Overview:

I joined Hanson with high expectations, given their advertised role and contract terms. Regrettably, my experience turned out to be disappointing and misleading. Here’s a detailed account of my time in this position:

Salary and Compensation:

The most glaring issue was the salary. Despite the contract stating a certain pay rate, my actual earnings fell short by a significant margin. When I raised concerns, management’s responses were evasive, and discrepancies continued to persist. This lack of transparency and fairness was frustrating and disheartening.

Workload and Expectations:

The workload was consistently heavier than what was initially outlined. The job description promised a manageable set of tasks, but in reality, the expectations were far beyond what was agreed upon. I found myself regularly working additional hours without compensation or recognition. The company often demanded more than was reasonable for the given salary, which created a stressful and unsustainable work environment.

Management and Communication:

Communication with management was challenging. Requests for clarification about job duties or compensation adjustments were met with vague or non-committal responses. This lack of clear communication contributed to a growing sense of dissatisfaction and confusion regarding my role.

Work Environment:

The work environment was generally negative due to the ongoing issues with pay and workload. The stress of not being compensated fairly for the extra work contributed to a toxic atmosphere. Additionally, the lack of support from management in addressing these issues only exacerbated the situation.

Opportunities for Growth:

There were minimal opportunities for professional development or career advancement. Given the strained work conditions, the lack of investment in employee growth was not surprising. The focus seemed more on extracting as much work as possible rather than fostering a supportive and growth-oriented environment.

Overall Experience:

My time at Hanson was marked by a mismatch between what was promised and what was delivered. The discrepancies in pay, unrealistic workload expectations, and poor management communication make it a challenging place to work. I would advise potential candidates to approach with caution and thoroughly review all terms and conditions before committing.

Advice to Management:

Honest Advertising: Ensure that job advertisements and contracts accurately reflect the role and compensation to avoid misleading potential employees.
Fair Compensation: Align compensation with the workload and responsibilities to maintain a motivated and satisfied workforce.
Clear Communication: Improve communication with employees to address concerns promptly and transparently.
In summary, while Hanson may have potential, my experience was overshadowed by significant issues with compensation and workload. This role might not be ideal for those seeking a fair and supportive work environment.

I recently had the unfortunate experience of being a part of the work culture at Hanson College, and I must say that my time there was nothing short of disheartening. The work culture at this so called “College” left much to be desired and was a significant deterrent to any meaningful professional growth. To me, it’s a ruin in my career! 

Firstly, communication within the college was abysmal. There was a pervasive lack of transparency from the higher-ups, making it difficult to understand the direction the institution was heading. Important information was often withheld or communicated poorly, leaving employees in a perpetual state of confusion. This lack of clear communication not only hindered productivity but also fostered an environment of distrust among colleagues.

The Chinese style of  autocratic leadership at Hanson displayed a shocking disregard for employee well-being. Workload expectations were unrealistically high, with little consideration for work-life balance. Instructors were often requested to “revamp” every course outline they taught in the previous semester within a few days before the start of every semester. The constant pressure to meet stringent deadlines (say within 48 hours) in marking examination scripts and arbitrary targets in passing students created a stressful atmosphere that took a toll on both physical and mental health. Additionally, there was a noticeable lack of support from the management, making it challenging for employees to navigate their roles successfully. This College don’t provide ANY POWERPOINT SLIDES, TEXTBOOKS, HANDOUTS and MATERIALS to new instructors. What you have is only a course outline in your hands and its quite common to see new comers post a thread in the staff’s bulletin board begging for help openly.  

Furthermore, the work culture at Hanson appeared to be driven by favouritism rather than meritocracy. Opportunities for advancement were seemingly reserved for a select few (those the top management prefer  and those who are Mr. Yes!), leaving many qualified individuals feeling overlooked and undervalued. The organizational structure of this College not only demoralized the workforce but also stifled innovation and creativity, as employees were discouraged from expressing new ideas or challenging the status quo. 

In conclusion, my experience with the work culture at Hanson was overwhelmingly negative. The combination of poor communication, disregard for employee well-being, favoritism, and frequent changes in work style created an environment that was toxic and unsupportive. I would strongly advise anyone considering employment at this institution to carefully reconsider, as the work culture is a significant detriment to professional satisfaction and growth.


After working at Hanson College for a year and a half, I regret to say that my overall experience has been far from satisfactory. Despite the presence of some exceptional colleagues, the numerous issues I encountered with job security and salary growth overshadowed any positive aspects of my time there.

One of the most disheartening aspects of working at Hanson College was the lack of job security. The CEO's whimsical decision-making process meant that no employee was safe from the threat of sudden termination. It was disconcerting to know that every Monday could bring the possibility of losing my job based solely on the CEO's emotional state. This constant uncertainty created a highly stressful work environment and hindered any long-term career planning.

Furthermore, the salary structure at Hanson College was a source of great disappointment. Even after dedicating significant time and effort to my role, there was minimal opportunity for salary growth. The rare instances where raises were given failed to provide any substantial increase, leaving employees feeling undervalued and demotivated. The lack of financial incentives made it difficult to justify staying at the company for an extended period, particularly considering the demanding nature of the work.

