A typical day of work is just like any retail store, you clock in, greet your coworkers, get assigned your tasks of the day - if any. Open up the registers and check any emails / online orders. Greet the customers as they come in and perform the cash duties as usual. 

 I believe I learned a lot of very valuable lessons and how to conduct yourself within certain situations. How you come across to other people etc. For the most part, the best thing about working here was fortunately in my case, the team I was working with. Although there were lots of mishaps having a strong reliable team is what really makes or breaks the morale and motivation to succeed. Productivity was quite satisfactory - although there would be a lot of days where it was not busy at all. 

In terms of management, there is only so much the DMs and SMs can do with the ups and downs of the Head Office management and decisions. There would be multiple times where policies or practices would flip flop every other month or so, putting a lot of stress on store level. Lots of times unfortunately the employees would have to take the blame for the decisions of the corporate office. Sometimes there would be missing sale products, many times be given too much of one product or old product. Trying to sell off certain older products (some that have been on the shelf for several months or years), is met with consequences.  Many times at store level there would be great alternatives or ideas to bring more customers in, but these ideas once again, would fall on deaf ears. 

However, there are positives. Many of the customers are quite nice and understanding. They know that the decisions made in the store are not made by the employees or the Store Manager. For the most part, the workplace culture is fun- as there would be lots of get togethers- or there would be tasks where teamwork is highly recommended. Being able to create different displays to help customers see what's new/ rotate merchandise is also a plus. Finding new ways to display certain items; especially older items. 

Hardest part of the job: would be the heavy lifting- lots of furniture boxes or having to move shelving depending on the company needs. Technical problems- sometimes the cash system would crash at the wrong time which would make things a lot more inconvenient, or the card reader would be down so lots of people having to come back with cash if they wanted to buy something. Bringing in customers- there would be days where there would be hardly anyone in the store, therefore not being able to meet budget goals; sometimes for weeks at a time and hours would likely be cut. 

You may find enjoyment here and there, that's why it's still a good job for those just starting to get experience. You learn to adapt to changes- even if the change is mismanagement. But you don't leave without having learned something. The store discount is pretty good as well- 20% off regular priced items, and upto 50% off sale items. Which is good because you basically can get "first dibs" on things when a new shipment comes in. 


Hart stores is a mess of a company that I can’t recommend. I worked at the Hart Store in Oshawa for 1.5 years and I wouldn’t recommend it to anyone who knows their worth. The quality of the products is terrible and sketchy, and you will often find people returning products for breaking, not working, or for being poor quality. Management is loosely trained, as are associates. Head office will not help you if you have an issue, and in my experience, often neither will management. Disrespectful and discouraging behaviour from associates towards each other is ignored. District manager also had “favourite” stores, favouring them over yours if you aren’t the chosen one, and once you inevitably have an issue with another store (as there is a lot of feuding between stores), DM will always choose the side of their favourite…even when they’re in the wrong. Professionalism is also non-existent at Hart, as other stores will pick fights with you via email over the smallest things, such as wanting to transfer an item from one store to another for a customer, or calling around to find a product for a customer. This completely erases any ability to work as a company, and every store is essentially told not to contact others (so if a customer asks you to to help them find a product you’re looking for at another location, you’re told to tell them “no”).

I have worked off and on in retail for nearly 8 years and Hart was by far the worst place I have ever worked. Can’t think of a single thing about it that I enjoyed 

I would never recommend this place for a job, they have lied about our hours, they changed the schedule far too often, no inventory control, management and head office is an absolute joke, can never get straight answers, sales never have the sale items, stock is often broken or second hand from an auction, store is not kept properly or maintained, no working washrooms for customers, no paid 15 minute break (which I thought were an absolute thing anywhere else in canada), no one to help manage the store for success. We all got notice we were getting 5 hours a piece for the entire week of work. Most having children themselves cannot survive on that, then being told after the fact the position was temporary (which we definitely were not told) and then told that the positions are not for people who need to rely on steady hours (people with kids). I would not recommend this place for anyone in their right mind who needs something to fall back on, they don't have it and probably never will.

Enjoyed working in both mens and ladies wear at my own store, and 
assisting customers by getting to know them and being happy to see them come back. 
 I setup sales and was given the responsibility of ordering some merchandise in the ladies department
I started working first in mens wear then went over to work in the shoe department until the store closed.
I was hoping to be able to work until I retired because I enjoyed working there very much.
Our goal was to have the stock available and that the customer was happy with it.
I was also chosen to go to another store and train 2 women by teaching them how set up the shoe department before their grand opening  I enjoyed that a lot    

Renovations to the store , were prepped and fulfilled through out each day , I learned that to achieve something means to put all of your hardest work into it , I gave it my all while working along side the staff of this franchise. The people to whom I worked with were truly inspiring individuals who kept me motivated even more so then what I had already been!! . The hardest part of the job to me really was not hard at all , because I like a challenge , don't get me wrong at first your body is not use to all of that activity, but I held my own and always do . The most enjoyable part of the job was the conversations through out the staff involved in renovating, Everyone helped each other stay in focus and create a great looking store . 

constantly feeling unfulfilled at work, no training, you just get thrown at something and expected to know how to do it and then get chewed out when something goes wrong because you weren't shown how to do it properly, store is constantly disgusting because theres not enough hours to have it be how a store should be, way too much stock in such a small area so the store just looks cluttered, keyholders are expected to have all the answers when they're barely shown how to do anything they need to know how to do. honestly embarrassed to have worked here. getting promoted isn't rewarding in any way. the good chunk of customer clientele is rude, messy and disrespectful.

 It was close to home and little traveling required for yours Truly.

The unpredictable schedule with deliveries from warehouse in Montreal.  They send too much merchandise that is not required by store.  Store warehouse and sales floor are overstocked, no place for customers to find product they want.

Not enough staff creates stress for working staff, too much thief, and no time to be pro active with stocking and dealing with customers.

Lonely...lacking team spirit and working for a purpose....lacking staff overall.

Poor management and no flexibility in schedules not a safe environment to work so many workplace hazard

The management make you work to make you exhausted and get sick. Very improper methods of handling workers and poor customer service

Really bad experience, wouldn’t recommend for a person to work there

The company is not open to change with retail technological advances.
People are great and very helpful.
Management is not open to change.
The company has down-sized considerably.
Job security is non-existent and due to this a lot of good employees have left.
Management keeps cutting salary.
When I worked there, the reception area as managed on a rotation basis by the employees.  There was no one permanent receptionist.

Great team workers and willing to train to grown with the company

There is a lot of training on the spot as it is a new and growing company on the island

Great they are always eager to learn about culture that they are not use too and willing to teach about there’s
