very minimal, lateral violence was a big issue and not enough training for senior employees

I have learned a lot over the years of working at HRIC.  I have went on many different trainings and learned about the difficulties Aboriginal peoples face.  It has been a great experience!