Despite these significant drawbacks, I must acknowledge the exceptional individuals I had the pleasure of working with at Hanson College. The colleagues I collaborated with were talented, supportive, and genuinely dedicated to their roles. Their professionalism and expertise created a positive working environment within an otherwise tumultuous organization.

However, I believe that the overall work experience at Hanson College is greatly overshadowed by the lack of job security and limited salary growth opportunities. The constant threat of termination and the absence of meaningful salary increments make it challenging to sustain a long-term career at this institution.

In conclusion, my time at Hanson College left me with mixed feelings. While the people I worked with were outstanding, the lack of job security and meager salary growth overshadowed any positive aspects. I would caution individuals seeking employment at Hanson College to carefully consider the potential ramifications of unstable job conditions and limited financial incentives before committing to a long-term role within the organization.

Hanson has lost a good 10-20 members of staff (not faculty) over the last year and lost a lot of knowledge and passion, and it can take months to replace them, sometimes they aren’t replaced. 

Every day you’re reminded this is a business first and that the international students are seen as cash-cows, and then a college environment second. Students can’t fail even when many should be. Students also aren’t getting the required support because greatstaff are stretched and are doing their best to do 2-3 roles while getting paid poorly, and the leadership only care about the $ and dividends.

The leadership are out of touch - especially the CEL, making decisions that make no sense, all about ego and anger tantrums, morale is at rockbottom after the last 2 years, but it will continue to drop as long as current leaders remain. There is a little change happening now, but it doesn’t seem like it is genuine recognition of how poor morale is.

Just look at the company tagline, just a bunch of business buzzwords and cliches, and management never come across as empathetic when they are questioned. 

If you have a company where very few people see their long term future at the company, questions should be asked about what kind of culture the CEO, the board and the investors have created. (Hint: a toxic one)

A typical day involved an eye for detail. In hospitality trade we get only one chance to make the first impression, understanding this is the key to marketing success.
Customer service, ensuring impeccable service to the customers, one customer at a time.
Strategic business plan and its implementation.
Operating cost and labour scheduling and cost control.
Reservations and inventory control

Most difficult part is difficult situation such as providing a flawless service to 500 customers in a wedding function amidst a power failure, still keeping the humour and ensuring all customers leave happy at the end of the function.

Most enjoyable part of the job is employee & associate engagement and motivation. Making 150 employees feel that the success inn the business was a result of their individual and collective efforts and not a result of effective planning and training provided by the management. The fun is to plan the activities in keeping with the business plan, selling the same to the associates so discreetly that they begin to believe that " it was their idea in the first place. Its fun to watch these motivated employees in action.

employees are friendly and easy to get along with but the organization is bad with terrible pay its horrible and just another paper school to bring in people from china and india. education system in this college is a joke grade 9 or 10 max level. There is  NO chance of growth and even if you some how get promotion the work you do does not reflect the pay. turn over rate is very high being here for the time period i was i saw some of the most humblest and nicest people used and let go and fired. the position they fill are with people who have degrees and diplomas yet the pay and the work you do is a joke, people here are doing 2 different field of work while being paid like a tim hortons worker, all the hard work you put in gets thrown off the balcony if you some how do not perform miraculously in one task, me along with other who choose to leave or was let go can tell you that this paper college take advantage of individuals. i suggest any one serious about their careers please avoid this place for long term it is not a feasible place and this is an honest review. i normally do not leave a review but i feel i had to this time. Trust me you are better off working some where else.

A typical day would be with instructing and motivating students to attend classes, assisting teachers with their paper work and sometimes in delivering the presentations, helping front desk officers with phone calls and other paper work, organizing record rooms etc.

I had a chance to learn Canadian working style, improve my inter-personal skills, organizational behavior and record keeping skills.

The management was very co-operative and very motivating.

Co-workers helped me in understanding the system and were very warm towards me.

Hardest part was motivating the students who carried a adamant attitude towards things.

Record keeping, organizing things and managing events was the most interesting and creative part.

Typical day is work while you are scared if you will be the next to get fired in the following week. Staff get fire here based on CEO feeling. Your performance doesn't matter. Work place culture is toxic. Everyone ready to step on each other just to stay for one more week. The hardest part of this job is not the job itself but the management.  Only thing I learnt is never let a job take over your mental health. This job affected me alot cos of the culture and poor management.  And it's not worth the pay! I enjoyed nothing!

Hanson’s a good place to start your career or if you’re in dire need of a job. When you first start working here it feels very good and everyone seems friendly everything seems organized until you get to the end of the course where you realize it’s just a paper school. Nobody but the teachers care about the process of learning or what the students have achieved students never fail it is a paper school nonetheless. You’re required to make your own arrangements if you’re sick/absent for whatever reason. Management isn’t as great as you thought it was they don’t care about anything other than numbers. Other than the students and passionate and friendly teachers everything else is the same as every other paper school out there. 
Pays good tho

I've learned a lot so far. People at Hanson (at least those I know of) are really nice and friendly; I felt the sense of community almost as soon as I started working.
However, the problem is the executive team. There are no sense of direction, no clear answers to questions from employees, or no specific action plans. They also live in Ontario, and I feel there's no consideration of the BC team whatsoever. It's always business at the end of the day; it doesn't feel like working for a school. It's really disappointing.
