Harmony Hill Retirement Community

Being a server at harmony hill is not easy. We typically have 30-45 minutes to prepare juices, coffee, salad, dessert, condiments, plates and bowl for dinner or lunch for around 120-150 residents. I find myself always always working and not having time to take a break. They have half-day shifts which is 4 hours and full day which is 8 hours. We take an hour break when we have a full shift which is unpaid. 

Management is different levels. I cannot comment in the upper-upper management as I have never seen or spoken to them. Upper management such as the executive director is very understanding and listens well. However, I feel like management hides behind a lot of things to make excuses and blame certain things like the wage, the amount of work and being short staffed on others (such as blaming the low wage on a third party). Overall the middle management is understating, for the most part listens to us and do their best to resolve our issues BUT it's evident that at the end of the day they are looking for what benefits them, not the employees.

The co-workers are amazing. We have a FANTASTIC team and that's why I love going to my job. The people I work with are like family or close friends. The residents are for the most part are very sweet and I love them. However many of them are very very demanding and can be rude.

The hardest part of the job is we are 80% of the time short-staffed and when it's dinner rush it gets very tough especially for new people but we always work together to help out. 

The management sometimes comes to help out when we're short.

Also, the work-load is heavy and it's not for everyone. If you're not used to working in a fast paced environment or you're not used to working hard, this isn't for you.

The food or drinks aren't free, you're better off bringing your own food. But coffee in the staff room is free and on occasion they buy us pizza, muffins and doughnuts. 

What makes me unhappy about this job is the low wage for what we do. The work is heavy and labour-intensive and the pay is low and for part-timers there are no benefits. But there is always room for a full-time position.

The most enjoyable part of my job is working with my co-workers and providing an excellent service to seniors. There is always something to do as a server at Harmony Hill. 

P.S. There are cameras everywhere.

You do not want to work here. The management do not care about their employees and treat them as such. There is a super high turn over rate there. Many people have quit including managers. The dining staff are over worked and paid just over minimum wage(80 cents to be exact). The stress levels are more than a fast food place. The Management(specially the executive manager) will only treat you as a number, because that is exactly what you are to them. They don't care if you have health issues, or kids that need you home with them at a certain time. They will not work with your availability. They show no appreciation for the hard work and sacrifices that you make to be there. It is a terrible place to work at. And forget about the union representative they have there, they do not fight for the employees and you will not even be able to get a hold of them.

Management is horrible, too many clicks, if you're well liked you can guarantee more hrs than someone with seniority. 
Seniors are fantastic, especially if as a Director of Care put it " trained " , people need to realize they are people just like everyone else. 
If you work there please treat them with respect and don't fall into being popular.

Overworked, poor management! They expect a lot from their employees, as in the amount of work you do and receiving no appreciation.Staff is OK but there were a lot of clicks and gossiping. If you need anything for management don’t expect anything, they want you to do for them but won’t do for you

Nice environmental. Staff  and residents are good to work with. Not for the “lazy”. 
Must be a team player.
Management is ok but could be stronger .
Serving, setting and clearing tables, help with salad and dessert prep. Cleaning the dining room and servery. 


I learned a lot at harmony hill retirement community they taught me regulations, recipes and how to work on a line in a kitchen. they gave me my first experience in a real kitchen and knowledge on the pros and cons of living a life in the kitchen.

Usually busy, a fast paced environment. Management's alright. The residents are lovely for the most part, and co-workers will help you no matter what.

Always happy being at work. The managers are friendly. 
Learnt various ways to deal with residents.
Everybody are treated equally with no disparity to color.

Love the residents and the staff is very kind & helpful can’t wait to start full time after my placement. Looking forward to becoming an Harmony Hill Retirement Community team member 

I have learned a lot from working here and I feel like the more you do, the more you learn, everyone learns differently and I am glad to be here, no matter what.
