HarperCollins Canada and Harlequin

After 10 years as an Art Buyer / Creative Art Editor I completed my work with Harlequin as a freelance Art Director / Graphic Designer working from my home office.

Harlequin is a fast paced paced book publishing company specializing in women's fiction. Each day was exciting and creative. Working within a team with representatives from the marketing and editorial departments, I created cover concepts and oversaw various freelance illustrators, and graphic designers to produce these creative book covers. The job was detail oriented and creative, the hardest part of the job was meeting tight deadlines. The most enjoyable part of the job was the work itself and liaising with the many talented team members and freelancers.

A typical day at work would be assisting in the Accounts Payable department. I learned many things about invoices and different methods to organize multiple files. The management was very helpful when I needed it. My co-workers were all very friendly and eager to work. The hardest part of this job the back pain that came from sitting for long hours. The most enjoyable part of this job was the friendly work environment.

Overall, a genuinely good experience. The move to smaller quarters in downtown Toronto with "open concept" tables and no privacy instead of actual offices was not an office configuration that I would ever find desirable.

I’ve been part of Harlequin for over a decade, and it’s been a great place to build my career. 

Management is always supportive and approachable, and the company culture is upbeat and encouraging. 

While the work is fast-paced and always evolving, it’s balanced by a warm, collaborative culture. The most rewarding part is working with such friendly, dedicated colleagues who make every challenge worthwhile.

I loved the people and the company. A great place to work. A very good company with a really nice culture. There was a very good work life balance and that was part of the culture. I loved the people I worked with.

This was a great place to work. I made some good friendships with my co-workers. The company provided many opportunities for social outings such as themed nights out, Christmas party for adults, Children's Christmas party, etc.

HarperCollins is a relaxed, fun yet productive place to work, making the day go by quickly.  The management team are very supportive in the decision making process.  Co-workers are friendly, respectful and easy to get along with.  The most enjoyable part of my job is interacting with the customers.

Some of the people who work at Harlequin are amazing, however they don't allow any remote work and are functioning with somewhat dated ideals. The people who advance don't do so because they are qualified, they do so because they've been with the company the longest and they are next in "line" to advance.

Thjis company is a very hard working group of individuals who understand the need to provide the business the changes and opportunities required while keeping a very healthy work life balance which makes for a very well run operation.i
